ok, so I've calculated I need to consuming no more than 2500 cals a day (thanks g'em), but how do I now work out what I'm cunsuming? The food I eat is prepared in a canteen, so I don't get the amount off the side of the packet
9am: 2 slices of toast, 2 weetabix, cranberry juice and boild egg.
1pm: bagle, meat, colesaw, cheese or meat and potatoes/rice
    7pm: fish/meat and potatoes/pasta/rice

I dont snack. And go to the gym 3 times a week doing only cardio (50mins) and a short swim (15mins)

...sorry I'm new to all this :o

Prepare your food at home and bring it with you. When you eat from a canteen you have no idea what they are giving you and its is more than likely unhealthy for you

    open a fitday.com account
Use this for a month or two until you learn enough about the foods you consume to guage your macronutrient intake yourself. You can continue to use it, personally I found it useful as a learning process and long term use the GI diet.

nay problemo. as mentioned try fitday.com or nutritiondata.com to find out what the composition of your foods is. Don't get too caught up in calories though, its easy to become a slave to numbers!! Just to make it a little more complicated (and fitday.com will help you with this) try to get your ratios of macronutrients in order- around 20% fats, from good healthy sources like nuts and flax/ linseed/ olive oils, oily fish, around 40-60% carbs (starchy carbs like porridge, wholemeal pastas, rice, breads and grains, and fibrous carbs from veg and fruit, and 20-40% protein from lean meats (white meat is best), eggs, dairy, pulses, fish.

It can all seem a little overwhelming at first, but don't worry, after a while you get to know what your regular foods consist of, and you know instinctively whats good and whats not.

Try to start snacking- your body likes to have a regular supply of food, so snacking mid-morning and afternoon on yoghurts, fruit, nuts, veg is a great thing. And eat as little processed stuff as possible... I know that's hard when you eat in a canteen, but maybe you can start bringing your own lunch in. It's really the only way to keep control of your diet. Lots of water and green tea will help keep you hydrated and clean. Enjoy!!
