Of course some of them are true, with a population of around 1,000,000 you'd be more 'sad', as you put it, if they weren't true.

Chin up though old dear, keep the home fires burin'.

I hate people who not only obviously forward chain mail to everyone in their contacts list, but then also deem it necessary to post it on a message board for people who may not be on their contacts list...

Come to think of it i dont think i've ever sen anybody on the northside wearing burberry.Thats a stereotype that they forgot to change when it was amended from "Essex" to Northside of Dublin.Am i also to infer that once you cross the liffey you'll see no evidence of antisocial behaviour, bad parenting, intemperate habits, predictable dress sense or regional idiom. They presumably ALL dress like Dermot Galvin and speak like a 98 FM presenter..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,130 ✭✭✭✭Kiera

Even the air is bad over here on the Northside. Thats how badass we are!

Ah, you mean the colonies of the South Side?

hee hee, I prefer the term "pioneer outpost" myself. These people must consider themselves adventurers, living on the edge and hoping to tame the Wild North(side). :):D

On a slightly different note, I'm originally from Lucan, in the sticks of Dublin ;) or West Dublin so why is it that RTE etc. keep describing Finglas gangs as "West Dublin crime gangs"? It's the northside!! Clondalkin and Ballyfermot gangs are westside. Of course, Lucan is paradise and there is no crime whatsoever (switch to rose-tinted glasses mode Lieutentant!)

Must be because some well known RTE types actually live in places like Howth and Malahide, on the Northside!!

Yes but the "westies" are from Blanch and thats in the west.

Hee hee, and for six months after!

Kiera, yep that's right but Blanch is also classed as West Dublin, as is Clonsilla so 'Westies' is a legitimate title but a Finglas gang described as "West Dublin", why not "North Dublin"?

Just wondering because you would swear listening to the news reports that North and South Dublin only had scangers and snobs respectively whereas West Dublin has all the crime gangs!

Finglas is North West Dublin so either term can be applied. When people speak of North Dublin, they usually mean Ballymun, Whitehall and out as far as Swords.

No they dont they mean anywhere on the northside of the river liffey. If you live in finglas you dont say you're from north west dublin, you say you're from north dublin.Likewise Fairview,Clontarf,Raheny,Drumcondra,Cabra,Phibsboro,Killester,Artane,Marino,Donnycarney, coolock,Beaumont,Santry,North Strand,East Wall,Ballybough. All on the northside and refered to as such.

not it's not, parts of finglas are as far east as ballymun.
in general, inside m50 = north dublin, outside you can start talking about west side..

indeed. people don't realise finglas is a fairly large area, usually split in two (by the m50)... the east and west. west side of finglas is where the council estates and news crews are, and the east side touches on ballymun at one part and glasnevin on the other part.

i'm on the "glasnevin part" in a cul de sac, where apparently, my neighbours don't even live in finglas

    Nightwish wrote:

Ah, I see, so if west Finglas is on the other side of the M50 it is West Dublin and not North Dublin? I wonder how many west Finglas people would say they are from West Dublin and not the Northside???

Not many me thinks and to get back to my off-topic point (sorry OP and mods!) shouldn't the journos refer to these Finglas gangs as West Finglas or Northside gangs rather than West Dublin?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 16,397 ✭✭✭✭Degsy

Nah,its nt the m50 that devides finglas its the N1(north road). In actual fact you've got yer West(which is where i live),then west of that you've got the South(where most of the trouble stems from, particularly an estate called Berryfield). Also you've got a little known area called the north which has Dunsoghly estate allthough technicaly its part of The West.Cross the N1 and head east and finglas quickly finds itself becoming glasnevin, amazing really..what used to be known as ballymun avenue is now known as glasnevin avenue and house prices have gone up accordingly.
