Marathon training from scratch

A mate and I have just decided that we're going to try and run a marathon next year. We are bith starting from a fitness level of pretty much zero. I've only started playing footy an hour a week in the last two months. Thats been the extent of my exercise in the last couple of years.

Just looking for advice on how far I should start running(e.g. how long, how many times a week) to get the fitness going. We weren't really planning to run it till next year some time so don't need a very specific schedule yet. I wouldn't mind burning a bit of belly off in the process aswell. I'm about 5'10 and 12 1/2 stone approx, no health concerns. Haven't been fit since senior cup rugby 5 years ago.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi there,

My own experience for my first marathon was about six months training. My advise would be to start off slow and don't worry about distance yet. Maybe something like 15-20 mins to start off with, and build it up from there. Do that three times a week and you will be surprised at how quickly you build up your distance, just by adding a few mins each week. Also get your self a pair of good trainiers. Just take it slow at the start, your timing and distance will build up from there. Best of luck with it.

I'm in training at the moment for a Marathon in September. I have some training material given out during some group meetings at the start of training. Do you have any idea what sort of time you would be aiming for since the routines vary based on what your goal is.

I wont be taking it too seriously but at the same time I would like to complete it in a non-embarrassing time. Basically I'd like to finish somewhere in the middle, between the serious athletes and the absolute jokers.

Also I have a gym membership that I've used once since September so might try and use it to get my moneys worth. Any idea what sort of pace I should be running at if i'm running on a treadmill.

I wouldn't say that anyone who can finish a marathon is a joker.....

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you .I would look at following this programme
    http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

The general advice is to run your shorter sessions at or near marathon pace. The long run should be "45 to 90 seconds per mile slower than their marathon pac" (Hal Higdon).

Hope this helps, and good luck!
