Does anyone have any idea when the results of exemptions will be posted? Esp. for BESS?

They announce the scholars on Trinity Monday (Monday after Trinity Ball, or perhaps Monday before but I think it's the Monday after) so that's the latest it could possibly be.

Exemptions are a fair bit before that though, arent they?

BESS exemptions are this Monday!

Anyone do law schols? Are you allowed to reveal what was on the paper?

I heard that rumour but don't know how true it is. No lectures on Monday so don't want to go in unless its definite.

If they are what time do you imagine it would be at?

    It'd probably be mid-morning?

If you did Economics Schols it's quite possible I know you. If you're not going in on Monday and want me/Europerson to check for you we will. Send me a PM.

Post on here if they are up, that would be great.

Any confirmation from anyone important that they will be up on Monday?

Pat McCabe is the origin of the Monday rumour.

If only we had Dr. Carol's phone number... :(.

I wouldn't get your hopes up. I'd believe Newman but I wouldn't take McCabe's words as gospel.

Yeah thus the doubt and the declaration of "rumour"!

Although he's a fairly reliable source. I can't imagine the LA1240 exams (etc.) could be fully corrected by now though.

Well there was only 18 doing law I think, without accounting for any drop outs.

And even that's nothing on Dr Newman's response times in fairness!

    Good point.

Who are you, by the way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭gilroyb

They get the exemptions list up fairly fast. In fairness though, even if you don't get full exemptions, you deserve the days off until the list goes up. Sit back and relax until you hear.

How do people feel they did by the way? Were there any exams in particular that BESS people didn't like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭europerson

According to Dr. Sean Barrett (of EC2030), the list of BESS Scholars was being compiled at a final meeting last Thursday. He said that everyone (staff) in the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy would practically know who the Scholars are at that stage. Obviously, such names will have to go before the Board. In that case, Monday would appear to be a realisable target for having the exemptions list up.

West European Politics. I'd rather not think about it.

Lot of bess heads here doin schols. So europerson, are you saying that in each school most of the staff already know (or will soon know) who is and who isn't a scholar? Or would it be only the one or two that need to know?

Will the exemption list be put up in the same place the schol timetables were? Not that exemptions would make a blind bit of difference to me (bein JS), but I'd check out the list n anyway.

From the way my this particular lecturer was speaking, every lecturer who teaches a course within the BESS programme had to attend a meeting on Thursday (the second of two), at which each class's marks were presented, general papers examined, etc. to see who would get Schols. In this way, I would take it that practically every concerned lecturer would know, at this stage, who did well, who got Schols, etc. Now maybe the system is different down the science end, where there's less subjectivity, and potentially less need for Courts of Examiners and the like.

    It was last year, anyway.

Interesting, interesting... Yes I'm not sure a meeting of the same scale would occur down here, but it definitely would occur.

I've got a couple questions for the schol sitters. Did you write your full name and all up on all your answer sheets? Was that required or did you just need to put your seat number on it? How do you feel about the lack of anonymous marking? Do you think it will hinder or help you? I'm somewhat concerned in this regard considering I'm JS, might not boad well for me when being marked.

Well, last year it was the second week back, which'd make it this week coming... As I recall each faculty did it on a different day of the week, but we all had our happy or unhappy news by the end of it.

Yup, this one's true. Though the announcement's on Trinity Monday in May and things do have to go to the Board of the College for formal approval, pretty much all of your lecturers will actually know already.

More than that, it's by no means uncommon to have one whisper in your ear that "it might be a good idea to come in on Trinity Monday" or in some cases even tell you outright. Just seems to be one of those things there's no consistency on - and it's also one of the many things they're thinking about changing in their review.

Which BESS lecturer would spill the beans?

It's rarely a case that that will effect anyone though right? What circumstances would lead to it? Gross anti-social behaviour etc. that type of thing?

I know what lecturer I'm going to have a chinwag with next week ;)

    Right_Side wrote:

It'd be more likely to be one that you're already on good terms with.

ETA: to expand on that one liner answer: as i think that it's a bit of a no no for the staff members to be leaking info from confidential meetings like that, so they're not going to be massaging the rules for someone that just appears randomly at their office door one day.

It's not. Courts of examiners are part of the College system, not the property of any one faculty. And yes, decisions on scholars etc are taken well ahead of Trinity Monday. The time and format of the release of exemptions is entirely up to individual academic units, though. And the extent of such exemptions is as specified in the College Calendar, and varies quite a lot from course to course, so make sure you know what applies to you (my friend told me etc doesn't count).

And finally, no-one told me that I was going to be elected as a Scholar. I turned up in the rain on Trinity Monday, knowing that I had exemptions (like most other candidates in law!) but with no quiet words or hints. I was always quite bitter towards those who knew in advance ;)

True, although the dislike wasn't strong enough to stop me getting it ;)

Actually, I suspect the sadistic streak in lawyers (what? never!) may also be a contributory factor.

Yes. Next week's comment will be 'hey, did you see xeduCat in the library? He keeps looking over his shoulder and muttering something about calling security'.

'is that a can of pepper spray in his pocket, or is he just happy to see me..?'

    back on topic/

there's some sort of formal event on in the evening of Trinity monday for the new scholars, isn't there? for the sake of wardrobe sanity people should be told in advance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 793 ✭✭✭xeduCat

Yup. 'Scholars of the Decade' dinner - i.e. this year it will be the newly-elected, plus the scholars of 1996, 1986, 1976 et cetera. 'Formal' typically consists of 'oh sh't, where did I put that tux/gown from the Trinity Ball [3 days earlier], oh there it is, no-one will notice the wrinkles from it being in a ball on the ground since Saturday morning will they?'

They also serve a different wine with each course.

I know a guy who was named a scholar last year and as he thought he'd no chance of getting them he didn't bother coming in and missed out on the announcement etc!

Same here.. I know a fella who came in just to study on trinity monday about noon (cos in sci you can't get full excemptions), saw a list at the exam hall and just had a look to see if he knew anybody that got it. Saw his own name there and was like "okay". I still to this day don't think it has sunk in on him

    Amen.

It really is something that makes for a funny story or two though:

<Walking past cricket crease with three other similarly giddy and disbelieving newly elected scholars, resplendent in dodgy overpriced gown-thing, when classmate cycles past>
    Classmate: Congrats guys!
magicgumdrop & others: Thanks, it's brilliant, isn't it! Well done to you too, btw.
    <Classmate falls of bike>
<Classmate is dragged to exam hall until he believes, amid peals of laughter>

Sometimes you've gotta love the system...

    Fair play.

Just got back from checking the list down here on the hamo end, failed to find my student number. :(

Actually took me a couple seconds to realise that I wouldn't be on a list that shows people who get exemptions because I cant get exemptions. So after a brief feeling of relief it occured to me that it was rather stupid not to have understood that basic concept. Bye-bye any confidence in own intelligence. Right I'm off to figure out how I can make enough money to afford rent next year.

It's a list of student numbers and phrases beside them like "Full exemptions" or "Exempt in ...".

In BESS, at least, anything you get a first in you get exemptions in. So, if you get six II.2's and a I, you don't have to sit the subject, in which you got the first. You won't get any exemptions if you fail anything, I think.
