The biggest lies will be the amount of people that say they can speak Irish. It will be totally exaggerated. The Irish inferiority complexes again, tell lies to hide your ignorance.

I saw it in my house already. Also, one girl is claiming she is Roman Catholic, hahahahha.

My folks fill mine out every time; I had a read over it and they put me down as fecking Roman Catholic again, so after a "you are Catholic" "I am in my arse Catholic" to-and-fro it was scribbled out.

Lordie that made me feel like I was 15.

My friend is under the impression that if you are down in the records as a RC you should be one on the census...I think she misses the point...
She is not one and her thoughts were wrong!

Oh, and fill out your own youngin'.

Yeah, housemate put down Roman Catholic, when he's never ever gone to mass the whole time I've been living with him.
I think a lot of it is the Irish guilt complex. The lads and ladies from outside the pale think they've disappointed mammy if they say "no religion".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,467 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

I know my flatmate put down 'Roman Catholic' because she's a teacher and was afraid of it being checked up on by the Department of Education...

As if Religion and Education weren't mutually exclusive things!

i have left the 'race' and 'religion' sections blank on my census form as i think these factors should be irrelevant if we are to progress.

She should know that the whole thing is totally confidential. No other department (apart from the central statistics office) gets to see any of the census forms... It even says on the form that its confidential...

Yeah, I tried explaining that to her but she's 'not taking the chance'....

I'd love to know how over-exagerated the figures for Irish speakers and Roman Catholics are going to be in the results of the census. I'd say they could probably be halved from whatever result we actually get.

I'm Catholic apparently - my father filled the forms in. Well, technically, it's true as I've never been debaptised. o_O

How would one be debaptised? Does it involve watersports?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

I'll check back in the morning for the best suggestion as to what I should put down as my religion. Think!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,730 ✭✭✭✭simu

You'd have to just sweat a lot in an ecclesiastical setting, I'd imagine. Give back the baptism water.

Its a shame people lie on the census form, its only a statistical survey for the benefit of our population...

People are just proving how ignorant they are if they lie. There is no need for it...

Those people shouldnt be so paranoid... it says its confidential afterall...

Certain races may be more prone to certain health defects, knowledge of the composition of the population helps plan for things like this.

Modelling people's behaviour is aided by knowledge of a person's religion, at least when you're dealing with macro statistics.

I'd advise that you fill in these questions before you submit your form, not because there will be a punishment (which there wouldnt be for this), but because it helps the country plan for the future. If you want to get past these things, then fill them in. Accurate information will show how people are no longer Roman Catholic, if people don't fill it out accurately then it will seem the Church is more powerful/relevent than it is. Race statistics will show that Ireland isn't 'being flooded' with useless immigrants but instead is evolving into a more varied society. To move past things you have to identify what those things are.

but there aren't any behaviour question, so the Gov would be generalising

    .

You may not regard yourself as a catholic, and that’s your business. But in parts of Belfast, murderous, half human “loyalist” thugs would still kill you because to them you will always be a catholic.

Two people in my house lied about the Irish thing. I had a go at them on the basis that it's important for the country to know how many people can actually speak the language.

You don't need to be debaptised. When I was sixteen I asked a priest what you would have to do to leave the Catholic Church in an official sense and he told me that by telling him of my intention I had done it.

Am I the only one who thinks all this wah wah im not a catholic, im writin jedi, fcuk the government theyre not finding out what race i am nonsense is fcuking sad? I dont go to mass, doubt Ive been to one since our end of school mass bar subsequent christenings of relatives, but fcuk sake is it such a big deal? I know muslims who drink, do drugs, dont go to the mosque often, but they and everyone else would still consider most of them muslims, and Im sure they nearly all ticked the Islam box on the form. Im not religious, but like most people I was baptised, so its ridicilous thinking Im cool by ticking Agnostic/Athiest or whatever.

Also, despite 12 years of enduring it in school Im foolin nobody, a big tick in the No box for Irish fluency :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,856 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

My family is supposedly Roman Catholic also... My dad filled out the form.

    Gonna be pretty inaccurate results.

What the f*ck? Is it "such a big deal" to NOT be Catholic? Your Muslim friends consider themselves as such, good for them; if someone doesn't consider themselves Muslim, they should just jot it down anyway? What are you on? It'll be a statistically corrupt census if everyone does that.

Does it matter if you're living in the country and aren't on the census thingy? I haven't got an address atm so haven't been on any census forms.

Absolutely, I know plenty of Roman Catholics who don't attend mass regularly but they are still Roman Catholics. However, it's important for people who don't have a religion to be able to record that and for the country to acknowledge it.

The bottom line is that there will be more recorded Roman Catholics and Irish speakers on the census than actually exist in Ireland today, and that makes it inaccurate.

Putting Jedi or Chuck Norris on the census form is ludicrous, it completely devalues the document.

The census is going to be innacurate anyway, for example, one question was when was the house built. Seeing as we are renting the place, we have no bloody idea, and neither did the landlord.
    So we guessed.

it's just the nature of things, certain types of information won't be available or will be unknown, and i'm sure the CSO have a margin of error to compensate for that, likewise the whole irish thing [i put down yes, but said i done it 'less often' which is true, i can speak irish, but it only used on the rare occasion]

I think technically you we're supposed to be put down on the form in the house you we're in at the time it was supposed to be filled out. Even if you don't live there like. Thats what i've been told. I was over in a friends at the time but I was put down at home anyway.

I haven't put down on any either like LadyLotts, guess the population statistic will be out by 2 anyway when they count it up :)

Should leave out the sex question as well and we'd be saved the old "women make up 98% of the population but have only 1.4% of the top jobs" kind of stuff. Or indeed why not leave the pc and internet questions blank as well c'os then eircom could say hey there aren't any pcs in the country so why are we supplying broadband...

Your guess contains more information than 'dunno'.
    Sets a ballpark.

As for religion - writing 'Jedi' or 'Chuck Norris' makes it clear that not only do you not have a religion but you consider the whole idea ludicrous. Same as voting for the monster raving loony party in the UK.

Ask! Or talk to the CSO and get a form.

Even hotels and prisons are meant to fill these out.
