Teenager killed in Offaly bus crash

    04 April 2006 12:15
A 15-year-old boy has been killed and dozens more students injured in a road crash involving a school bus in Co Offaly.

The accident happened between Rahan and Clara shortly after 8am this morning when the bus overturned on the road.

According to the Health Service Executive, up to ten of the most seriously injured teenagers are being treated at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore, but that none of their injuries are life-threatening.

The HSE says a further 22 people have been transferred to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

Apparently the back wheels fell off the 1989 bus.......

Road accidents/crashes. As of 26 March, 89 people have died on Irish roads this year.
With the numbers of RTAs here statistically there are going to be bus crashes as well as car and truck crashes.

Overall travelling by bus is many times safer than by car.

The back wheels fell off the bus which is a mechanical failure that SHOULD not happen if the bus was up to scratch and inspected properly. Also once again no seat belts !!!!

There is absolutely no way you can tell just from looking at a few pictures of the aftermath what caused a crash. Making wild speculations is not helpful.

You are correct, no seatbelts. No legal requirement for them either.

Im from donegal and the area im from is notorious (spelling?) for road accidents. With the buses that operate in my area (Lough Swilly Railway) im very surprised that an accident hasn't occured yet, not one of them is younger than 15 years and some of them look like they are falling apart. The irish government needs a kick in the hole to get on the condition of the transport services in the other counties besides dublin.

On the RTE News it can clearly be seen the wheels and rear axle are no longer attached. As to how they got detached, that is best left up to the accident investigators.

AFAIK it was the back axle which detached from the chassis. You seem to be assuming that this caused the accident. The axle detatchment may have occurred as a result of the crash, i.e. it may have sheared off after colliding with a rock on the boggy terrain.

That doesn't mean anything. After a plane crash the wings will sometimes be missing, they don't usually fall off mid-flight though.

The young lad who was killed is the son of friends of the family. My 17 yr old cousins got a lift into school with their dad instead of getting the bus this morning and saw the crash. When the fúck is it going to become mandatory to have seatbelts on all buses?

In regards to the road, the bog road is quite old, but was resurfaced a few years ago, and is not nearly as full of pot-holes as it once was. I just can't believe another school bus has crashed. Sorry if I'm waffling.

Well from watching the footage of the incident on the rte news website, you can see the state of the bus with no back wheels & axle. If it was a mechanical fault then it's pretty likely that there was a fault around the wheels/axle. How this bus passed the relevant safety test to count it as road worthy is very questionable IMO.

Sorry but you are taking complete bollíx. How do you know there was not an object on the road that the bus hit and the impact damaged the wheels and caused them to fall off? The strain when the bus was overturning could have damaged the wheels. There could be a hundred different causes.

Listen mate, if you actually read my post I said that if the lack of the back axle was down to a mechanical fault then how could the bus being made road-worthy in the first place. And NOT that it was a mechanical fault, it's up to the investigator's to come to the conclusion if there was or not.

It's mandatory in cars. Yet every time I do the schoolrun I see cars driving past with unrestrained kids. Our school is in a narrow lane and the other morning I see a mother driving along, unrestrained kids and she doing her lipstick.

If children won't buckle-up with their parents present I doubt they'll do it on a bus..

A bus route I travel on regularly has seatbelts fitted on all the buses. It's very rare to see anybody use them. If adults won't belt up on buses then children certainly won't unless it's made mandatory. And even if it is mandatory, how would this be implemented?

I did read your post and when you say "How this bus passed the relevant safety test to count it as road worthy is very questionable IMO." suggests that as far as you are concerned there is no need for an enquiry, you have it all worked out.

That would have to be some rock...

Nothing will be known for sure until all aspect of the investigation are complete........ But it's still pretty unusual for the whole axle to be torn off..

According to RTE News the boy that died is an only son. His parents own a bar in the town. I'm gona wait until the investigation is completed before making judgements about the state of the bus, I was not there, I've only seen what everyone else has seen. Lets see if the axle falling off was the reason, or a result of the crash.

fortunately I haven't had to travel on Lough Swilly for many years now but I doubt if their old stell tanks would cruch under the pressure of a crash -they were meadein the days when steel was steel.

From what I've seen of the footage - I'd guess that many more would have died had they been trapped in their seats by seatbelts.

That's not really funny, given the circumstances of what happened.

Heard about this this morning. Absolutely tragic, especially with the last school bus crash still in fairly recent memory.

Local rumour mill has it that the boy killed was not only an only son, but was in fact the son of the busdriver himself.
