I havent exercised in about a year! Since I left college last May! Now I wanna get fit again. And am thinking of going for daily runs. What distances would ye recommend? And is there a problem with running on the road (somebody told me before this was very bad for your knees and that you should run on grass!)

you should start off with 2 miles, prob 2 times a week for about 2/3 weeks and then 3 times a week... and then add an extra mile after another 2 weeks and then just keep it up and you should see ur fitness improve fairly quickly... running on the road is more impact than on grass, ive had a fair few injuries of late and physio has me doing exercises where i close my eyes and stand on one foot with my arms out straight... helps build the joints up, no real harm in running on the road i wouldnt think as long as its not over done...

Post your height, weight and general level of fitness.
Hard to give advice if we dont know where you are starting from.

You could try a run-walk programme.
My wife did the attached programme last year and it worked well for her. She could focus on the next walk break instead dreading the whole workout.

    Follow a 5k plan - http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Follow that and you'll be good for running 3mile without any problems in 8-10 weeks.

It's hard to start but onmce you get the miles in the legs, you'll be fine, post back here if you need advice.

does running on roads not increase the chance of shin splints. i suffer from this and was told to stay off road running.i hate running on the thread mile. i give up too easy and dont think thread mill is much better for shins.

I had shin splints basically because I hadn't run in 6 years and wore the wonrg runners. Threadmill is lower impact for sure, the shin splints will go away after a while though.

i stopped running on roads and thread mills about 6 months ago and do other cardio (bike, rower etc). and i wear those special orthopedic soles in my runners now. when i long enough to wait to start runnin on roads or is it just a matter of checkin if it still hurts ?
