Mine is a Zigview-R and a prime, possibly a 35mm prime, so that it'll work as a 50mm on my DSlr!

    Probably a Canon 50mm MKII f/1.8 prime then a 430EX speedlite.
    And some more memory maybe.

A manual adaptor for my Olympus so that I can use it in full manual mode and control the shutter speed... believe it or not!

Got many things on my "wishlist" not sure yet in what order:

    Sigma 10-20mm
    Sigma 24-70mm
    Flash 580EX

Hmm...and still want a Wacom tablet as well...

And with all that new gear I will also need a new camera bag :D

Actually I'll most likely be buying a laptop next which is kind of photography related, but after that I want something looooong. Maybe the EF 400/5.6L or the Sigma 50-500.

I've been putting money away for ages for a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM and I'm nearly there. I've been borrowing one for a while and love it.

Don't ask me why but I recently bought a Nikon F4s - it's in great nick and cheap, couldn't resist !

A real mans camera built like the proverbial brick outhouse :D

Used them about 15 years ago when a house-mate was a semi pro and had a couple of them.

Probably won't use it much but next is a couple of rolls of Kodachrome for old times sake(and someone to carry it - weighs a ton :p )

Actually thinking of buying a Leica M thingy as a way to invest in an inheritance.

    Good idea? Doable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

    Excellent idea, excellent investment....now...

Can you afford going without food for a few months :p

If you're going to get one to use, get an M6, if you want it for the investment, go for the earliest model you can. They are a lot of money though...

I finish my Finals at the end of May and i plan getting a job and spending most of the money on camera stuff!!

    A monopod
A 70-300 lens (possibly the sigma dg apo)
(or if I earn loads the Canon 70-200L...)
    a canon 17-85
    A super wide angle
An external hard drive maybe 200gb
A PC for myself. A big ass machine.

Yep, ill need ALOT of money.

Probably a 35mm prime like Faj is after. Got the Sigma 18-200 recently and I'm happy enough. Focusing is a bit of a pain sometimes. But I got it at a good price from a dude on here. Got a 580ex a while ago that I really must use more. I have the 10-22mm canon and I'd recommend it to anyone. Maybe I'll flog my sigma fisheye to pay for the 35mm prime as I've only used it once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Sorry, how much for the fisheye?

Bah, no. Don't tempt me like that... :p

Anyone the same as me in thinking that canons new range of non L lenses look more plasticky than older models.
Examples would be the 17-85 and the 10-22 ,the light grey zoom ring looks like cheaper manufacturing

Guys, you're all talking about what you are going to buy next, but why? Walk before you can run. Not that the stuff been mentioned is really top end stuff, but I think by rushing out and gettin new things just dilutes whatever knowledge you may have of the current camera you own.

I'd prefere to know one camera very well then after I've reached the max out of my current kit, perhaps get a new lens or something, which for some of you, that might be the case, but going by the photos some of you have produced... hmm perhaps not..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

Well, to be fair, I've been using my Dslr since the 300D came out, my 1000Fn properly for 4ish years, and a digital P&S since 1.3mega pixels were the norm. I do a lot of gig photography, and do a lot of photography based work for college. I buy things that I know'll come in useful. :)

I think buying new gear can give a new life to your equipment. If you've been using a standard 18-55mm for your shots, and you get a lens with a good zoom (200/300) or a sub 35mm lens, it can really bring a completly different angle (Excuse the pun) to your photography.

Plus, it's nice to be able to save up for something that you want, will find useful, and last god only knows how many years.

What the hell are you on about? The very nature of the SLR camera is to go out and buy new lenses to do different jobs. I'm sure even someone of your immense photographic genius would find it difficult to shoot wildlife or macro with a bog standard kit lens. I'm not going to backtrack and get into point & shoot fixed lens cameras because I think most people here are beyond that.

It doesn't work like that. I would have assumed you'd know that already but hmm... perhaps not.

I really want to sell my old(ish) Canon EOS 300D and get meself a brand spanking new EOS 30D .. drool ....

Then (after my credit card has had a good lie down in a dark room) I need to get a decent telephoto ..

Well the way it works for most people, myself included, is you start small and build up. For example I bought a 300D because at the time I wouldn't have a clue how to use all the different features of a 10D so there was no point spending the extra money. Same with my crappy €100 telephoto from Sigma. Bought that ages ago when I was just starting off. I wanted something cheap and cheerful to practice with. Now I can afford something better, and I do photography a lot more, it makes sense to upgrade.

To me photography is like computers, in that you are better upgrading in increments rather than blowing all your money at the very start for the most expensive kit and lenses you can afford.

I paid about €400 for it. It's a sweet lens but I have the same one for my old film minolta and I just couldn't switch to using it with the crop factor on the canon when I could still use it on the minolta.

As for Shrimp. You use a point and shoot and think it's as good as any SLR, you need to get a bit of learning into you.

I agree with you but while I was running a roll of film* through the above mentioned Nikon F4s I just brought a 50mm with me,I must admit it made me think a lot more about the shots and made me adapt to suit the lens rather than hitting the zoom ring or looking for a different lens.It was a useful exercise for me anyway.

    * Negative/print film (aaargh !) Seems I can't get slide film anymore in my reasonably sized town, even the selection of negative is pretty small.A young wan in one shop hadn't a clue what I was on about LOL

If someone has a reason for buying a lense ,they might be the link someone needs to getting what they want.
Personally I would never of thought of the lense that fajitas uses ,but when he showed me his 10-20 sigma DC I was pleasantly surprised.
Thanks again fajitas ,you know your stuff.

Definately. sometimes I'd only bring the 50mm with me and its humbling to see what you know you couldnt shoot. On the whole, making do with one lens while you learn all about your camera is nonsense.

There is a difference, as you have pointed out, between being able to comfortably use one lens and only owning one lens. At least you could have had the option of bringing something wider and/or longer with you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

    Did I offend you rymus?

And as for my post, all I was saying was, that some people seem as though they are just buying lenses because it'd be nice to have a collection, an not because they have really thought about it and think it'd help them learn. I personally know people who have done this, and now rarely use their camera, as they found it all to confusing diving in at the deep end.

Anyways, I think some ppl might have misread what I typed.. There was no offence meant.

As for you FX.. When did i ever say that my Canon G6 was better than ANY slr? Don't you think thats not telling a lie, as I never said that, only a fool would say that.

on the contrary, The camera only does a portion of the work, the photographer/artist does the rest.

oh and FX, we all have learning to do, you'll learn that some day ;)

Shrimp thinks his photos are all that. He doesn't take critisism very well and comes across extremely arrogant. I think he's just a bit immature. Give him a few years to cop on.

I can take critique. Thats why I post my photos on proper photography forums that dont sugar coat their words, and tell you exactly what you're doing right and wrong. Not like this whimp-ass forum, were the whole community get upset when you dont like a photo!

It annoys me to have to say that Shrimp is quite a good photographer / photoshopper. It's his writing that lets him down. I really hate that every second thread turns into a discussion of one particular boards member. He's good with his G6 which is a good camera and there's no doubt he'd be good with an SLR too, but it's not fair to criticise him because his camera has a fixed lens. We can mostly agree with most of the rest of the Shrimp-icism but it sure does get tedious. And that's the first and last comment I make on the matter.

As for what's next - I've gathered a nice little Canon setup over the last few months so the priority is learning to take better pictures and meanwhile saving for a Canon 30D.

No no, not at all... I just thought the advice given in the last post was a bit dodgy.
And as for my post, all I was saying was, that some people seem as though they are just buying lenses because it'd be nice to have a collection, an not because they have really thought about it and think it'd help them learn.

Indeed. Buying new & expensive lenses just to fill a camera bag is pointless. With experience, people will know what kind of lenses they need and won't just go out and buy every white L they can get their hands on :D

Anyways, I think some ppl might have misread what I typed.. There was no offence meant.

I think you may want to consider adding that into your sig :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

I'll add another one then.. a set of Kenko extension tubes. Decided to put off the purchase of a dedicated macro lens for a while. The tubes will suffice for now so I can possibly get the 70-200 sometime this century :D

The whole community gets upset when you make one line sweeping insults against a photo without explaining your reasons for insulting it. If you post anywhere other than deviant art, I'd like to get some links to some of your posts... just for some idle reading.

Now as Dimy suggested, lets get back on topic

In fact, here's an idea. If people want to bitch at eachother non-stop, start a thread. I'm starting to get very pissed off with legit threads being hijacked with namecalling and other general childishness. It'll only lead to bad places; i.e. bans and thread locking.

For the insults towards people who buy L lenses without being a photographer.

The reason I bought an L lense is because it got the highest review % on fred miranda.I spent days and days trying to decide but because at the time i didn't know anyone with an SLR I considered it the safest bet for a really good zoom 70-200 F4
I have gotten some beautiful portraits and wedding shots ,the skin colour from the L lense is pure.
