For those who don't believe there's anything in Biblical prophecy, have a read of this passage from the Book of Revelations, written about 2,000 years ago, and then answer the question at the end.

'The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— the name of the star is Wormwood.
A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.'
    Revelations 8:10-11

    Now here's the question:

    What's the Russian for 'wormwood'?

Hint: It's in the news today and it's not 'Smirnoff', which was the guess of one of my younger sillier colleagues.

Well do bear in mind that Russian has a different alphabet. So there is not going to be an exact transliteration. But the fact that the name of the plant and the name of the Russian for wormwood sounded so similar became a real talking point about 10 years ago.

One of the 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse' in the Book of Revelation. Those that foretell the end of the world.

I'm writing a script for college about Armageddon and all that nonsense and I was reading up on Revelations and one of the things I noticed was that it mentions New Babylon, which is three cities that grew so big that their borders crossed each other, which is a bit like that Megalopolis in america, where, I think New York, Washington and Philidelphia (I think one or two more but I can't remember) all grow into each others borders.

But you can find parallels to the bible in everything if you look from certain angels!:D

No mutants or gruesome photos or anything, just a tour of the ghost-town(s) surrounding the place.

The book of revelations is the only interesting book in the Bible. It's hilarious.

From what I can see, the Wormwood - Chernobyl connection really is in the eye of the beholder. EG: "Still more confusion comes from the fact that the word "wormwood" is used in the English text of the Apocalypse, whose usage as the name of a plant does not necessarily match that of the original Greek.

Meh, we're all screwed anyway. Bible or no Bible, we're doomed. I read Revelations a couple of times when I was in secondary school. I can't make too much sense what what is actually going to happen, except that the Apocalypse is foretold by many significant signs and most of us will die horrible deaths.

Sun burning out in 5 billion or whatever years? Yep, everyone's going to die. Most of us however won't die in the Apocalypse though, unless one of us achieves immortality at some point.

Humans will be extinct way before that.
Wonder what we would be like if we didn't go extinct and evolved. Either way, there will be no humans. :)

Unless of course one lucky boardser achieves immortality, and manages to survive the inevitable nuclear war, and the wiping out of the rest of the human race. :D

    That's uncanny.

Wormwood sounds a bit like Silkwood, which is a film about a meltdown in a Nuclear Facility...the link is there for all to see...

According to southpark, it ivolves having sex with children. I must investigate.

Why are people so open to believe stuff people tell them....

Just one of many links that talk about this myth

    http://www.spectator.co.uk/bnfl/article8.html

The final, and strangest, myth of all is that this truly was a biblical tragedy. The trouble is that ‘chernobyl’ does not actually translate as ‘wormwood’ (Artemesia absinthium), with its consequent apocalyptic connotations, at all. In fact, it means ‘mugwort’ (Artemesia vulgaris), a related but different herb. Close enough for myth, but no cigar.

Well, the creator of the technique became immortal until he was hit by a train in 1892, so I guess it will work for me.

Nope, I just sort of veered off topic, and am now trying to become immortal... Monty Python getting involved can only be a good thing though.

It's not actually called the Book of Revelations either by the way...

Now who wants to hear about how the bible predicts barcodes and how every barcode has the number of the beast hidden on it?

Well... in the Book of Revelation (notice there isn't an 's') it says something along the lines of how you will not be able to buy or sell goods without the mark of the beast, and that the mark of the beast is the number 666.

    Now look at a barcode

    http://www.lac-bac.gc.ca/iso/tc46sc9/barcode.gif

See the 3 lines that come down further than all the others? Notice how much those lines look like the lines that represent the number 6? Which you can also see in that barcode? Every barcode has those 3 paterns on it... and as such everything you buy and sell has the mark of the beast on it...

Seriously though, do people actually trawl through the bible when something happens to see if there's a passage they can switch around or manipulate so it's some sort of "prophecy"?

Quiet clearly the answer to all this, is that time travel is possible (I still stand by me theory that Einstein made up all that crap and we're stuck within those limits simply because we won't believe otherwise) and the catholic church is jumping back in time to re-write the bible to coincide with today's events so as to gain more power and eventually rule the world with an iron fist and killings and mass oppression and no chocolate M&M's. Just peanut.

You could trawl through Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and find all sorts of predictions, revelations and secret codes if you wanted to. People used to find the devils messages by playing Elvis Presley records backwards.

think thats spooky? What about this one:

"and the fowl of the land shall fall sick as sure as the sword shall strike at the non believer. And the masses shall propogate this sickness and it shall spread thorughout the land. Only he who is free of cruelty shall be spared from Armageddon. Those who fall sick shall forever know torment"

Bird flu anyone? Thats taken from my slightly mental cousins "book of psycho ramblings" so it has to be true. He also succesfully preducted the construction of the Petronas towers, the huge increase in the price of dry cleaning in recent years, and the opening of the Kwik fit on the Malahide road.
    whoooooooooo.

I first became aware of this nearly 20 years ago, shortly after the original explosion. It was on the news that it had caused a lot of new interest in the bible in Russia because the Russian translation of wormwood rang a few bells with people who were coping with the disaster at Chernobyl.

Also, in the Bible we have at home that book is actually called the Book of the Apocalypse. Not Revelation.

Maybe they were talking about Torchwood instead of wormwood?

    Rofl @ The OP.

I bet he's sitting in a dark room with a hurling helmet on.

Seriously people, unless you can see the world coming to an end with your own two eyes, never believe any of this nonsense.

Actually if you read up on it chernobyl isnt the russian for wormwood, its just an old mistranslation that stuck. Sorry to spoilt it for ya, but no revelations here.
