I think this should get a whole thread on its own rather than continue this one.

    Likely starting 11

    Robinson,
G Neville, Terry, Ferdinand, A Cole
    Carragher
    Beckham
    Lampard----J Cole,
    Gerrard
    Owen

Interesting! If it happens, Carrick will be mighty pissed off he does'nt start though he may well finnish.

    Mike.

I dont think any of those midfield players have the discipline to stick to positions, maybe thats why he's dropping in Carra who can cover mid and the lb/rb positions when someone moves forward.

    Could be interesting.

thinking of throwing a few quid on this game so i will not predict anything just yet

Carragher is a brilliant defender but he is not good enough at passing the ball around to play in that position. Its a travesty that Carrick isnt playing there and to me its another case of Sven trying to include his best players and not caring whether the system works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,679 ✭✭✭Chong

I am personally dumbfounded by this, why isnt Carrick playing in the defensive midfield position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

Anyone else tempted to put some money down on England losing tonight?

I just realised, has Sven said somewhere that Carragher will plya the holding role?
Could he be considering playing Ferdinand there and dropping Carragher to defense? Or did he state that Carragher was going there?

Cmon England!!! give carragher a chance to play there, he doesnt need to pass the ball well, just let gerrard and lampard take it off him.

That team could win the world cup based on club form.

in relation to gerrard - when was the last time he had a great game for england... he always seems to under perform.. due to position/etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Well so far I think Carragher has looked alright, although at one point I though he should be rushing out closing down instead of almost sitting on the back line.

I think Beckham has looked good, and I don;t like David Beckham.

I think Gerrard has been inneffective. I think Owen looks unfit (no surprise there).
Lampard has not been involved. Neville looks hopeless.

This is a real shambles. They should be playing crouch and another up front.

If they HAVE to play a defender in a holding midfield role, it should be Ferdinand who has better distribution.

Wouldn't be surprised if Hungary took this.

    Penalty saved from Lampard.

    Dull game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

Lampard got pwned by the Hungarian goal keeper.

    Beckham MOM so far.

Gerrard has been most effective deep.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

lol at the Hungary defender belting the ball off his own crossbar :)

The only reason I can think of Sven having Carragher over Carrick is that he can form a back three and push Neville and Cole further up the pitch. It's a 3-6-1 then though, not surprising England have struggled.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Hungary have just been happy to sit across the field for the most part, the action needs to come from wide with Gerrard feeding off Owen I think.

    Mike.

Wright is quality, I like him, when was the last time somebody had the balls to come out and say that.

I actually think the problem in this game is Carragher. His range of passing is holding England back, it's actually forcing Lampard to drop deep ironically because he can only play very very short passes. He can win the ball, and win it well, but is giving it away once he is on it. Since they are playing a 4-4-2 with Gerrard pushing up alot, or at least with Gerrard too far up front, he has nobody to do his passing for him.
Carrick really has to come on, and they should go to a full 4-5-1.

I think the thinking with Carragher was to be a sissoko type player.

If you compare him to Sissoko he's a MUCH better passer.

:D Who Carra or Sissoko? ;)

    :p

goal of the season at half time.

i dunno, not a great selection - I miss Matt Le Tissier.

I think its between Pedersen, Solano and Gerrard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

    Hargreaves on for neville?

    Maybe carragher to full back?

    Yep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,617 ✭✭✭✭PHB

    Yep, Hargreaves for DMC.
It is his preferred role afaik, it's what he was introduced to me as.

I think we can take this early goal as an indication of how right we were that England need a DMC :P

    ---

Does anyone hate how goal of the season is now all about an individual strike or such. Like all of those selected were super strikes, very little teamwork involved.

Half of the goals of the season come from Arsenal imo, real talent throughout the team, not a one off strike.
The goal of the season for me was Rooneys run, with his flick to Van Nist's chest, and then Van whacking the ball into the top corner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

    Hargreaves playing midfield.

    EDIT: Good goal by Gerrard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

    Great ball by beckham.

    Gerrard unmarked.

    Hungary asleep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

    1-0 SG

By the way, before the Peno, after Owens header the ball came back and someone shot on goal, Joe Cole handled the ball, no-one mentioned that.

    2-0 Terry
