Latin Mottos

Anyone else love Latin Mottos? I've never had the chance to learn latin but I've alway loved how straightforward some sayings, mottos sound in it. I sort of collect them for want of a better word, there's something about the language that makes everything sound more profound in it somehow.

I think my favourite is "Mundus Vult Decipi" which roughly translates to 'The world wants to be deceived' and I know a lot of people who love "Omnia Vincit Amor" or 'Love Conquers all'.

Got any good one's you'd like to share?

I think you screwed that one up - it's "Amor Vincit Omnia".

    You had it backwards.

I love that one, it's the tagline of my blog.

EDIT: Actually both Amor Vincit Omnia and Omnia Vincit Amor appear to be acceptable.

I've never seen so much appalling dog latin in my life - for those of you bickering it should be Amor Omnia Vincit (subject and object come before the verb - did any of your rubes go to school?).

My personal favourites are Sic Transit Gloria Mundi (which I intend to have on my tombstone) and Nunc Est Bibendum.

Much as I know that you're accurate on the technical 'rules' of Latin, especially since it's vindicated by another fave of mine - Victoria Concordia Crescit - it would appear history disagrees...
Caravaggio entitled one of his paintings "Amor Vincit Omnia" back in 1601. I'll go with his version.
But all are apparently acceptable (altho I wasn't aware that there was any other version other than Amor Vincit Omnia prior to today)

If a painter said it 1000 years after anyone still spoke Latin, then it must be right.

    Romanes eunt domus

    CENTURION:
What's this, then? 'Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?
    BRIAN:
It-- it says, 'Romans, go home'.

    CENTURION:
No, it doesn't. What's Latin for 'Roman'? Come on!
    BRIAN:

    BRIAN:
    'R-- Romanus'?
    CENTURION:
    Goes like...?
    BRIAN:
    'Annus'?
    CENTURION:
    Vocative plural of 'annus' is...?
    BRIAN:
    Eh. 'Anni'?
    CENTURION:
    'Romani'. 'Eunt'? What is 'eunt'?
    BRIAN:
    'Go'. Let--
    CENTURION:
    Conjugate the verb 'to go'.
    BRIAN:
Uh. 'Ire'. Uh, 'eo'. 'Is'. 'It'. 'Imus'. 'Itis'. 'Eunt'.
    CENTURION:
    So 'eunt' is...?
    BRIAN:
Ah, huh, third person plural, uh, present indicative. Uh, 'they go'.
    CENTURION:
But 'Romans, go home' is an order, so you must use the...?
    BRIAN:
    The... imperative!
    CENTURION:
    Which is...?
    BRIAN:
Umm! Oh. Oh. Um, 'i'. 'I'!
    CENTURION:
    How many Romans?
    BRIAN:
Ah! 'I'-- Plural. Plural. 'Ite'. 'Ite'.
    CENTURION:
    'Ite'.
    BRIAN:
    Ah. Eh.
    CENTURION:
    'Domus'?
    BRIAN:
    Eh.
    CENTURION:
    Nominative?
    BRIAN:
    Oh.
    CENTURION:
'Go home'? This is motion towards. Isn't it, boy?
    BRIAN:
Ah. Ah, dative, sir! Ahh! No, not dative! Not the dative, sir! No! Ah! Oh, the... accusative! Accusative! Ah! 'Domum', sir! 'Ad domum'! Ah! Oooh! Ah!
    CENTURION:
    Except that 'domus' takes the...?
    BRIAN:
    The locative, sir!
    CENTURION:
    Which is...?!
    BRIAN:
    'Domum'.
    CENTURION:
    'Domum'.
    BRIAN:
    Aaah! Ah.
    CENTURION:
    'Um'. Understand?
    BRIAN:
    Yes, sir.
    CENTURION:
Now, write it out a hundred times.
    BRIAN:
Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir.
    CENTURION:
Hail Caesar. If it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.
    BRIAN:
Oh, thank you, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar and everything, sir! Oh. Mmm!

you did'nt seriously think i was going to type out all that, although my latin teacher would be ashamed of me for not doing so. Longmans Latin was nearly as boring as Peig. lol. my favourite latin phrase has to be " Festina lente " make haste slowly !!

Dude, I rearranged it, that's the point.
    (It now applies to girls.)
Have you gone insane? What you said means "I conquered, I came, I saw". That's nonsense.

Have a look at what has been my tagline since I subscribed, that's the order for "I saw, I conquered, I came". "Veni, vidi, vici" is "I came, I saw, I conquered".

Vici, veni, vidi - I saw, I conquered, I came.
Surely you get the joke? Come on hulla, come on, you can do it!

In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni (we go into the circle by night we are consumed by fire). Used to be a password for centurians and refers to the behaviour of moths around candles. It's also a palindrome. Brilliant.
