Who should Ireland support in the World Cup?

So I was listening to the radio and theywere asking people to text in who they think the Irish should support in the World Cup seeing as were not in it. Some people said the Ivory coast because their flag is very similar to our own and its their first time qualifying and it'd be nice to see them do well. Others said Poland beacause of the large Polish community in Ireland and it'd be a great atmosphere in the pubs and things for the matches. And then others said England because they are fukking idiots and spawns of the anti-christ.

So anyways who do you think we should all be cheering for in the World Cup this year?

P.S. Before someone feels compeled to tell me as their prone to do on here, I know thiers a soccer forum but thats semi-private, and besides this is more of a geographi-social-political-cultural styley do-hickey.

I don't think we should be cheering anyone.

But if you have to pick a team then it might as well be England as so many here already have copious amounts of practice cheering Svens men at club level week-in week-out.

Dont say England, you will have all the Celtic fans out from under the rocks.

I'll be supporting Poland because my mum was polish and England because my dad was english and if Ireland had qualified i'd have supported them too because i live here.

And if none of the above had qualified i'd support Italy because i like the food!

I'd usually support England and I will again although I've just been reminded that Australia are playing in it as well and as I spent 8mths there recently and had a fantastic time so I'll be supporting them as well!

    Go AUSSIES! :D

Who should Ireland support in the World Cup?
Who ever happens to be in the lead at the time... that way everyone's happy all the time.
Having your cake and eating it too... brilliant.

Poles I think! So we can all join the party if they win! :)

Here's a surprise: I'll support Brazil and Argentina, because they (alone) play the beautiful game.

(Also, any other country that's predominantly Catholic :D )

I'm actually stunned that nobody's mentioned these two yet.

Leaving Mossy's horse fondling fantasies to one side... Brazil FTW.

It's not that I don't want England to win, it's just that I don't think I could put up with the crowing for the next 40 years. You would think 1966 was just yesterday.

I support my two legs because they support me.

Im supporting any team that plays england.

Ok wanting England to win to me is like wanting Liverpool to win the FA cup.....it aint gonna happen because if they did you'd never hear the end of it for years!

Brazil for me as they are just pure entertainment and theyre allways worthy winners!:D

Its not that i dislike the English....but as Tommy himself had put it we just like to see them defeated in things like football and war!hehe

I'll be supporting Italy and Swedan, Italy because I watch a lot of Italian football and Swedan because apart from this season I love watching Ibrahimovich playing so hopefully he'll play better in the WC

    England.

I've even gone to the trouble of getting an England Jersey. The nice red one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 979 ✭✭✭Keedowah

Poland i think - but i hope the English do well.

I cant understand the people who dislike the English and then every weekend cheer on English players...

I think its because their media is always so cocky and self-assured... (Makes it funnier to see them fall!!)

Dunno who I'd follow - will hardly root for England but will hardly root against them... Australia would be a nice team to get behind as they are underdogs - and most aussie's I've met are sound.

(Although I've aquired some good english friends here in london too... but the need for a slagging match is too great!!)

I was going to say England. But now that Rooney is injured I think it will be either Argentina (Heinze) or Portugal (Ronaldo).

On average how many English players are on each Premiership team?
I would really love to know the answer to that one.

It's sort of bred into Celtic fans (not just the steriotypical 16 year old scumbag. The Scottish are worse because they don't have people on boards.ie on their backs for hating the English football team:mad: ) that England are the baddie's. :) I couldn't be more happier to see them go out before the knockout stages.

I win €1100 if Italy win so it's only one team for me. After Brazil, Italy have the best chance of winning so 10/1 was fantastic odds.

I suppose ill have to support Germany. Im moving to Hamburg on the 24th of May. Hamburg is already filled with loads of World Cup Shenanigans. Was over there last week. Big huge blue neon Goalposts all around the city and on top of most of the tall buildings.

There are gonna be massive Screens erected all around the city so it should be a mad buzz being over there while its on.

All I want is a team that plays decent entertaining football to win. So for me I'd be quite happy with Brazil, Holland, Portugal and maybe Argentina. I'd hate to see those bores in England, Germany or Italy win it. Imagine an England Italy final, would be 1-0 at most.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭Sauce

Im gonna be shouting for Australia and Japan.

Australia - because its been so long since they were last there, and they are a sports mad country
Japan - because them seem like such a great nation of people

Id also like to see Spain do well because of the Liverpool players on the team

Italy recently beat Germany 4-1, Holland 3-1 and Ireland 2-1. They have players like Totti, Pirlo (and his sidekick Gatusso), Cameronasi, Gilardino and Luca Toni. Just because they have the best defence in the world I wouldn't call them defensive orientated. Totti is one of the best players in the world to watch. Lippi has them playing really well.

The amount of Liverpool players on the Spanish team are turning me off them!
Im going with Argentina because of the huge amount of Inter players they have.

Brazil - they play the best football and Ronaldinho could possibly have a world cup like maradona did in 86 which would be some spectacle to watch..

I wont be shouting for anybody in particular. Plenty of good football is all i wanna see.

When he's not being sent off at key moments, stamping on people, throwing punches, spitting on people and being an idiot in general, perhaps.

Few players I detest more than him.

England i guess, but at the same stage i don't want to hear them go on about it for the next trilion years.

Well seeing as most Irish football supporters support a Premiership team, and most good Irish players play for Premiership teams, the obvious choice should be England!
