Watched this today and was very impressed with the standard of people taking part. The winning time for the 5 miles was 23.5 minutes roughly which is a pretty impressive feat!

I'd love to compete in this next year myself and am wondering what a realistic goal would be to set, is 30 minutes too optimistic given my pretty low leval of current fitness ?

On a related note the Sportsworld running club would seem ideal to join but looking at the website, all of the runners seem to be female only with the men seemingly in only administratve roles, does anyone know if this is a womens only club ?

    There's a 5miler on July (6 weeks or so) - http://www.dublincitymarathon.ie/race_series_5mile.php

Would that be too soon for you.

I'm training for my first run, its on next week and is 6 mile (10k), I've been training from a fairly low level of fitness, for around 6-7 weeks now, and it's looking like a nice challenge. Hoping for a time of around 60mins.

23.5 is unreal, for 5 miles, thats close to 4minute miles

Whats your 1mile pb? or are you training atm ?

Was a Kenyan marathon runner that won it, forget his name, he was a fair bit ahread of the rest and looked like it was a stroll in the park for him!

Some of the people running were in real pain, they were still coming in at 45 mins when I left. Fair play to them though, takes huge determination to push through the pain barrier and complete something like that.

I havent started running training yet zabbo, not very out of shape, just haven't trained properly in a long long time, 6 weeks would be a tall order though might run/walk it just for the experience :)
My 1 mile pb would be around the 5 min mark probably..but thats a long time ago now!!

Sounds like you know what work is involved. 6 weeks would be enough to get you over the line imo. And would keep you focused and in training. You could build towards another race during the Summer as well.

If you want to get running look at Dublin Graded meets, there's dates on http://www.dublinathletics.com, I think that's the url. Or also consider business Houses races, I don't off-hand know the url. Sorry.

23 and a half is some running. What was the course like?

i did it myself, in 40.56. which was ok i wanted to go under 40. They say it is a fast course with a world record set there in 1993!
