Things we Love about the gym!

Lets have a positive thread here! I mean we all go for a reason, but theres something that keeps us there right?

Mine has to be that feeling of mini-euphoria getting in the shower after a good session, feeling as though I've really done something good for me.
When you realise that its paying off, for whatever reason you go for- me just to get fitter, increase my flexability and feel better about myself, and it works for me.
    Love it!!
    :D

The feeling of nailing a new 1RM and having one or two of the regulars see it. Your a regular and they are regulars, and they know that a week or two ago there was a quarter or a half of a wheel less on the bar for that lift and they know that when they hit there's you will be there to see it.

It's the little unspoken bond between people down the gym, be it the big guys aiming for a new 1RM or the fresh start housewifes who can't believe they made it for 10 lenghts without stopping.

It's the feeling of acheiving and being surrounded by like minded people.

    It's home.

well i might as well be the first perv.

I have to say i love looking at the women, There is nothing better then seeing women who are there to work and work hard, the ones that you can tell are actually pushing them selves and aren't there just to look good while "working out" and also the ones who aren't afraid to enter the male dominated free weights area and do a proper routine, it doesn't have to be a heavy set once they are doing it properly. I just love it when they come in and use good form and put most of the men to shame even if they aren't lifting as heavy. I don't know what it is but it always want to push myself more for some reason.

That and 45 minutes into a hard spinning class and you know there is only one more song to go and you just say F'it and give it your all. you just feel so good knowing you psuh yourself

A girl I know was saying she loved the gym since she got to eye up lots of toned men, is she also a pervert?

To me a pervert would be a guy eyeing up women in the gym, who also had a chickens head shoved up his hole.;) Looking at the opposite sex is not preverted IMO.

I love everything about the gym, I love pushing myself for that one extra rep, I love moving up a weight on the bench, just started benching 120kg which is big for me, and putting on those 2 25kgs on either side for the first time was bliss, right now im in love with the gym, ive moved up pretty fast on the bench, squats, everything really, so im pretty sure im going to hit a stalemate pretty soon, but for now, everything is perfect.

    1) The endorphin rush during and after a good workout. Your body feels exhausted but like a previous poster said, you're in a mini euphoria..

    2) Being complimented by friends about how you look. Important, as you don't always see it yourself.

    3) Beating a personal record, be it on the treadmill, or lifting weights. I recently went up in weight on the bench for the first time in ages, so I'm very happy with that.

    4) Watching the girls give it their all.

He robbed my post before I got to post it!!
Kinda linked to that is the stress relief.

I'm in crunch and get a monthly report mailed out to me sayign how much I lifted, calories burnt etc, first time I got it I early pi$$ed myself, it gave the total weight lifted and said it was the equilivant to lifting so many elephants!! now I love seeing what I lifted each month.

Reading the other posts, I'm amazed any girls go to the gym, if they are just being starred at all the time???

What exactly do you mean by benching 120kg, do you mean machine press, i am in a bit of a hardcore gym(Powerhouse) and i'd only see one or two dudes doing a set on 120 kg - i don'r get the impression your a bodybuilder either.

    Not slamming you, just curious

120kg on the bench press, and i'm not a buildybuilder at all, I would usually do a set of 7 then 6 then 5, ive seen people lift a lot more its not that heavy in terms of what i've seen the big guys lifting

I love the whole damn thing,i love that quickening of the pulse as you walk into th egym and mentally run over what you're going to do.I love when you hump your first weight of the session and the blood rushes into your muscles and you realise this is whay you do it all.I love when you surprise yourself with just how much you can move versus a few months ago...and lately i love when people ask you questions about your set..makes you feel like its all worthwhile!!

yeah maybe your right then i'll find out if its lbs or kgs anyways i could of sworn it was kgs though.

EDIT : just talking to my mate and 120lbs is only meant to equal to 55kgs or something, and thats what we defiently started off on when we first went to the gym, so its defo 120kgs, are you sure its that big? my little brother has been going to the gym for just over a year and is benching 80kgs and hes only just 17!

If it's 120kg then fair play to you.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,963 ✭✭✭SpAcEd OuT

yeah over the last few months i've really increased my bench and put on a lot of weight, have been taking about 150grams of whey a day, 15g of creatine and my mate brought me back some test boosters from bulgaria which have really helped, as well as eating a lot

Doubling from 55 to 120 is a huge achievement. How long did it take?
Anyone I know who could bench 120kg was..big. What height/weight are you? You play rugby?
    Fair play tbh.

Doing a set of spider curls or 21s, feeling the pump in your bis and doing the "pain dance" of wobbling your arms around to try and shake off the lactic acid build up!

yeah well to be honest, we were doing 55-60kg but doing 3 sets of 15reps with ease, and my mate said we should probably start lifting heavier, this is was like only few months ago so we went up to 80kg, and started doing 3 sets of reps 7,6,5 did that for 3 weeks, then went up 90kg, 7,6,5 did that for 3 weeks, 100kg, 7,6,5 did that for a month, then 110kg, 7,6,5 did that for 3 weeks, then the other day i started 120kg with a bit of help from a spotter, I was thinking of dropping down and doing 110kg for awhile though cause my form isnt good, struggle when touching chest and all that. Ive been playing rugby for years now so the gym was nothing new to me, but after school i stopped for awhile and started losing a lot of weight, i went down like 2 stone, in a year, no joke! just from barely eating (student life) and playing soccer, but I got my diet back on track, a lot of people were concerned with how much weight i put back on in just a few months but I can drop weight and put on weight very easily, so im 14stone now, 6ft 2, eating whenever possible, i was always very natrually strong, I remember in the juniors season when i must have been only 15, being able to do a 1 rep of 85kg when the season finished so i quess im lucky in that sense

anyways sorry to the OP i've seemed to hijack the topic :o

meh, we love it, most of the time- just so long as its not overly stalker-ish. means all the hard work is paying off. In fact I get more worried when I don't get stared at :o

Have to disagree with you there. I hate when I'm on my final set of squats and my legs are about to jump ship & find a less active owner & I catch some moron staring at my butt.

Makes me want to accidentally drop a dumbell on his foot while Im re-racking it. heh heh heh.....(thought putting me in good mood :) )

Yes yes G'em it's all your fault!

Before, I was like mild-mannered and innocent (pic 1) .

Now I rampage around the gym, pushing weaklings out of my way (pic 2).

I have also developed the worrying tendency to turn green, huge and muscly and rip off my shirt when somene is using a piece of equipment I want to use...What exactly is in that protein shake you suggested I use??
