I'm sorry, but what is the point of this thread? I mean, anybody can go to eBay, type in T-Maxx/Revo/Savage or whatever in the search box and then post a link to it on this forum.

I have no interest in ebay's offerings either.

I am so used to hearing "I got it on ebay for a great price, didn't think it would break." Followed by one of the comments below: (take your pick)......

1 I got the spare part from ebay yesterday but it won't fit.....
2 Now it won't start - can you help me....
3 I don't want to wait for another delivery ... have you got the bit I need....
4 The part was 5 dollars but the postage was 15 dollars.......
5 Why don't you have parts for the make I bought in China?
6 It is still stuck in customs.......
7 I'd better order six of that part in case it breaks again....
8 The club guys won't let me use it, they say my radio isn't safe......
    and also the extremely idiotic.....
9 I can't figure out why my one doesn't go as well as yours, they look the same.....

We all go through a mail order phase, then we learn the true cost of problems in models, and wrong parts purchased. Ebay is just an extremely long distance mail order learning phase.

I'm just not in that advanced beginner phase any more so for me ebay has no attractions .

But I do understand the magnetic appeal it has for some....they come to me for help all the time and can't stop telling me how wonderful it is .....

    Well
    answer to number
    1) same as going into a shop really. buy the wrong part and it wont fit..
    2) fiddle with it and get it going.. everyone has to do it.
    3) Dont order if you cant wait..
    4) Imagine what it would cost in this country over the counter..!!
    5) Simple.. Dont buy anything from China.
    6)Same as 5
    7) Can never have enough of parts that are prone to breaking.
    8) Dont buy with the wrong radio gear.;)

I am not trying to condemn your feelings towards Ebay.. but to be honest.. with a little care and attention i think it is near impossible to beat it for value..
I have bought several hundreds of items from there and never had a problem wirth moaning about. :D

not much of a shop if that happens, treat it like ebay and don't go back again....
    vectra wrote:

If someone shows you how - you get "over the hump" several hundred $$$ better off. eg 3 broken pullstarts costs but is just one thing that advice allows you to never break in the first place...
    vectra wrote:

    agreed 100%
    vectra wrote:

Remember ... those mailorder shops are just ordinary shops somewhere else....
    vectra wrote:

    Wise advice in this context.
    vectra wrote:

What if breaking the same part twice may be a sign you don't know how not to break it. Maybe it is just a sign you bought the wrong model for your partuicular type of use .... Depends on the part ;)
    vectra wrote:

Hold on now .... we both know beginners in RC haven't a clue, and the internet ( ebay-type sales pitch "it's easy to fly helis-start cars etc" bull---) is hardly suitable advice, is it?
    vectra wrote:

I reckon that is because you are experienced and know the pitfalls .... enter the average beginner, who is not you. Overseas sales guys go to town on such people.

But I suspect you read my answer before I finished adding the last bit in an edit. I am not all religious (good vs evil !) on this. So my reply isn't a personal attack on ebay, more a description of the problems I get asked to solve (for free) every day.

We all get what we want from RC, and if the ebay buying ritual is good for you ... searching web, waiting for it to arrive, and all .... then it is a satisfying way for you. (Not me tho. :) )
We have different satisfying ways to suit our own requirements:
Some guys want the cheapest stuff so they feel good about their buying.
Some guys want the most expensive stuff so they can feel good about their buying.
    Some like ebay.
Some buy secondhand so they get even better bargains.
Some like catalogues, and waiting for parcels...
Some only buy while abroad on holidays and cart it home on airplanes.
Some buy broken stuff cos they want to be fixing it to be happy.
Some hang about the club to buy the winner's castoffs, cos they think that will make them a "winner" too. (Just guarantees second place IMHO !)
I think these are all stages on the RC learning curve.....

I'm on my pwn learning curve too. Saving takes me time. Fixing takes me time. Buying isn't exciting for me any more. Planning new models is exciting. I like setting up/building/running a new type of model. I hate buying parts - it makes me suspect I got the wrong model, or something is wrong with it, or I'm doing something wrong. And oh yeah - I'm a sucker for fast stuff!
So .... me, I want my models to go great, so I can keep using them, troublefree, and begin into my next model. That way I end up with lots of models, all going ok.

There is room for everyone in this great hobby :)

    Simply put:

    Ebay-cheap, no refunds, no knowledge.

LHS-dear, you get good knowledge, refunds.

If I were starting I,d go for the LHS (or tower), experienced go for ebay, LHS, tower.
    Take your pick:)

    Hi Plug
Pick n mix according to what you need. Dead on.

(BTW Plug: I was looking at 2 gliders in KKY yesterday ! Full size ones !)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,324 ✭✭✭tallus

I think we all pick and mix anyways.
I have never used ebay but I do find the posts interesting.
In the past year I have bought three models from Local hobby shops and as many online. I do think it's nice that people have the choice, and lets be honest... nobody is getting their arm twisted to buy from ebay either.
    *edit*
The Ebay items are under time constraints too (my 2 cents)

    Exactly My Point ;)

Initially when i happened on this section of Boards.ie I noticed some people looking to buy rc kits at "Bargain prices"
I for one cannot work as I injured my back years ago in an accident. So I really dont have much else to do only try to help people to get into this hobby as cheaply as possible.

I did NOT ask to have these posts made into a sticky.
Fobia thought it would be a good idea to have it made a sticky for everyones convenience.
Like I said.. I only posted the ones that I personally would buy as to be of assistance to others but from the responce this thread has got it looks more like I was offending people so maybe I should just not bother spending endless hours looking for bargains for ye and spend more time bitching about everyone elses posts. ;)
Start having a bit of fun as such

So, I guess the best thing is let you guys have fun buying wherever you all want to part with your hard earned cash.

Thanks for all the gratitude anyway.:D

I look on them that way too - generally speaking - not interested - sometimes - go to the link and look at the pictures to see how the rest of the world is doing it .... just in case I'm missing out, like.. :D

I think those time limits are childish. However, if that is what you want ......

Hi Vectra- don't go and get a thin skin on us now! We value your contributions. :)

I'm not big into ebay like I said, but I think Fobia is right. It makes sense to keep them together, they're similar, and will fit in a special thread well IMHO.
    vectra wrote:

I think it's more a cut and thrust kind of banter, rather than anyone "getting at you". I have noticed (from reading my own posts) that in print, at strong viewpoint can easily come across as hostile, when if you read it again, it's not really intended as such.

Based on my experience, you can talk to folks until you're blue in the face. Most of the time, they will do what they were going to do, regardless. :p
Why bother? It's the odd occasion when someone takes what you say to heart, cos then you feel it's all worth it! :)

My first time to see the place, actually.

My point about the time constraints was hinting at the fact that in a shop you cannot be outbid, and unless someone happens to be looking at the same model, you can take your time buying it, even put a deposit on it.
