Self-conscious (embarassed) of body - any chance you could help me out?

    Hey, well some of this may look more at home P.I. but I'm sure you understand why I'm putting it here.

    I'll set the scene - I'm nearly 18, in 5th year, generally confident and have a keen interest in sport. I weigh from 9 3/4 stone - 10 1/2 stone depending on which scales I use (they seem to vary) and am around 5'10''/5'11''. I eat decent meals (generally cereal in the morning - corn flakes/cruncy nut, small snack in the afternoon - pasta/noodles, and usually a good dinner like steak and chips or pork chops etc)

    And this is why I created a new account to post this:

    I'm quite skinny, skinny ankles which I am ashamed of but a bit of muscle on my calves. My arms are pretty pathetic and dont like wearing t-shirts in public. No pecs but an alright stomach. The ass is just about there but not really noticable when wearing jocks. I'm embarassed to take off my shirt which has lead to me not going swimming and even though I want it, why I dont go further and have sex with a girl. (TMI?)

    I guess I'm just unlucky, my chest aint completely flat and the upper part is somewhat bigger than the lower part, which I suppose is good and a sign of my activeness in sport, but even compared to people with a similar physique, Im not the best looking body wise.

    I tend to wair two pairs of football socks when I play rugby or something, which kind of makes my legs seem bigger, but my ankles are noticeably skinny.

    I play mostly football and Im quite fast, fit when I train/play regularly and enjoy sport. Want to take up rugby at some stage as I like playing casually and am getting well into it. Excuse me for being a bit arrogant here but I'm quite good-looking and get on alright with birds - but always think my body is letting me down, which it is.

    There's my life story anyway.

    My goals I have are:

    By September (start of 6th year)

    * Weigh 12 stone.
    * Have a reasonably toned body and good arms.
    * Legs that I wouldnt mind wearing shorts with (more on this later)
    * Noticeable arse!

    By December - March 07.

    * Weigh 13+ stone
    * Big enough arms and stong chest/good pecs.
    * Legs you could wear football socks with and look good.
    * Nice arse.

    Will add more if it comes to me. Now with regards legs; they've always seemed to me to be the hardest part of the body to add muscle to, especially the ankles, would I be right in assuming that?

    Now here's where I was hoping you guys could help me. Could you recommend a diet and possible workout that could help me achieve what I want? I know you're probably thinking I'm just lazy not going to the gym and getting an instructor to help me but from what I've heard from my mates they dont really give a sh!t and just give ya some ready-made thing. I'm very self conscious at the moment and want to go to college with a good body that I can show up (egotistic maybe, but it's what I want).

    If you could, please give me as much info as possible regarding workout plans/diet, this has taken me a bit of time to write and I'm not feeling great about myself these days.

    Thanks,
    Harry.

    Typical teenager!
    Always worried about how they look :rolleyes:
    LOL at the nice arse bit!
    Dude don't be worrying about your natural physical looks. When the right woman comes along it'll be the last thing on her mind!

    I was afraid that's what people would think I mean. Its not. Im embarassed to have a body like this when my mates are all quite big and athletic. Its about rugby as well, I want to be big so I can play that and be comfortable with myself. Its not the women - I know what you mean, I just mentioned it as it was a factor.

    People who go to the gym and bodybuilders dont just do it for women do they? They do it for themselves and thats what I want to do, as well as it meaning I'll be more confident with women.

    Have a look at *this*.

    Squat like a mother-f**ker and eat like a horse (but with more appropriate foods, review your diet. 6 meals a day, 3 big, 3 healthy snacks).

    Nothing wrong with wanting to improve your physical appearence, I know what it's like to be the skinny s**t with twigs for legs!

    well, truth is... that's what we tell other people :o I'd be lying if I said that how the opposite sex percieves us isn't a driving force in working out, but that's an ok thing!! but you're right, mostly we do it for ourselves, to push ourselves to the limits, to see how far we can go. There's loooads of guys out there wanting hte same thing you do, just as there's plenty of people who want to lose the weight. Both can be as difficult as the other, but with hard work and determination its very achievable.

    First off I should direct you to the stickies a the top of the forum page. There's oodles of good info in there about the right way to work out, how to plan your diet, and do a search of the board as well. Essentially we give people the same guidelines- our bodies all work relatively the same way at the end of the day, so once you follow the basics you can tweak your diet and program to suit your needs.

    The really good news is that at your age the huge amounts of growth hormone floating around your system will make it easier for you to gain mass with a good strength program.

    The bad news is, your diet will stop you getting there...

    crunchy nut is like eating a bowl of sugar, and corn flakes aren't far off. Porridge is best, or wholemeal toast, and some fruit. Is the snack your lunch?? if so it should be really substantial, and wholemeal pasta, bread or rice, never white. steak is fine, if its lean, drop the chips, where's the veg? This is all covered in teh stickies but very briefly: swap any white for brown where possible, eat 5-6 times a day, eat a lot (if its good), eat lots of protein (to help build muscles), get a good workout program and stick to it...

    but the best thing to do? and I'm really not being flippant here... read, and read a lot!!! educate yourself on what the best way to eat is, there's a huge amount of info here and across the net. some of the better bodybuilding sites include t-nation.com, bodybuilding.com, and some of us here have a lifting forum where we talk about training and diet, just click the link in my sig.

    I was only poking a bit of fun. I too suffered as one skinny long teenager! I hit 19 and blew out! And that was without training. I went from being a 6ft 2" 11 stone pole to 17 stone over the course of a few years!

    Im now down to 85kgs and more comfortable!

    The guys and gals above know their stuff so listen to them!

    I was eactly the same EXACTLY! I still am, I have a bit of definition now thats the only difference. Im 20 and I was the same at your age hated wearing T-shirts never took top off etc. All you can do is eat bit more try 6meals a day its hard to get into it try setting reminders on phone or something. I found push-ups great along with some other exercises. And with the ladies thing as it was said up there the right one wont care as I found out a few months back. I know its tough but try not to think of it as being a big deal cause its not really, as long as your healthy! Im always trying to put on more weight, and I find it very hard. Im not sure now about this but maybe setting your goal a little lower and maybe stretch it out more cause dont know if putting on 2-3stones in a reasonably short time is a good idea. Saying that im not 100%. Well best of luck and if you find a routine that works (pass it on!) keep it up!

    First off ditch the goals to be a certain weight, instead have a goal to look a specific way. Other then that you will end up just putting on weight for the sake of it and not having it just be muscle.
    I am not going to go near the diet as other have covered it (i.e. your's isn't great and the stickies have lots of info)
    Start going to the gym and doing weights, If you do want to gain an extra third of your body weight in muscle this is going to be where it is going to be done. If you are goign to play rugby leg and core work are your best bet. So lots of squats, deadlifts glute ham raises etc. also spinning and sprint work are great extras to help with cardio.

    dude im very confused to your auctual goal! im big in to rugby and train specifically for it! what osition is it? i can get you a rugy training rogramme for building power strength etc...whcih is more suited to rugby but the bit of weight in rugby is essential! and that dosent always look to good! im a prop and in season i was 14 and a half stone at one stage this is huge comared with me now im only 12 4 or so! i needed weight im a prop! waist went from the 30 inches it is now to 35 inches! like dude do you want to look realy good or be good? youll have to make a choice!(unless your like a winger lucky bastards get both ;) ) i know this isnt comletly accurate and there are excetions but in rugby the bit of weight is handy! momentum matters alot to making a tackle and breaking one!
    dont be obsessed with getting "the six" or crap like that! and a rugby power based routine will give you bigger arms etc...
    oh and i dont know why so obsessed with les but since you are you play rugby! shouldnt you be squatting every chance you get? i cant think of any better exercise for legs then squatting! builds huge mass and can up your sprint nd helps hugely in the field! watch the irish team there legs are huge! and i saw the NZ and wales team u close they are even bigger! squat!!!!! they were squatting loads! and with big amounts! thats why they have such big legs!

    dude, seriously, you're young yet, give yourself time. i don't think i even knew who i was until i was about 21, try not to stress about image. easier said than done i know...but that's the best advise i can give!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,285 ✭✭✭Smellyirishman

    I agree that you should feel comfortable, even with what you have now (I know it's annoying being the skinny one, but better than the oposite end of the scale imo). However, if you want to improve your image (and indeed your entire lifestyle, because that is what real success will require) there is no better time than today, will save any "If only I started doing this X weeks/months/years ago" feelings and at your age you have more growth to do so it will be even more beneficial.

    If you want to get big you have to eat big, chicken,tuna,pasta,eggs,oats,steak,rice,bread you should be eating at least 5 big meals a day if you want to make serouis gains, drink lots of milk, if your having trouble getting all the protein you need into you why not try going on a protein supplement, don't drink alcohol, lift big, rest and get sufficient sleep

    To be honest, right now your in a perfect place to build some mass. You will have more test floating around you than you need and will pretty much be anabolic all day!

    Get your diet together and learn the big compound lifts and you will be fine.

    Small joints will only be an advantage when you add some mass as it will simply make your muscles appear bigger.

    Remember, look at the positives as well as the negatives.
