If this is the same company that did one of these in the Stillorgan park hotel a couple of months ago, AVOID IT.
    Total scam.

My father in law bought a camera at one of these or similar where the camera was a Nikonn for about €75. I had warned him before going and I couldn't bring myself to telling him when I saw the "camera". I have also heard of empty boxes in others.

How exactly does the scam operate? Is it a load of stolen gear?

As I understand, this is a kind of auction.

    It works as follows:
    - Top brand items are advertised at too good to be true prices, under the guise of liquidation stock, or something similar. These prices are 1/4 of the standard retail price.

    - They have a very limited number of these items and should you attend, it seems that they are sold to insiders. So they might have on Ps2 for 60 euros.... but not 50. Having tried to get such items in UK based auctions before, it seems the auction just wasn't conducted fairly.

    - Brand name items, with max quantities of 1 or 2 are sold at ridiculous prices (seemingly to people who work for the company) initially, which gets everyone excited and in a buying state of mind. Then they use this to sell unknown items at significant prices, that do not seem to be good value upon closer inspection. Some people travel far and wide to get there, and thus don't want to go home empty handed.

If it's such an auction; my advice, don't waste your time... master ebay instead.

There used to be a English guy on the North Main St. in Cork about 6/7 years ago, first he used to give away free stuff (like blank tapes and cigarette lighters), then he went on to put stuff into a black refuse bag (CD players and whatever), and auction the black bag of stuff. People went mad for it, and he seems to stay around for about 3 months at a time.

Then again we are the official home of the pyramid scheme :)

The "Nikonn" cameras sound like they were brought in from the Canaries. I bet they have "mx-jvc" and "penta" ones too. (That said you can get fantastic value on proper cameras over there if you know your stuff, and enjoy wasting your holiday looking at cameras in between drinking cheap beer...)

Don't listen, if you have never been go to one. Just bring €0 in you pocket.
Its a hoot to watch this scam, a real life experience.

All above is very true. But its a great example of mass psychological selling practices (albeit shady). The atmosphere generated really works for the sellers.

    Caveat Emptor and enjoy

Definately! You are probably just as likely to get ripped off in Brown Thomas anyway! :)

i was there 4 ,3 hours, its not a scam in my opinion, example, mostly ,electrical goods, eg stereo mini hifi dvd system, 100euro, everything, was new in,box, and some demo models, tvs, they had notes, with list of items, company name ,email adress, fax, telephone no, he might say i have 12 stereos, thats the price, first 12 people,to put your hand up gets 1,simple, basically most items,were,1/3 retail price plust 21percent vat.it was cheaper than power city, i think they have sales in dublin once a year, ill email them later.i wud have bought a pc ,or ps2 but ,i didnt feel like waiting round town till 7,or 8 pmfor a ps2 to come up,they get end of line stock,or stock in a damaged box.eg they had 3 pack cordless phones/3 50euro for the set, with charger baseunit. they had 1 lcd screen went for half price.

This is the lad who always writes in the Computer forum and everything he says gets torn to shreds.

I was at one of these things before.
It isn't a scam as such, it's more of an opportunity to rid gullible people into parting with their cash for 'end of line' gear. But there wasn't any lies spoken at the one I was at.
Twas gas craic all the same.

The stuff in general, is junk, but so many people buy things on impulse with no researching that they 'believe' they're getting a good deal. And so if they believe they are...

And along the same line we could say that the majority of people who buy stuff in high street stores are scammed daily, this is not much worse really.

What amazes me is people buy things like LCD tv's or expensive hifi's and then wonder where to go when it stops working?

i don,t think its a scam ,because prices are 1third retail price ,but i would not buy a tv there ,or stereo cos they only had 3 tv models, 3 types of stereos, 1 lcd with speakers 32inch, sold for 1000euro.If you want a full choice or gaurantee, you can always buy from DID electric,or power city,he gave full specs/info of all the electronic items there, there were 28inch widescreen tvs crt type, going for 230euro approx. If i thought it was a scam i would not have posted it on boards.ie. I,d prefer to buy tv from discount electric, then i can choose the exact spec i want, with a gaurantee ,or even buy 1 from boards/for sale.he,d say the price in retail, is 200, say, price here is 80,no one is forced to buy anything.

It doesn't matter whether you think it's a scam or not when it's quite well known that it is. Oh, and you should take some tips from Mr. Period. ;)

Please gamer, whether it is a scam or not, try and use commas and paragraphs. Capital letters and apostrophies also help.
