Deadlifting with a regular bar vs an Olympic bar

    I deadlift with a regular bar - just a normal 1" diameter York bar that I got in Argos. But lately I've been thinking that the bar might be holding me back due to the fact that it doesn't have rotating sleeves like an Olympic bar. When I fail on a deadlift it's very often becasue the bar rotates and wrenches my grip open.

    The question is: should I switch to an Olympic bar, will this decrease this rotation? Or should I stick with the regular bar, "tough it out" and try to develop better grip strength.

    BTW I use a grip which is like a cross between a pronated and hook grip. Same grip both hands, I can't manage an alternate grip at all.

    I actually have an Olympic weight set but don't use it for deads as there isn't enough weight for a sufficent challenge. Because of this lack of weight I'm not sure whether the Olympic bar will make much difference to my grip when doing a heavy set of deads. Depending on what's suggested in this thread I will invest in some extra plates for the Olympic bar or will just continue with the regular bar.

    Personally i would go for the Olympic bar, there is a big difference between the grip strenght required to hold a bar, and to stop another bar spinning under weight.

    Besides, why inhibit your back development that way????

    I reckon really try to develop an alternate grip, even if you have to drop the weight for a while, because at some stage your hands will just give out if you keep using an overhand grip.And your back won't get the work it needs because of this, it'll just be your grip giving out.

    Get the olymic bar, it will be useful eventually. Then, whenever your doing your DLs use one hand pronated, the opposite supinated.
