Who is your favourite poker player? Is it because of their skill level or perhaps their personality etc...

Who aswell do you think is the best poker player in the world....

Players that i admire in particular are Gus Hansen, The Devilfish, Donnacha O'Dea and Ram Vaswani.

Phil Ivey imo has to be in top 3 of any list

I think we relate players we like to either the flamboyant (hansen) or possibly to those that closely resemble our own style of play

    I like Annie Duke

my favourite player is dan negranu. he is proven as an absolutley fantastic player with a number of good results. the main reason i admire him so much is his attitidue. he seems avery well rounde and intelligent person and i have learnt alot from his blog.

the best poker player to have ever lived IMO is stu ungar. if you havent read the book " the man behind the shades" you should. one of the most gifted players to ever be and a tragic story of how it all went wrong for him.

    thats my 2c anyway.......

    cecelia nordenstam
    clonie gowan

    all top notch imo

i also like negreanus blog (its mad the way he talks about being up/down 200k like it means nothing), and hes a funny guy.
i like Layne Flack, fearless player
and Phil Laak is funny at the table too.
I think Patrick Antonius may be the best player in europe at the moment.

    John Juanda
    Chris Ferduson or Ram Vaswani

    Personalitywise:
    Chris Ferguson
    Phil Laak
    Andy Bloch
(theres another dozen, mostly European players I could name here, like The Hendon Mob etc).

    DeV.

Daniel Negreanu (unbelievable talent, and great attitude)
    Phil Ivey (as above)
Johnny Chan (great player, tied with brunson for bracelets)
Doyle Brunson (surprised no1 said him yet, 10 wsop bracelets and super systyem!)
Phil Hellmuth (great player, fun to watch. did anyone see him commentating on Ultimate Poker Challenge? such a cheesebag)
Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson (he can cut fruit in half with cards)
Scotty Nguyen (one of the funniest at the table, especially when drinking)

After watching High Stakes poker I'm a Sam Farha man all the way. His post flop play is top notch. Negraneau looked like an excellent player too and of course Greenstein took that bad beat very well.

I didn't say him because regardless of all the bracelets I don't actually like how he plays I chose people who play a similar game to me.

    watching doyle doesn't excite me.

    What? im serious!.

Emmanuele Petit is a muppet. Not for getting beat heads up by Ollie Boyce but for spurning her advances in a previous round.
He will look back and rue the day!.

Rounders, let me know what you were drinking today as you cant be sober saying you would about KL.

My favourite players are Phil Ivey, Mike Matusow and Gus Hansen. Think they all have a good aggressive style. I dont think Mike gets the recognition he deserves because of his mouth and his past.

    negraneu
    ivey
    ferguson
    farha

I believe they are the best out there skillwise at the mo

    entertainment wise

    hellmuth
mike the mouth hands down. I

'd watch these on tv befroe the above becuase you know it's going to be a great game of poker :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,696 ✭✭✭Hectorjelly

I lost a huge amount of respect for negraneu after watching the high stakes poker episodes, he pretty much played like a retard. He was constantly getting into reraised pots with substandard hands out of position, then paying off better hands or folding the best hand. His preflop call of a reraise out of position with KJs to greenstein was bad (greenstein didnt exactly cover himself with glory that hand) His preflop call with KJo against deeb was beyond awfull. His strategy would of made sense if they were much deeper and he was playing bad players.

I was amazed by the amount of players in the high stakes poker episodes who valued Ax where x < 7, the amount of times I say people raise and call raises with A5o was unreal.

My favourite player is Sammy Farha. I don't know what it is, he's a charasmatic motherf**ker but also one hell of a poker player - he doesn't play ABC poker, he'll play with any two cards and outplay his opponent on the flop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

    Ivey, Negraneu, Jonny Chan.

Entertainment value I like Scotty Nguyen, some of his one liners are just brilliant "you call this its all over baby."

I was very impressed (as was everybody I would think) by Jonathon wong in the Irish Open I think he is definately one for the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭loosecannon

i never got the chance to see him play in any way, but i read a superb book on his life called 'One of a kind' by Nolan Dalla and from all the information in that book i doubt there was ever or even now will ever be a player as good as he was, 3 time WSOP winner before he's 40 and i found his entire story fascinating to say the least, a riveting read

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 9,035 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

So that would be Stuey Ungar then?

sorry mate, i managed to forget to write his name down in the piece!

    yes stu 'the kid' ungar

that's who my vote goes to

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,404 ✭✭✭Goodluck2me

personally my respect goes to phil ivey for sheer class in the field..hes taken the "new" game and mastered it, hes one of the few players you really believe could have mastered the game in any era and at any stakes. entertainement value is Phil Hulmuth, wouldnt you love to give him some back at the WSOP live table? my award for most annoying player is devilfish..the amount of unfunny things he says is ridiculous.... i.e. 888 cup " im not saying my uncle was unlucky but he was stranded on a desert island and rescued by the titanic..."

Has to be Mike caro and Connie, both for different reasons !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 481 ✭✭The C Kid

All 7 ZeeJustins, and JJ Prodigy's Granny. :D

Patric Antonius and Matt Matros also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭hotspur

    Skillwise:
Ivey - by reputation and achievement (particularly cash games) more than what I've seen of him to be honest
Negraneu - wonderful ability although he doesn't care anymore
Hansen - took on the best cash players in the world and outplayed them on the Superstars of Poker
    Vaswani and Antonius too.

For entertainment and caring about what happens:
Tony G - I'll never root against anyone more than him, pure WWE stuff
Hellmuth - always, always entertaining to watch his reaction to losing
Matusow - gets into funny wars with people

any chance his play was some sort of metagame, trying to make people lost respect for him so he can get some action outside of the Big Game?

    Suzie Isaacs
    Al Krux
    Chris Ferguson
    Dan Harrington

I rate perseverance, optimism, humility higher than skill, arrogance, pride.

Devilfish, he raises with anything all the time... Last time i saw him play b4 the 888 cup was when he has over half the chips on a table with Ferguson, Helmuth, Ivey and a few others... Thibk it was the monte Carlo millions

    Ivey
    Harrington
    Vaswani(sp)

I saw that... hellmuth wasn't there i think.... john juanda was though.... He was definatly chip leader for a good while, not sure about the half the chips part.... he was right in that instance to raise often... the table was playing very tight...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,857 ✭✭✭Atlas_IRL

u sure? i thought Helmuth kept saying im gonna call you devilfish every hand but never did he got blinded away i think... After a while Ferguson began to go all in against devilfish every so often... Do you know who won in the end?

Devilfish was card dead as well and still outplayed them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,679 ✭✭✭Daithio

It was Devilfish, Juanda, Ivey, Matusow, Hellmuth and Hansen I think?
