    Okay,

Basically I've been training for the last couple of months, 2 nights a week, and I'm no better off than when I started really. We do a 2km run to start off with but my legs are like sandbags running around. For sprints I'm fine, better than fine in fact.

What could be causing this? My diet? I'm 6ft, roughly 12 and a half stone.

    Go raibh maith agat

Sounds like you're built for speed - I'ld say you probably just have big legs full of anaerobic muscles for going fast, but they're just useless weight over the long haul. I'ld say just keep training & maybe knock it up to 3 times a week.

You're diet could be responsible if you're selling yourself short on energy for your run. Do you feel energetic before starting out?

I feel alright before starting out to be honest. Big legs I do have, 24" thigh size roughly. Is that normal/abnormal?

what is the rest of your workout like, are you seeing no results in anything else or is just the 2 km run at the start. Also do you use the 2 km run as part of your warm up or is a proper part of your routine

I'm training with a team jsb. I see results in my sprinting, but I've always been decent enough in that area so it's harder to tell. I don't see any results in the 2km run at the beginning or in some of the little faster running exercises in the middle of training. The 2km run is the first thing we do so it's really a warm up.

Its hard to know what to suggest without seeing the total training programme. Running 2km followed by speedwork seems a bit haphazard and not condusive to improving speed if thats one of the purposes of the session your team is doing.

But since you are training with a team it will be difficult to change that session and if you want to improve your tolerance of a 2km run it might be an idea to break it down into an interval session. It would require an extra session by yourself but start with something like this - 3 runs of 500m, with a 60-90 secs rest between runs. Run the 500m at the pace you wish to run the 2km (or maybe a little faster). Gradually build up each week, add 50m to each run, in a month you will be doing 3 * 700, change around to 4*500 if you wish, adding distance, reducing the recovery.

While diet is important, its not going to have massive effects on your endurance or speed if you are training twice a week. I think your problem is you are not fit enough just yet to do the 2km run at the pace you want to, the interval session above will assist in that.

ye if it is a 2km run as a warm up and run probably in a group you probably aren't going to see that much results as you proabably aren't pushing yourself in anyway through it and shouldn't be if it is your warm up.

I'd go with tingle and add a seperate session if you can and focus on increasing pace and distance

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I'll go along with what Tingle said for the next few weeks and see how it goes. By the way, is thigh size 24" normal/abnormal ?

normal, although you'ld be needing to be posting some crazy ass numbers for me to say your legs are 'abnormal'. :D

One other thing Tingle, a course of a football pitch is roughly 500m isn't it? And how many times a week should I do my extra training? Twice?
