I understand the Critical Mass cycle ride, but Reclaim the Streets? From what? For what? Always seems to be just an excuse for a mill-up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,215 ✭✭✭FX Meister

Those cycle rides usually only attract about ten people really. It's a shame.

What is the point of reclaim the streets? It seems just to be a riotous (pun intended) booze-up.

What about people who for reasons of injury, illness or old age cannot cycle and are either reliant on public transport or a private vehicel?Should they be forced to stay at home while a bunch of hippies riots in town?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

maybe the method isnt very well thought out but you'd have to agree the power has to be fought at least once a year?? we're in a modern european society not communist china ffs.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,397 ✭✭✭✭Degsy

Yeah, but if you're gonna fight the power do it properly, burn the city to the ground once a year, storm the odd prison and string up a few politicians from lamposts but this business of **** around on bicycles and playing tom-toms whilst full of cannabis isnt going to do anything.

Yeah, what can't they just stay at home for the few hours it's going on? Why should I be forced to not park in their parking spaces while those lazy people cruise up in their cheap cars and park right at the door.

It doesn't PREVENT or STOP anyone from using their private cars/buses or taxi's.
At worst it just makes them go a little slower.

I really hope the cops beat the piss out of those tree huggers this year, i love when that happens

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

Don't you think traffic is already moving bloody slow enough? The average cyclist travels through dublin traffic far faster than the average vehicle, so wtf is the problem?

Reclaim the streets is a pointless action normal done by hippys with no job and no car so they can have a feeling of accomplishment.

Go to tesco's and get a job pack the shelves with Orange Juice at least your doing something contructive with your time and no hassel to others.

Rather be a liberal tree-hugger than a conservative Bush hugger.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Ah yes, but itf it's not causing hassle to people, then hwo will you know the point is being made in the first place? Get out and walk to work every once in a while you lazy git! It's summer!

I agree.Remember the famous mayday "protests"?The hippies were all for reclaiming the streets from "the man" but when the cops gave them a taste of reall anarchy they went whining off to their rich daddies to prosecute the cops!
I hope Donal Corcoran is gonna be there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

Maybe a few cars will do a carmageddon/death race on them 15 points for the tree huggers \o/.

    That would f*cking rule.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,397 ✭✭✭✭Degsy

Or if eveybody else launched a counter-protest called "reclaim the streets from the hippies by giving them a good kicking"...i'd SOO be there!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭ferdi

the hippies take a couple of streets for one day a year.
what about the farmers, taxi drivers, bus drivers, anti war, republican marches and protests that go on practically ever weekend in the capital?

you people are just cynical shells of human beings who have had every last shred of idealism squeezed from your bodies by 'witty', sardonic american comedy combined with your crappy and unhappy little lives.

    Wooh..get you!!!

The hippies have no business taking anything over for two seconds because they're useless, idealistic parasites and everybody is sick of them.

Kinda sad but there is no reclaim the streets this year cos no one has organised it.There is instead this:

The theme of this year's May Day march in Dublin, organised by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions, is 'Organise Now: Protect Workers' Dignity ; Join a Trade Union'.

Assemble at Parnell Square at 2.30 pm, Saturday 29th April.

March to meeting at Liberty Hall.

Social in Cois Life Bar, Liberty Hall Centre, 4 pm. to 7.30 pm.

All trade unions, community, campaign and working class organisations welcome. All trade unionists and activists welcome. Bring your banners.

Yes, because if you don't love trees then you automatically love Bush, thank god people are so one-dimensional.

In what way does chosing option A over option B dictate that there is no option C? Or indeed, D, E, F and so on...

Your thinking is kinda one-dimensional, so thank God for you too!

Anwyay, we all know that there's no such thing as global warming, war for profit or a finite supply of oil - so lets all drive to our heart's content!

I usually go along to this each year. I'm not useless, idealistic or a parasite. I probably give a lot more to society than you do. What does that make me? Keep your ingorance to yourself please.

Why are they reclaiming the streets from the cars when the streets are only put there in the first place so cars could get around the place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,647 ✭✭✭✭Victor

No the streets were built in the time of pedestrians and horse carriages. they were not built for cars.

So then can we all keep our roads that were built since about the turn of last century for our cars then?

Yes, but you can't drive on them :D !

On a more serious note, what are the opinions of drivers and advocates of brute force in terms of dealing long-term with the problems of personal v public transport?

I've just been out for a smoke from work, I work on one of Melbourne's main streets - Collins St., and I've seen about five hundred cyclists going past in a group, with a police escort.

    Related?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,776 ✭✭✭✭Princess Consuela Bananahammock

That probably happens two or three times a week in other countries!

But THESE poxy hippies arent trying to stop a war..they're trying to mess up everybody's day for them because they've got nothing better to do.
Never mind sending in the gardai, they should have a paramilitary force of thugs armed with hurley sticks for just such a contingency and i shall be happy to offer my services!!

They always say lesser minds resort to violence, Degsy.

Go ahead, reclaim the streets. Mess up the terrible car drivers day. If there were no cars your streets would be mud piles and you would not be able to cycle on them.
If you want the streets so much then i suggest you pay road tax which keeps them in good enough shape for all road users to use then.
In fact maybe we should organise a protest at cyclists using the roads without paying for the privilege.
I cycle and walk to work whenever i can, but i dont feel like making life hard for the motorist either. But then i am one of those rare cyclists who obeys traffic signals too.

Why don't they try organise their "reclaim the streets" to coincide with European car free day?

That'd make a bit more sense.

Because the whole concept is a load of rubbish.People pay a fortune for cars, insurance, motor tax, petrol and all the other stuff that goes with it and they arent going to leave thier cars at home bacause a bunch of unemployed,dreddlock-sporting layabouts tells them to.

So no RTS this year cause noone organised it eh? Big shock, they were probably all too stoned to do it, or too busy out singing to trees or something.
