Sorry for the typo in the heading.

This is my new omnibus thread for this week. I understand that I may start two such threads per week. My week begins on Thursday.

I thought I would share some photos of the area I was born in. This event was in April 1953 so I will make this my birthday thread.

They look like holiday snaps. People generally don't like looking at other peoples' holiday snaps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,513 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

    These just aren't any good!

You're photograhing other people's art in the hope that it will mean your photographs are then artistic!
The beauty is in the objects you're photographing, not your in photography, sorry.

Also, learn how to use light. This not criticism, but advice.

while I don't think your shots are as bad as some on this thread (:D ) I think the problem is you are not thinking hard enough about what you are actuallly photographying.

With a photo ask yourself 2 questions

    - What do you want the viewer to be looking at

    - Why should the viewer look at that in the first place

The Luas track shot is good because you have a focal point (the man) and the composition of him looking into the distance along the track is interesting.

A lot of your shots are just of a house, a wall, a shape. These are not very interesting, especially when they are all head on. You aren't even using the shapes in an interesting manner, which could save the pictures even if the object itself is boring. A boring object seen from a new fresh perspective or angle has been the making of some great photographs.

But a house front head on is not very interesting. I pass a hundred on the way home from work. What are you trying to show us that we cannot see a million times by just looking at a house.

You need to move around, try and find intersting angles and shapes with in the objects.

Are you actually taking on board what other posters are saying to you or are you just determined to p1ss people off by continually posting banal and irrelevant pictures.
You do realise that there are plenty of free sites on the net that you can post your picturesa in a gallery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Colours are good in the wall+plant photo, but I think it'd be more suited to a background than a self contained photograph. (Background either in the sense of within the photograph, or for design purposes)

Graffitti photos have the same thing as taking photos of other people's art... it's not yours...

Woops I do ! I know that I know very little about photography but I enjoy lurking having a look at all the photos posted...and of course I wouldn't dream of posting one of mine  .

What I wouldn't mind seeing is others going out to where these "snaps" were taken and showing what they can do with the subject matter. The guy obviously enjoys photography as a hobby and everyone to their own.

If your lens will allow it you could set a lower number apature for the shots of people, which would make the background more blurry.

You have to much detail in your background which distracts from the foreground (the people, who we are supposed to be focused on). For example the people on the bridge don't stand out from the in focus background, which distracts the eye and makes it harder to make out the shape of the people.

Thanks for your comments. After a good number of years mainly using point and click cameras I find the transition back to an slr is slow.

lads you can tell she is a minger, even from behind ...

Anyway, this is a good example of what I was talking about. To me my eyes were drawn straight to the faces of the two people behind of the, ahem model, in the background. All the detail in the background really distracts from the woman we are supposed to be looking at.

I hear what you are saying jools though about getting back into the habit of using the extra features of an SLR over a point-n-click

I'm a 19 year old male. All I can see is her behind, and that's all I choose to care about :p

But, it's not a great shot. As you pointed out, the subject isn't what stands out...Apart from her behind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭joolsveer

Because she is in the foreground and dead centre. If she isn't the subject you've composed your picture wrong.

You said a couple of times something along the lines of "more shots from the general area" but I'm not so sure. The red helicopter is French as are the ambulances in the shot, some of the other buildings look very French too. Are you wandering between Montpelier Hill and Montpelier just to confuse us?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 650 ✭✭✭EireRoadUser

Jools ,sorry if I'm being rude ,but could you post 3 or 4 of your favourite modern architecture photo's ,the ones of glass that I have seen of yours I like a lot.
    Again ,sorry if I offend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,370 ✭✭✭Fionn

the broken Richie Kavanagh CD appeals to me for some reason I dunno why and I'd agree somewhat with Zakrze, Jool certainly enjoys taking all those pics. I know sweet FA about doing photography, still i know what i like, maybe that might not be to everyone's taste but what harm! some of his pics don't interest me at all others do! for instance the tracks one is good, i suppose coz it's got perspective, vanishing point, leading your gaze into the photograph. The water reflection shot of D 15 building is very nice

Would the scowling youths on the bridge have been much better subjects than the two women taking photos?
in the close up shot of 'Spring has Sprung' it seems to me as though theres something amiss with the focus, is it that theres sort of several degrees of focus going on here?

as for miss minger photo - the rest of the pic seems to lose detail for some reason and all the focus seems to be on her, i'd like the fishnets even more if she was cropped in close!!

i have a question about the young footballers photo no 10 in red extreme left theres a dark halo sort of effect along his arm same for the lad on the right no 5 at his elbow, is this chromatic abberation or fringing or whatever it's called, how can it be reduced? i'd like to see what the picture would be like from the other side, the expressions on their faces would be interesting. i presume it's difficult to get good shots of activities such as this because of the fast pace.

anyhow it's good for anyone trying to improve to see other people's efforts and comments and such!

    peace

This thread is a gem! Great stuff jools. You are certainly having a dig at some of the dogmatic arty farty rules are rules are not rules dumping that has been going on. Maybe it's because we were born in the same year that I appreciate your effort to get rid of some of the pompous prattle. jools for Presodent I say!!!

Some of your photos are technically and compositionally good according to the mythical book some are not. That's not the point though, is it? It's what they mean to you and what they will say to others in 40 years time that makes them worthwhile.

They are as valid as anybody elses in my view. As I've said before I don't like a lot of the stuff I take but others do so it's all very subjective. I will accept, though that there is such a thing as bad pics but yours dont fall into that catagory.

Or am I missing the point too :p
