OK I know theres already a Sopranos thread but the people on there are already talking about episode 5 of the new series:eek: Im sure theres still a few people who dont download it and follow it on Rte and instead of "walking around on eggshells" worrying youll stumble upon a massive spoiler (or curiosity will get the better of you;) ) I thought it might be a good idea to discuss it here as well.

Anyway I jus cant believe that 60 odd episodes later the sopranos can continue to deliver television of that quality. It was absolutely class. Im a massive fan and I was looking so forward to this and theres always a chance that its gonna be a let down, but not the sopranos. By far the best thing on television. Ill truly be sad to see it go. SO what did everyone else think of the first episode?

one more thing. Theres a battlestar galactica forum, a star trak forum, a red dwarf forum, a 24 forum and a lost forum ffs:eek: Im just noticing this now. Why no Sopranos forum.

I had no idea it started back last night!!!  Is it repeated again before the next episode?

What does that mean? Red dwarf is finished years and it has a forum. People arent gonna forget the sopranos when it ends. Its one of the greatest television shows ever.

Yea very lil promotion of the start of it on RTE 2. In fact they showed a trailer for it AFTER the first episode. Someone in RTE dropped the ball on that.

No idea about repeats. Maybe late on the weekend?

I thought last nights episode was great, so much happened in it. Lets hope it doesn't slow down too much.
BTW how do I mark spoilers?

That was a trailer for next week's episode, and they had been showing trailers for about a week before it started last night.

    Absolute flawless television.

Ah its a very good show, but I still think its overrated, don't think its brilliant or flawless. I actually prefer a lot of other HBO shows-The Wire,Deadwood,Carnivale.

It may be a bit over-hyped and its certainly not perfect. Speaking as a middle-aged man, Tony's mid-life crisis is something I can relate to and there arent many other TV shows that deal with this. What I particularly like about the Sopranos is that it works really well on a number of different levels - crime /action /humour / power and corruption/ wife and kids / ageing parents / mid-life crisis/ Tony's psychoanalysis etc

After watching last nights episode, I really regretted not following the series after season 3. Will hopefully get my hands on the rest of the seasons dvds to catch up some time soon.

He was first seen in the third series as part of Ralphies crew. When Ralphie got whacked and Fat Guy (Vito, I think) got made captain he also moved up a place. Hes second to Vito in that crew now as far as i can see.

As for the episode not the best not the worst. A lot of changes since the last season they had to show I suppose so that slowed it down a little at the start. Still great to have it back a mediocre sopranos is better than 99.99% of the other stuff out their.

Massive shock I didn't they'd do that this early in the series even if its not a fatal wound.

Agreed, it was a huge shock. Really shook things up and left you dying for next weeks show:D Also the florida guy thing spoiler warning was pretty shocking. I thought they would have developed that story more.

IIRC he glassed the guy in the last series on the building site, after he made fun of his bird on the side (his wifes grand lookin for her age :) ). I thought the bit showing him ratting was odd, as before he met the feds there was no indication he was ratting. Surely there shouldve been some type of build up, maybe being forced into it after his junkie son was caught with a load of gear or something.

The opening to the episode was very weird, showing an awful lot of bit- part characters who you couldnt even remember had been in the show.

Did anyone else think showing Tony digging at the start was meant to have you think for a second that he was digging up Adrianas body, seeing as she is buried somewhere around the land Carmela bought for development last series?

Very good episode I thought, it had the twists, the violence, the humour

"Ever think it was ironic that Lou Gehrig died of Lou Gehrigs disease?" :D

I agree, I was very surprised by this. It seemed kinda sloppy, like he wouldnt do what he did just because his son was taking heroine and he couldnt go to florida so they threw that in too give it an extra bit if credibility. Although it also illustrates how riddled the gang is with rats and shows you never quite know whos a rat and whos not, even more so now.

I guess they did that because those characters are gonna be more prominent in this series. Again it was kinda weird(and what strange music). I hope sil and esp pauly dont go too much into the background. Their by far the best characters in it imo and they werent in it enough last season. The omission of them from the opening sequence suggests they wont play a big part in this series either:(

    Odd indeed.

    Its great that its back.

Also, Vito Spattori "You never know, I might be head of this family in a few years" - No chance!!

Wow didn't think of that certainly hope your wrong, Paulie is the funniest character in the show and Sil is just great.

Lol, that was classic. Hes really funny now with his "can-do" attitude cause he lost the weight, but if they overdo it it could become annoying.

Did anyone else find the cameraswings a bit dodgy last week?

Just curious, why do you not think its that good? Have you followed it from the beginning. I remember my mates used to rave about it and I used to watch the odd episode and couldnt get what they saw in it at all. Then I got a loan of the boxset and followed it from the start and now Im a huge fan. I think what makes a good tv drama is the characters and the characters in the sopranos are the sort that youll remember for ever:). Of course maybe you have followed it and just dont think its all that which is fair enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Dont think people were saying its not good, just thats its not as good as its made out to be sometimes.I enjoy watching it.Its not the greatest thing since slice pan, just one of the best American tv exports at the moment (even if last season was ****e)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭elurhs

I actually think S5 was an improvement over S4 and wouldn't describe either of them as ****e! When you see programmes like Lost, big ratings winners, The Sopranos is much better written, acted and produced. I enjoy Lost as much as the next person, but dramatically Sopranos are still out in front.

Tony getting shot will lead to a power struggle between Sil and Paulie for temporary command of the family. Sil would win any tactical battle, but Paulie's sheer ferocity could get him there in the short term.

    Hi,
Does anyone know what the song is that was used to advertise last nights episode of the sopranos on rte all last week?
I think last night's episode was good but i think it was building up to something much better next week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭elurhs

Don't know what the song was, but I thought it was cool. As for last nights episode, it was an odd one. Possibly the oddest ever. I just felt the whole dream/vision of Tony's was overdone. Weird though to see Gandolfini not playing Tony as Tony.

The behaviour of the crew was very interesting, with everyone jockeying for position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 741 ✭✭✭Chumpski

Good to see Tonys kids getting some important storylines. Meadow and her Fiance will have trouble with Vito this year after him being "caught in the act" last year. As for the guy who plays AJ. That was some performance in last nights episode. If he does what he said he would, Tony will go ape.

You know when Tony is on the phone to his wife and kids in the dream/coma? Did anyone else think the wife sounded alot like Gloria. Tonys Goomar in season 3. The mercedes sales rep who committed suicide?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,178 ✭✭✭kevmy

Yeah it was defo an odd one the only other episode i can compare it to was the one where they whacked Pussy and Tony was having weird dreams/flashbacks all through it. Anyone else think that Gandolfini has it in his contract to get a certain screentime every episode cos that the only reason that i can think of to have so much dreaming in it.
The best bits were with the guys looking to position themselves just in case tony doesn't pull through.

Pauli "i'm going to send over a stereo for his room"
Chris "he doesn't need a stereo"
    next scene
Carmela "look at the new stereo chris sent over":) :) priceless

Defo didn't sound like Carmela anyway and the kids seemed younger on the phone too. I thought it was supposed to be Tony listening to them talking around him in the room with all that when are you coming home stuff.

I don't know, maybe he does but the dream was worthwhile seeing. It had some insight into Tonys mid life crisis, fear of death or losing his family which has been a major reason for Tony acting the way he does throughout the series.

I don't know, i like these episodes with dreams anyway. A favourite of mine would be the test dream from the end of series 5.

I think last night's episode was good but i think it was building up to something much better next week

The song was called "Happy Phantom" by Tori Amos.

Last night's episode was really good. I can't believe that it's still great after all these years!

I loved the song at the end, Moby - "When it's cold i'd like to die"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 313 ✭✭Ho-Hum

I didn't think last nights episode was as good, I think the dream epsiodes are kind of boring. While they do provide some insight into whats going on in Tonys head I think they over do it a bit.
Looks like they really are building up to something big, especially with AJ.

Yeah, after the funeral of the guy who hung himself, they were saying, maybe he had cancer or something as a reason for his doing it and Vito said, "maybe he was a homosexual and felt there was no-one he could talk to" took me a minute to remember his being "caught in the act" last season!

I can see why people didn't think it was great, i told 2 people to watch last nite who'd never seen it before, and frankly they were wondering what all the fuss was about, but i do think it's building up to something great though.

Thanks for telling me the name of the song, i'll try and find somewhere to download it

It was one of those classic episodes where youd tune in for the first time after hearing all the hype and just say wtf ,why do people think this is great. But I thought it was a brilliant episode. As for people saying it was very odd, it was the same idea as the episode "test dream" in series 5 as chumpski said. I think its nice to have the rare episode like that as it keeps it fresh and interesting and it gives a deeper insight into tony's character. The voice on the phone I think was Charmane Bucco. In an earlier episode she tells carmella she had a thing with tony but she choose Arti presumably because she was against tonys career choice. This was showing tony if he didnt follow a life of crime so it makes sense. What a show though, the way it takes such a dramatic idea and manages to throw in those classic moments of comic relief just at the right time. Paulie to AJ "ok c'mon Van Helsing" lmao:D

Yeah youre right there i knew the voice was familiar. Its great the way theres throw backs to the early series. In series 1, Tony talks to Dr. Melfi wondering what life would be like if he became a patio sales man in San Diego. In the dream last night, at the bar the group of people ask Tony how he went from selling patios to be as successful as he is today.

Thats why you really have to follow the sopranos right through to get the most out of it. Also in the episode "college" in the first series Tony tells meadow "maybe being a rebel in my family would mean selling patio furniture on route 22". And in the episode last night the women says to him "how do you go from selling patio furniture to fibre optics".:)

Yeah. I bought all 5 series there last October. They were going for 50 EUR per set then. They were well worth it though. I keep watching them over and over. The humour especially Sil and Paulie are one of the best things about the show.
