...will it give sufficient performance so that I can play videos and music directly from it without any problems?
in short: yes. (Ensure your machine is USB2.0;))

I am rapidly running out of space on my internal hard disk that came with my laptop, so I'm looking for a better storage solution. If I get an external drive (like this one), will it give sufficient performance so that I can play videos and music directly from it without any problems? Or should they really only be used for storage? Anybody have any experience with Western Digital My Book Essential Edition Drives for this?

Yeah you won't have any problems playing stuff from them.

I have one of the WD external mybook drives but I haven't really used it much yet.....it seems nice though :p It's quiet obviously enough as it doesn't need any fans, and it'll power on and off with your pc, so you can pretty much plug it in and ignore it.

I have a One Touch 250 Gig and they are great, saying that it did fail before the 5 years were up, Maxtor (Based in Bray) replaced it with no questions asked, they even sent me the new drive before I returned the broken one, I highly recommend them. They offer USB 2.0 or Firewire.

Ive had first hand experience using a 300GB Maxtor over firewire back in 2004 for about a year and can tell you that you should have no problem running programs directly of it even with the more common USB2.0.

The one think i must say is that when the drive powers itself down to save energy it can take 5-10 seconds to reinitialise again when you want to use it.

At the time it save me so much hassle.....so go for it!!!!

Based in Bray? Is there a retail shop attached to that do you know? Can you buy direct?

I don't know, I'd say it's just a factory. I was living in England when I had to send it back, and it went to Bray :)
