    Awww.

Grand soul gems are big ass magic gems for capturing souls. You'll occasionally find them while adventuring, but stealing them from the various mages guilds is the best way.

Once you have them in your inventory, don't capture any souls or they might be wasted. You cannot empty gems once they're full.

Yeah i think robbing in the mages guilds is teh way to go or do a fwe mages guild missions and you'll pick em up on the way

How far into the game are you

Would you mind using spoiler tags for this kinda thing... friend told me the first post gave him way more info than he wanted...

That said, yes mages guilds are the way to go and if i'm not mistaken one can be purchased from the mystic emporium in the imperial city.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

Oh yes the dramatic weight is ruined! Why could it possibly matter for the story what you have to bribe her with?

Now I agree what Burning Eclipse is saying in general that spoiler tags should be used where possible but in this case as the witch asks you for grand soul gems its not a big secret or plot spoiler

In future put a disclaimer in the title people

Of course, its perfectly okay to do the respectable thing and buy the gems off the guild... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

    I don't think they're actually for sale.

yeah i think you're right here Z, i never remember buying them or else I saw them for sale and thought how odd why would i pay for them when i cant put my l33t thief skills to use and rob em

Don't think they can be bought anyway

They are for sale alright, most of them are actually filled to some degree or other (usually common or greater). I've bought quite a few empty ones as well though.

i have loads of those gems grand common greater etc. does it matter which they are as long as they're soul gems?

also if i want to become a vamp again will i be able to or is there no chance after i change back?!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

once your cured, your cured for good. The game seems open endined, but its a fact that becoming a vampire is a must-happen occurance no matter what, you will become a vampire at some stage, even if you cure yourself when bitten, you will go asleep, and wake up a vampire.

    No you don't....

Vampirism is a disease, use a cure disease potion and your sorted. Healing wont stop it. Or be a wood elf, whose resist disease ability means its very unlikely youll be infected in the first place - or at least I never have been despite fighting a fair few of them. Its very hard to become a vampire by accident, so long as you can find your way to a shop selling cure disease potions.

Ive heard of people sleeping in some areas and getting "dreams" of being bitten/infected. Never happened to me, but if you see garlic hanging over an abandoned camp site , Id take it as a bad sign.

I heard someone talking about a quest, I havn't done it myself, but it involves staying at some Count's fort over night and when you wake up you've been infected.

Or something. I may have dreamed it.

That's good advice, I already had 5 of them starting this but 2 of them had a small charge, I was new to the whole soul-capturing thing so I thought I could just empty them into my enchanted sword, only to find out I then only had 3 grand soul gems. Having already raided all the mages guilds it took a while to find the another two.

Probably Count Skingrad, is it? It also sounds like your man from the Dark Brotherhood.

From the tone of the story, it was neither. But this is second hand information so I don't know.

Yes you do, eventually. It's built into the game, you MUST become a vampire at some stage, so even if you keep curing yourself, one day you will wake up a vampire, after been bitten in your sleep.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

Is that not dependent on where you sleep?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

Dont think so, it's built into the game like, you cant complete the game without becoming a vampire, for the obvious quest reasons.

    Which quest? The main quest?

Just to cut through potential crap here: Are you in fact making stuff up? What are you basing this on? Are you actually just making wild assumptions?

What? you think you have a choice in regard to becoming a vampire? you dont, it's that simple its part of the game. Therefore it will eventually happen. I didnt wanna become a vampire, so refused the offer to become one, cured myself after every contraction of the disease, and yet when I woke up, oh look I was bitten during my sleep now I am a vampire. It's part of the game, and it's quite a heafty quest to get a cure, and the game wouldn't allow you not to do it/miss it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,371 ✭✭✭✭Zillah

You're just repeating yourself. Do you know this for a fact or are you just presuming based on your own experience?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,393 ✭✭✭✭Vegeta

Yeah Zillah is right you don't have to become a vampire to finish the main quest

ok then i am right and you don't have to become a vampire :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,566 ✭✭✭GrumPy

I didnt mean to say you "cant" complete the game, and sorry for that confusion, but becoming a vampire being an important part, It is impossible to avoid it is what I meant*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,393 ✭✭✭✭Vegeta

ooooh that's a different thing altogether, sorry for the mix up sometimes i read what i want to see

Because the quest is there to be done, and it's not one you have a choice in like talking to someone, and deciding it's time to do that quest. You cant decide weather or not you wanna be one. And even if you say no to the dark brotherhood guy, you will eventually contract it, not have a cure at the time. Or just wake up after a quick rest and BOOM vampirism added baby.

Its a disease, with a decent resist disease ability (i.e. Wood Elf) youll almost never catch it, especially if youre an archer. If you do, all you do is go to an alchemist and buy a cure disease potion and/or cast cure disease. Its only triggered on the 3rd day when you sleep. Dont sleep/rest before you get the potion and itll never go all the way.

As for getting bitten in the night with Vampirism automatically added - try something out for me. Reload the save game to before you slept and got bitten in the night. Then sleep. Youll get vampirism. Reload again. Try again. Youll get it again. In fact, every single time you reload that "prior" save and sleep youll get vampirism...

Now reload and cast Cure Disease, drink a potion, eat a mandrake root or get blessed at a shrine. Then sleep. You wont get vampirism, even in the very same bedroll.

The explanation is simple - players who report getting bitten in the night didnt realise they had been infected already. They went about for 3 days. Slept, "suddenly" becoming a vampire and because they hadnt realised they were infected they decided they had been bitten in the night.

You can only become a vampire by choice or carelessness. Its perfectly avoidable and far from inevitable.

Oooh, now I get what people are talking about. Yeah they're just not paying attention.

You mightn't notice but if you're fighting a vampire it might pop up saying "You have been infected with blah blah".

I made sure I noticed every time, and ALWAYS had a cure  If I had the want or patience, I'd restart the game, record the whole damn thing from start to finish, to prove my point. I honestly cant see a way of avoiding the vampire quest, even with the speicies that cant catch it as easy, will wake up some day with it.

Where and when did this happen to you? Was it part of a quest?
