Xbox shagged......

After 6 glorious months of gathering dust beside my tv my Xbox 360 has finally given up the ghost.

For the past 6 months I was feeling left out because I had a working one and couldn't share in the misery of other owners on their 3 replacements, now I feel united with my fellow 360 owners.

I've read all about the red lights on the power button, but I haven't seen anything like this happen to an Xbox before. The machine locks up completely with any game and displays little dots on the screen.

What can I expect from MS when I call them ? Will they expect me to give them the entire machine including the HDD ? and will I get a new one back ?

I'm in the same boat, roughly. Mostly it just freezes with whatever was on the screen, or sometimes freezes on a black screen.

I just called MS and they said "they're too busy" right now and that I should either call back later or wait for them to call me. So far, no call (and I gave them my mobile number). Argh! :(
They'll have to collect the unit, then it goes to the UK and they replace/fix it. Hopefully it'll be quick, but I'm not hopeful it'll be resolved before the weekend.

I had to return my poor old 360 on Friday. Are you sure you rang the right people Koneko? Did you get the number off the Irish section of the official xbox site?

Basically, I have the exact same prob as you Koneko. I rang em up, explained the prob, they went through a few things with me, took my units serial num and said that my machine would indeed need to be sent in for a service.

They then emailed me some labels to stick onto a nicely packed box with my console inside and UPS collected it (for free) the following morning. They said I can expect it back in 10 working days. Hadda send the console, hdd and power supply.

I miss Ghost Recon and really wanna play the Lost Planet demo....!!!!

I was told the same thing this morning when i rang. My name and number were taken and I was told someone would call me back. No call yet

I too am waiting for a call from Microshaft. And they're already getting an earful from me in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Still waiting for the magic call. What a crock.

Also, I'm 100% positive I rang the right number, I can read you know ;):p

Yeah, the support has always been excelent for me.
I had a problem with my old xbox, a coupleof years back, and they sorted it out free of charge, with no bother.
Same with the 360, when it suffered one of those release glitches!

    Update on this....

I went out and got a Memory Card today. Just after I copied over my profile and some game saves the thing showed me those lovely red lights and now its completely dead.

I really don't understand this !!! the machine was sitting on a glass shelf with loads of room around it and the psu was on the next shelf down again with plenty of circulation. I only reall touched the Xbox when I changed games, which was very rarely as I only have 2.

How can a machine work perfectly for 6 months (release day machine) and then all of a sudden stop working ???

Mine was the same. Fine since launch, no problems at all, until the last few days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭kensutz

Anyone get their call from M$?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Ronan

Weird, the exact same thing happened to me this weekend. 6 months old and yesterday the dots on the screen started appearing, it was fine after a reboot, but happened abot 5 times. I thought maybe it was the powerbrick so I moved it right out and gave it loads of ventilation... great, until about 10 tonight when I got the dreaded red lights and now she is dead... guess I will be calling MS tomorrow too :(

wow. so many of you guys with problems.. kinda putting me off getting one now!

well once MS replace it I will be happy.

the 360's that are faulty are 6 months old, aka the launch batch.

One's in shops now are a revised model with minor changes, and come with a different manufacturer on the dvd drives, there also less noisy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭Sar!

I wonder does that mean that MS replace the faulty units with the new ones or do they just do a patch job on it? There is no point in that if in another 6 months we are all having the same conversation and having to replace the replacement??!! I think its a pretty bad from a consumer pov selling systems that are basically timed to pack in on the 6 month mark exactly...more or less to the day in fact!!! 11/11/05 on the back of ours!:(

Strange how so many people are having very similar probs at pretty much the same time. Sure if they were all launch machines they might be expected to give up the ghost around the same time, but surely some people play their 360s for hours every day, while some only manage a few hours a week.

There is a lot of talk (interweb talk, y'know, so of course you take it with a pinch of salt) that one of the updates caused major probs for lots of systems. A virus perhaps...?

    :D

This concerns me I got mine about 2 weeks after release, It's never had a problem and it gets a fairly resonable bit of use, I am very happy with it but that may change when if I see red lights

I think you might be better off getting the red lights now rather than in 6 months time when the warrenty is up. At least if it happens now you'll be able to get rid of your "release day" machine and get an updated one.

Thats what I'm hoping for myself.

Still no call from Microsoft. I rang them when I got home yesterday and I was on hold for 30 minutes (yes... 30 minutes....) before I gave up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Ronan

I called them at 9:30 this morning, was on hold for about 5 mins then I talked to a girl and as soon as I mentioned the screen freezes and white lines and gave here my details she said that she would send me UPS details and I was to send the console and power supply (I'm not sending the Hard disk) in a brown box and I will have it back in 10 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Same deal for me, finaaaally got through to someone and he was very nice. Sending info pack by e-mail, I'll pack it up, ring the courier and hopefully they'll replace it quickly (he said it'll probably be monday/tuesday before I get it).

well ye if it's gonna go boobies up I'd rather it did it under warranty but I think I'd still prefer it to keep running for a couple of years first.

any consoles I have had before I have always gotten 2-3 years before they started acting up. Maybe I've been lucky.

I just thought, which consoles are having the issues are they Premium or core or a mix of both, I know the "only difference" is what's bundled with them and the drive door colour but I'm curious?

Strange that all the release day 360's are going at the same time, happened to my brother the other day, I got mine on the same day in the same store so mine might be going soon also....

meh, my 360 has been going strong since launch, never once crashed or glitched (except in glitchy oblivion) and is on pretty much 4+ hours of every day (granted it's just sitting there on the dashboard, but still)

Well, I had the exact same problem with the PS2 I got at launch.
It froze up after about two months, and I had to get it replaced.
Now if you're bitching about MS, try the sony service center.
Over a month and a ****ing hakf before I got a replacement, and they were even trying to charge me for shipping at first!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Well my 360 is on it's way back since yesterday afternoon. Stuck somewhere though because apparantly UPS want to run it through an X-ray? Hopefully they'll sort that out tomorrow.

I got my reference number from MS this evening. I spoke to a very pleasent German girl.

BTW, my missus works for UPS in Dublin, they look after the collection of the machines here. She told me that they get sent to Germany for testing and repair, the name of the company is Teleplan.

I was very pleased with their service, I like to see a company that sticks by its products.

I think you may have misinterpreted my post, I'm not bitching, I'm actually really really happy with my 360, it's the game retailers are my pet hate at the moment but I think I've posted enough on that subject. ;)

Yeah I waved goodbye to mine yesterday too, hopefully it won't be too long until we get them back working.

Got delivered (in the UK) today. Hopefully it won't take them long to send out a replacement. I very much doubt it'll happen, but fingers and toes crossed they send it out today then it might arrive tomorrow ;)

Whole thing has been fairly fast, other than UPS keeping the package an extra day to X-ray it.

I bought Jewel Quest and haven't even gotten to play it once because it crashed on the menus (on Jewel Quest ffs, hardly the most graphically intensive game hehe). The guy I spoke to MS said it sounds like the graphics have failed (ie broken). I don't think it's anything to do with overheating (on mine anyway), as it crashed on the JQ menu after it was off a whole day.

Mine was the same, graphics card went. I got dots on the screen and then 2 days later red lights. I've seen dots on the screens of pc's with broken graphics cards before.

Exact same here, so here is hoping for a quick turnabout, but it will be a console free weekend though...

mine seems to refuse to shut down fully. The lights on the console go off but the power supply light stays on and the fan in the console keeps going.

    anyone else had this?

Sounds like that PSU Advanced Relay mapping issue that people were having a couple of months ago.

Got a tracking number, seems a replacement is on it's way back (well, nearly).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Ronan

I got my tracking number this morning too, seem it is on its way home. Of course the tracking number isn't working on the UPS website, but I would imagine Wednesday will be the day it comes back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

I was hoping mine would be delivered today, but the status hasn't changed since friday. It might change to "out for delivery" later, otherwise it'll be tomorrow. Quick turnaround anyway so I'm happy enough, just hope this one isn't broken

    ^_^

Have my 360 back. After UPS decided to deliver to a random neighbour though

The UPS tracking didn't update at all. It went from "Origin Scan" (in the UK) to "Delivered" (to random person down the road). My phone number is on the package, but apparantly UPS delivery couriers aren't given phones...? Stupid.

Is it a replacement machine or your old one ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Ronan

Great, I live in apartments, so if my Xbox goes AWOL somebody in UPS gets a padling! Anyway, koneko how is she working now?

    K-TRIC wrote:

Doesn't seem like my old one, but I haven't checked the serial yet. Was wrapped up in plastic and I see no damage or dirt, looks new and has the little plastic thing over the remote receiver.

I dashed home to collect it from my neighbours (who I hadn't met before, but were nice because they didn't steal my package :) ). Booted up fine, but I didn't get to check it beyond that as I had to go back into work. Will be "testing" it later though ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 92 ✭✭jellycopter

I sent my 360 off on the 12th and got it back on the 19th, so pretty happy with that turnaround.

Also, it's not the same machine. Wasn't gonna rely on the serial number so was devious/sad enough to make a few tiny pin pricks on the casing and they're not on the machine I got back. It's also a lot quieter than my previous machine, so everything is comin' up Millhouse! :)

Nice to know if they are replacing 360's it's with the new models.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭Ronan

So it is not so much a repair centre, as a replacement one :)

Rang up today myself to get mine repaired.
Was only on hold about 10 mins and the guy on the phone was v.friendly.

I spoke to a nice German girl when I called. Even though my machine was broken they have no problem replacing it and they were pleasant aswell. It makes the whole thing alot more bearable.

I wish some other companies would take a leaf out of MS's book regarding their customer service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,267 ✭✭✭mcgovern

    UPS also v.friendly.
Got a phone call about midday asking if I would be at home around ~1.30pm.
I said I would, and he said he would be there between 1.15-1.45, if not he would ring me back.
Arrived at 1.25 making a joke (360 was packaged in a empty Miller box. suprisingly the guy on the phone from microsoft warned me not to put it in the original box as they go missing from the back of vans).
UPS said it should be back in 5 days, fingers crossed.
