Any opinions on what the worst newspaper is. I think Britains 'Sun' newspaper is the worst. I mean youd have to question the IQ of some of the readers of this rag when the most important story is some celebrity pratts love life. Equally that anti Irish rag, the Sunday Ido, is probrably up there aswell.

The star, about a million (crap) stories a page and 20 words written on each one.

the herld, its just the times for toddlers, turning more tabloid every day

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭Vulpiner

There are a few good columists in the Sunday Independent. Dont knock them all.

    On my list:
The Star, Sun, News of the World , Ireland on Sunday et al.

Paul Williams is about the only good thing in the Sunday World.

The only thing worth reading really is the Sunday Times. Best value for money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,564 ✭✭✭✭whiskeyman

You didnt state what type of content they're "worst" at.
If you want thrashy celeb gossip and sport stories, the tabloids are excellent.
The Irish Times is the "worst" for such content.

Papers are there to feed the market for different sections and audiences.
If anything, this is just a tabloid bashing thread...

    There's a News/Media forum too ya know...

    Agreed.

The Star/Sunday World are moronic rags. Outdated file pictures, sensationalist crap, articles as brief as they are misleading.

The Sun has mild entertainment value, and st least makes no pretense for what it is (bar the ridiculous "Oirish Sun" moniker).

The Examiner is overpriced, although well put together, but has never been accepted as a truly nationwide newspaper, understandably so for the most part.

    Ireland on Sunday is muck...

The Daily Mail during "Big Brother" season is unreal! No other news seems to happen in Daily Mail land at this time of year, or at least if it does, they clearly don't count it as being as important as knowing how many showers Science has had in the week or how Saskia's feeling got hurt the other morning! :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,108 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Close call between the sun and star, both absolute rags imo.

Its a reasonably good paper , dont know about value for money though as in my case i only ever read the same few sections, driving, magazine, sport, main section, occasionaly the review and I sometimes skip the sport as Stephen Jones rugby coverage can be unbearable at times! The rest get chucked.

Tabloids can be unbelievable at times, important things can be happening in this country and what do you get on the front page? some 'celebrity' shaggin some other 'celebrity' with a 5 page spread on it inside:mad:

I've voted the Irish Independent because it pretends to be a proper paper but some of the content is truly appalling. At least nobody believes the nonsense published in the redtops. The same can't be said of the Indo.

I remember when the Mail was a real newspaper, and only wrote about such things as Julie Burchill's opinions on the "working class" and Princess Di's death affecting house prices*

The Daily Mail was also the most sectarian paper in Britain, particularly against the Irish, which is Ironic considering theyve come in here now to make money.

Seconded. It's not even consistant. Fr Brian Thingy reporting from Catholic ireland three pages away from 1500-sex line numbers.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Ireland On Sunday is the worst. It pretends to be a quality newspaper but it's full of drivel, its columnists are freaks and I wouldn't wipe my dog's arse with it.

The Sun might be a comic but it's got plenty of pictures of good-looking chicks in it and sometimes that's all a man needs to see while eating his Weetabix of a cold winter morn.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭melekalikimaka

ya can always tell a sun reader on a bus. no matter what paper they spin it to page 3, panic at no boobies and flip to the back, don't see wayne rooney(at this points there is a quick glance round for a hidden camers, convinced its a joke of some sort). finally opens it up, if its the indo or times, a quizical look and its dropped, mirror/star, a relieved sigh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

I can't stand any paper except the irish times now. The indo has just become a complete rag paper...and as for the rest....

has to be the indo, always jumping on the bandwagon and hyping things up (eg cocaine use, bebo speeding, tony o reilly etc etc) despite claiming to be a quality broadsheet. At least you expect it from the tabloids

    I've voted for the Sindo.

It's pure rubbish. It lives on its reputation of years ago and is no longer what I would consider a newspaper.

IMHO it's nothing better than a poor quality weekly edition of VIP or similar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 142 ✭✭catholicireland

Sunday Indo - west-brit, toffy-nosed prod paper, as described by them not me!!

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 2,432 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peteee

I voted the Sun but really that has no illusions as to what it is, and is mildly entertaining.

I *should* have voted the Independent/Sunday Independent, pure rubbish masquerading as a quality newspaper. What worse is that has much higher readership then the Times.

Sunday Times is easily the best paper, great value for money too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 442 ✭✭Lambsbread

The Irish Times and the Sunday Times are the only papers i would buy. The red-tops are just toilet paper.

On an aside, I have stopped watching sky news ever since they have been sponsored by The Sun. What a load of complete sh ite. Sky news has gone down big time in the over the past five years.

Ireland on Sunday is just a Sunday edition of the Oirish Daily Mail, so its clear what a ball of sh1te that is.

I found it so hard to choose between the mail and the sun, but eventually the sun won. I agree with the opinions expressed here about the Sunday Independent too, its full of 'socialite' twats that the world would be better off without.

Hmm, you left off the one that offends me the most in terms of poor grammar, spelling, and general shoddy penmanship: The Sunday World. I have voted for The Evening Herald as a close second, though I also hate The Sunday Independent for being a tabloid in broadsheet's clothing.

The Irish Times and The Guardian are the best daily newspapers around in my opinion.

Sunday Indo - west-brit, toffy-nosed prod paper, as described by them not me!!

Do have a problem with protestants?
Your username is not the nicest.

Equating protestants with 'west Brits' is a particularly shallow and inaccurate generalisation principally made by ignorant and sectarian idiots.
And don't get me started on your f*cking signature.

    Some famous Irish protestants.

    - Charles Parnell
    - Wolfe Tone
    - Robert Emmet
    - Henry Grattan
    - Sean O'Casey
    - WB Yeats
    - JM Synge
    - Samuel Beckett

Rubbish. The Sun is the worst. The fact that it has 'no illusions' etc makes no difference. Westlife have 'no illusions' etc and are still utter crap.

The Observer is far better than The Sunday Times in my opinion.

What I said is the description they made of themselves. If you read the paper last week on the front page you will see in the first paragraph how they describe themselves. I did not link prods with west-brits, the indo did!

So get down off your high horse, we dont care about famous irish prods.

The Independent has illusions of grandeur when in fact is just crap as well. Thats far worse then what the sun is.

My vote goes to the Irish Times; a tedious mish-mash of wire-service reports, clunky Dail/Court/Tribunal 'highlights', features whose subject matter few give a sh1te about and what seems to be the entire sports section of the Guardian.
To top this all off we have the editorial and letters section - a curious mixture of the banal, pretentious, and holier-than-thou preaching from people who never got over student politics.
Their supplements are nothing more than revenue-spinning adverstising filler which they seem to think are an actual bonus for the reader.

    Inside today-2 part property supplement

Gee thanks- a load of ads for gaffs I can't afford; you're really spoiling us.

    For this they charge €1.60-****.

    'loadsa gossip'

Oddly, you missed out on the worst newspaper of all in that Poll:

    The Daily Telegraph.

Bigoted, ridiculously Conservative, bafflingly pompous journalism. Altho, to be fair, it's often worth a read purely to see what the enemy's thinking...

EDIT: Just in case ppl equate "enemy" with English, I should point out that I'm English. I meant "enemy" as in neo-con fascist nitwits having a go at whatever ethnic minority might have offended them today.
