    Hi all..
Might aswell give it a go..
Basically my friend who lives on South Circular Road, Dublin 8 had her housemates car broken into and the laptop stolen. Its not the laptop thats important. Its more the fact that shes a photograper and all of her last few years work is on it.. So would be great to get it back..

Anybody hear of a laptop going for sale? It was stolen yesterday evening, i guess they would be pretty anxious to offload it? The brandname is Gericom.

    thanks for reading.

I am posting something useful! People under estimate the importance of backing up work, we all assume 'it wont happen to us'. I had a lot of work on my pc not so long ago that I lost due to a virus, so if there's one thing the OP should take from this its that piece of advice.

May I bring it to the attention of others that your post was even less helpful to the OP? Smooth.

    Precisely!

    @OP

Best thing for your friend if portability is necessery would be a 1Gig flash stick, fits right on to your key ring. They may come in 2 Gig now, I'm not sure...

thanks for all those words of wisdom but unfortunately its too late..
She should have backed up the stuff but she didnt..
So the only thing i can do now is ask around, see if anyone was offered a laptop for a 'good' price :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,866 ✭✭✭Adam

Best of luck too you, unfortunately its highly unlikely she'll see it again!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Tiesto

yea unlikely but sher im just giving this a try...
would be willing to pay a few hundred for it aswell...

Did she keep track of the service tag? If it's a Dell laptop, there would have been a service tag on it on the underside. Ring Dell with it and report it stolen. If it isn't dell, I'm not sure how it works, but I'd say there is something similar.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Tiesto

    its not dell, its Gericom..
I know it was foolish to leave the laptop in the car...
But she just got back from the airport and she was in the house less than 2 minutes when the neighbours rang the doorbell and told her the car was broken into

no need for all the irrelevant replies thanks
whether it should be a sticky or not is irrelevant, i asked one of the moderators if it was possible to do for a day and he was decent enough to help me out.

go to the police and talk to them as there might be camera around there.what part of scr was it robbed on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 288 ✭✭hepcat

POst up no questions asked reward notice for whoever "finds" laptop, in the local shops / pubs? Scumbags who stole it are probably from around there...If she's willing to pay a few hundred that's probably about what they'd get for the laptop anyway..Might be worth a try if its that important to her.

Don't forget about Broken and Stolen.

I live just off the South circular and got my laptop robbed as did next door neighbour. The police knew exactly who it was and they recovered the laptop in a few days and I got it back bout a week later. The cops were really quick and really good, but it may have different as the scumbags broke into houses to get stuff.

    good luck!

Had my car broken into a couple of years back near Pearse Street. The radio was taken and a pile of CDs. Gardai got it all back except for 1 CD. As the poster said they knew who to "call on".

You are going to hate me for this. You are going to hate me. Your friends work has probably been erased and the laptop rebooted.

Spot on. Even if the disk has been erased, the data can still be recovered.
A mates harddisk crashed a few weeks ago. The PC wouldn't even boot anymore. He had some really important info re his upcoming wedding.
€100-ish and he got it back.

I did not realise that such data could be retrieved, so I thought that you might have been engaging in a pointless exercise.

Maybe you shouldn't act like such a dick when you are expecting people to do favours for you.

Can we please unsticky this thread now? Given that the OP is now jumping down people's throats when he thinks they are unworthy?

    Note to OP:
It's not our problem. We don't have to do anything for you. Bitching at people who are posting information intending to tell you what has most likely happened to the laptop isn't going to make us any more likely to help you.
And for what it's worth, I don't think this should have been stickied in the first place, particularly not AH.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭Tiesto

slutmonkey can you not read either?
I was getting nothing but useless replies at the beginning, and i said i dont want anyone to post "irrelevant" info. You think I dont know what is the likely outcome!!!

I live up on South Circular road as well, and this time last year my laptop was stolen from the luggage compartment underneath a bus eireann bus, and again, it was not the stolen laptop that was the problem, it was all my college assignments and stuff that were on it. I had made backup copies onto floppy discs and sadly for me the backup's were in the laptop bag. unfortunately I have to tell your friend not to hold her breath, as despite getting the gardai involved and my solicitor, my bag has still never turned up. :(

    I don't think he does.
OP started the thread by asking if anyone had heard about the laptop. He/she got some helpful responses, but also got some replies that were in no way helpful. He/she responded (without being abusive), but when the comments got out of hand he/she responded accordingly.
I'm with the OP on this one.
