Hi folks. Once upon a time, (about 5 years ago) I was a pretty fit chappie. I was taking part in motorsport at the time so I had to be fit.

ATM I have more important things to spend money on than racing, but im tired of being unfit and not being involved in somthing competitive. I'm happy enough with my appearance though. Working out at the gym only really works for me if I have a goal, so I was thinking....

What about taking part in some runs?

Im wondering how long (roughly) it would take me to get up to the level of fitness needed to do such runs? Say for example, phoenix park? Would I be crazy to think I could take that on in a month?

I know I could walk em, but even for that I think working out wouldnt do any harm.
Long term, Id love to have a crack at the Iron Man in the states, but Id say im a LONG way away from that. I think id run out of breath just watching that one!

    Any comments or suggestions welcome.

You're right about having goals. Consider setting yourself a goal of doing a 5k run first.

    Sample Plan here - http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/5k.html

That more than likely seems easy, but the idea is to train to a level of fitness safely. 5k running at a jogging pace is roughly 25-30mins constant running.

I'm not sure of the distance for phoenix park.

Have to agree about the goals point made above, I always have a goal in mind with my training. Not sure when you talk of the phoenix park, as there are many races held there during the year from 5 mile to half marathon.

So I think it depends on what type of runs you want to do. Will you be training for speed in shorter runs such as 5 or 10k or do you want to build endurance for marathons?

The main thing I would say either way is get out there and starting running, start small and build up from there, a little extra each week and you be surprised how quickly you build it up. Best of luck with it.

You could also look into doing sprint tri and duathlons. If you are thinking of doing an ironman comp in the long term this would be a good place to start. If you look up the triathlon ireland website it will give you this years calendar and links to the organising clubs.
If you aren't a great swimmer at the mo the sprint duathlon would be the best place to start as it only involves running and cycling, it involves an extra run section instead of a swim section so it is run/cycle/run.
