Hmm... I want a 4x12 extention cab for my ENGL, must be 8ohms. Whats the best value cab out there, I can't afford an expensive cab (ENGL standard, Marshall 1960 etc) at the moment so I'm after a bang for the buck type cab. Heard good things about the Behringer 4x12 with Jensons.

    Budget is €300-400.

Hmmm.. What speakers are in it? I was half considering saving up and dropping 600 quid on a standard ENGL cab..

BTW can you delete the double thread post, something weird happened to the other one, i cant edit it

You know what, I haven't got a clue. If I get bored tomorrow I'll crack it open and find out for you.

the behringer ones are surprisingly good

What cab do i have? Nothing at the moment, just a Vintage 30 in the ENGL combo which I find very harsh and trebbly. Anyway, I was hoping to get a 4x12 first then perhaps sell the ENGL and get a nice rack setup or a Fireball

You'd get a brand new Ibanez 4x12 for that money, I gig with one every weekend, and I'm constantly delighted by it.

Well to be honest I'd prefer something a little more upmarket so to speak. I want it to hold its value, I've heard that Ibanez use cheap drivers/poor construction

You run a 6505 through it or do you have a Peavey cab? How does it compare to other cabs you've used?

Then you've heard wrong I'm afraid. I don't skimp on gear, I've a GT-Pro, Sennheiser Wireless, Mackie Power Amp, and I wanted a great 4x12 to go with it. The Ibanez is a little heavy, but that's the only downside. The construction is solid, I've had it on the road now 2 years, and it's still fine. I bought the angled cab and tb100h head for home use, and they're both great too.

This is the same Ibanez who make some of the world's greatest guitars. Sure, a Mesa Boogie would be a little better, but not a whole lot. At the end of the day, it's down to cabinet shaping and bits of paper being pushed in and out of magnets. Kinda difficult to screw that up, 4x12 design isn't rocket science. In fact, some of the worst I've seen on the road would be the Marshalls. I played with a lad using a JCM cab, and he constantly had to open the back of it and repair wiring. Not pleasant.

You find the Vintage 30 Harsh and trebbly? That's rather odd, are you sure it's the speaker? You better find that out before you possibly waste money on a fix that mightn't even work.

Anywho, if you find the V30 too trebbly, and it's not a problem with the amp or tubes, then I think I have just the thing for you. The Genz Benz G-Flex:

    gb_212gflex_lg.jpg

Supposedly these feckers sound absolutely huge, and the GBE 1240-V75 speakers are much more modern sounding than the Celestion V30s. I've heard a lot of great things about these cabs, and the sound ports at the bottom make for a much fuller bass response than a fully closed cab. Personally, I'd rather something a little more focused.

Have a look at the reviews here, and see what you think. Supposedly it's not uncommon to grab these cheap second hand on Ebay, so it should be well within your price range.

Yeah I find a Vintage 30 trebly, but then again I am using a SD custom custom in the bridge which might explain things, it's nothing an EQ cant solve anyway. Those Genz Benz cabs look interesting but i don't think i'd go down the ebay route, Has anyone used a standard ENGL 4x12? €599 most places, celestion v60's (supposedly dark sounding) but weigh in at a healthy 50kg

Hmm, yes that could explain things indeed. Why not try a DiMarzio Tone Zone or something before blaming the speaker?

And for that matter, why not go down the Ebay route? You are on a budget, are you not? Second hand seems the perfect thing to do if you want some quality on limited funds.

Nah im happy enough with the pickup and i want a 4x12 for bigger gigs, i plan to go rack at some stage anyway. And as for ebay, I have zero feedback...

If the pickup might be the problem, then why are you happy enough with it? What if you get another cab and have the exact same problem?

Have you considered using an EQ pedal to get rid of some of that harsh trebblyness you're complaining about?

You don't really need to have feedback, we all have to start somewhere really, you'd just usually need to message the seller beforehand. In the case of "Buy it now" ones, your feedback won't matter at all.

Anywho, I still reckon a Genz Benz cab might be the thing for you. I find that speaker cabinets matter a lot, and you don't want to be picking up a piece of **** cab now if you'll be upgrading to a rack setup, or head. But that's just my take.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

In fairness, I imagine a 4x12 being a bit of a curse if you're gigging around Dublin. Not many venues that you'd need that amount of speaker (although I admit I'm from the school of Maximum Volume Yields Maximum Results so I wouldn't be adverse to maybe two 4x15s and a mother****er of an amp). And if you're powering it from a combo you'll be doing a lot of lugging and awkward setting up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

The ENGL standard isnt a pos though, neither is a 1960B, Yeah i run a fish n chips EQ in the loop and it sounds fine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Yeah i run a fish n chips EQ in the loop and it sounds fine.

Ok, do you mean it sounds fine, as in it removes the overly trebbly frequences you don't want? If so, what's the problem?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

I want a 4x12 for a rack setup, theres the problem. Yeah an eq pedal fixes everything

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Well then wait untill you actually get a rack before you splash out on a 4x12. Don't get one now for the sake of getting one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Aye, wise words. I haven't a clue really if i should go rack, we're talking maybe €1k for a decent rack setup on a budget, thats off of ebay/FS section/Buy&Sell. Dunno if its worth it. Argh, back to Japanese Fender GAS so...

What kind of rack do you have in mind?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

I was thinking of an ENGL e530 and whatever decent power amp i can find, maybe a mesa 50/50, beecher has a nice ENGL power amp for sale for.... €400 negotiable!

€400 doesn't sound bad for a good Power Amp at all. You know, if it came to it, you could get a rack setup, and if you can't afford a cab, you could use the speaker from your combo very easily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Ah yeah, a rack setup is a LONG way away yet, I have a tonelab midi controlled atm and that complex enough for me.

    Bargain of the week?

Thats one damn ugly cabinet though

That's a damn good price, especially for a cabinet that uses V30s. Yeah, definetly ugly, but if it sounds good, that's the main thing.

Fair enough, I suppose when I'm getting the Fireball, I'll be going for a matching Engl 2x12, so cheapest doesn't really come into it.

    Sure, worth a shot, innit?

Yeah, cant find much info on those speakers though, might be complete ****e

Go for it. I'm sure you can find guides on the internet for building a cab easily. You have my blessing.

At that price I think I might go build a 4x12 Cab! Sweet price!

Yes them speakers seem to get decent reviews too.

So €30 for a large sheet of marine ply,
About €20 for some carpet/tolex in maplins,
€20 for fixtures and fittings, (metal corners, handles jackplate etc, all in maplin)
Speakers work out at €132 for four.
I have the screws and glue already

That'd be a really nice cab for about €200

And you'd have the extra satisfaction of having made it yourself fo' cheep.
    Plus there's the street cred.

    Yep, there's definetly that.

Hell, I might try build one myself at some stage. "Hungus" brand speaker cabs! :D

6505 sounds good through the behringer. have it through a 1960a for recording and its fairly similar in fairness

Crap, I've just looked up the speakers on thomann, and look how much it is for the G12!

Excellent stuff, so I think a "best cab competition" is in order, pie for the winner of course.

    Banoffee pie? :o

Seriously though, the idea of building a speaker cabinet is really intruiging me. I'd say when I've got the money, I'll just go ahead and buy the Fireball and Engl 2x12. I wouldn't want to buy the head, and then spend another week or more waiting untill I've built the cab. But building a 4x12 after that could be very interesting, and having another speaker cabinet there as a reference would be handy.

Any plans on what you're going to call your brand of cab?

Uh... Ill get an old Marshall logo and rearrange the letters to read Mash-all hehehe. Why dont you make the cab now and have it for when the Fireball comes? I think I might make a horizontal 2x12

I think it might be a lot handier to buy something like this for parts and then two of those celestions, it might work out cheaper

Sweet stuff man! You're way ahead of me. I should really get a start on this, if I intend to have a decent cab up and running any time soon.
