Cant play DVDs after formatting

    Im after formatting a friends laptop and after formatting I cant play dvds. It says "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not instialled on your computer." Does anyone know where I can find a decoder for this laptop?

    As far as I know there's no free ones. Most computers come preinstalled with one. If your friend has the discs that came with his computer, it might be on one of them

    when formatting you wiped the drive, taking with it any sofware that plays DVD's! Try download VLC player. As far as i know, it can play DVD's.

    VLC should work, give it a try and let us know. You should have gotten a re-installation CD with some dvd software on it, but maybe not.

    Yeah it worked but I cant open files on a DVD. I have some software on a dvd which I want to install but it wont read the cd. I have Sonic MyDVD 5.3 LE and RecordNow 7.3 LE Software for my Dell computer install it into the laptop and still couldnt open dvds. Must be no decoders on that cd.
