I asked in my local chippy for it and i was given a look of amazement and shock!
Here is the wiki on it.

I presume you're talking about what I know of as a "battered mars"... a mars bar covered in chipper-batter and deep fried. Delicious, even if you can feel every your artery begin to implode!

Used to be able to get them done in the Seashell chipper at the end of Townsend Street. Not sure if it's still open even. Also, though I've only heard of this, they'd batter-and-fry a Magnum ice-cream for you - melted on the outside, frozen on the inside. How sick is that!

the chippers opposite the Ambassador on Parnell Square, Cinnelli's sell them. In Scotland, they were selling them in my local chippers, 4 years ago.

Ive never actually tried one! Are they nice?? Would they not make you really thirsty??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

They were invented in scotland, no?

Closest I've come is deep fried ice cream.
Mars is a dish best served cold...definitely enough crap in a mars without covering it in tempura and dipping it in boiling animal fat...

Why do they have to be mars bars, y cant they be snickers or a bounty or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭Hermione*

Ugh. IMO, they look and sound vile. Thast much saturated fat can't be good for you either!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Piste

Yum I think they sound heavenly, I'd like to try one some time, just the once, I wouldn't make it a regular habit. If you went into a regular chippers with a Mars bar would they do it?

Seashells is about 3 mins walk from Pearse St. DART station and has been the venue for many a feast after a session in Mahaffy's pub - battered Mars bar is €1.40 and they do Bounty, Curly Wurly, Snickers and the like as well. Fantastic onion rings and battered sausages too. Go there now!

Never had baked alaska? Same concept; the egg white in the tempura batter is a great insulator, so the heat of the oil doesn't transfer to the ice cream and melt it....plus it only gets dipped for like, 30 seconds. I think the mahs bah (for our Drogheda readers :D) is cooked for longer so it melts and goes all gooey....yum.

    Battered Crunchy.
It's just brilliant. The mars bars are alright, but crunchy's are just teh win tbh.

Wait..is it crunchy or crunchie? Haven't had one in ages..

Funny how people would happily eat a mars bar and something battered seperately, but put them together and suddenly it's soooo unhealthy. No wonder there's an obesity problem.

Normally I would agree with this maths but as someone who doesn't like mars bars but loves them deep fried I would have to differ.

The inside is gooey, and the outside crisp. tastes lovely with a little ice-cream.

and obviously it would be a very occasional treat, not an every day occurance.

My local chipper does them. I've never even thought of getting one until now but on the back of this thread was figuring 'what the hell' .... that was until I saw THAT pix! Looks like something someone vomited
