right guys im hittin the gym really hard core for the summer and was wondering what you think bout my plans. I plan on doin a split program doing each body part 3 days a week and therefore hittin the gym monday to saturday morning before work. I also plan on goin 2 and maybe 3 times a week in the evening to do spinning classes. do you reckon that is too much to make good gains or wht?

Yes way too much IMO, you say you want to make gains, do you mean lean muscle gains? You will be fatigued before you know it. Spinning classes are just going to burn calories you need to gain weight. A lot of people think the gains come quicker if you run hell for leather at it, fact is they won't come at all if you don't take your time, your body grows while it rests. You don't rest - it won't grow!

I would say do a 2 day split, Chest back and shoulders 1 day, legs/arms on the 2nd day.Do your ab work on both days.

    4 days a week, i.e Monday/Tuesday and Thursday/Friday.

Keep the cardio down unless your trying to loose weight.

Give your body time to recover and take plenty of protein.

ye i was thiunkin bout doin the 4 day a week but was willing to do the 6 day if it was worthwhile.

The only fat on my entire body really is a belly that i want to get rid of

Definitely too much. You can make incredible gains (up to 9lbs of lean muscle tissue) working out once a week for less than ten minutes and doing nothing but resting for 6-10 days afterwards.

    DubNside makes sense.

right so then i plan on doin a two day split workin each muscle group twice a week. Do you reckon you can make real gains like this in light of the fact that i plan on doing 2 or 3 spinning classes a week

Whats with the spinning classes if you want to add muscle?

Cycle/walk to the gym or work if you can to make up your cardio work and hit the weights for an hour x4 times a week, at least thats what im doing.

I know guys who did 5 or 6 days a week and made small gains in lean muscle, when they cut that down to 4 they gained extra pounds of lean muscle!

If you want to cut down on the old beer gut then do your spinning classes/cardio work, do around 50mins weights but keep them light and cut the resting period between sets to around 15 seconds to keep the intensity up.

i play football and building up my legs and my fitness for next season is very important to me and as i have an injury that prevents me from running but not cycling i see spinning classes as the best option.

i agree with boru here, iv just after taking almost a 8 day week of rest and although i was hesitant at first to do it, it really was worth it. And after going back to the gym yesteday and working the chest i havent felt pain like that in a good while :) . So every so often take a break for a good few days, resting and eating lots of good clean food is just as important as alot of training.
