I bought this one from Richersounds. Has played every single DivX and Xvid I've thrown at it. Only cost €90.

I would recommend this one from Pixmania

    http://www.pixmania.com/ie/uk/78288/art/h-b/dvd-divx-player-dx-3255.html

good reviews and as I was buying some bits n bobs the P+P wasnt too much extra

    Well, it does say:
Integrated Audio Decoder DTS compatible and Dolby Digital 5.1

It says Zone2 so dunno if it's Multiregion though..

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,470 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

if the multiregion q is in relation to the dx-3255, dvdrhelp gives the crack

Saw this in Maplin today-might be of interest: Chili DVD 7200X CU for 82.50. DVD/MP4/DivX player with 5.1 sound. It also has a port for various memory cards and a USB memory stick (spec'd at USB1.1). Has anyone else bought one? Searched around the net, but didn't find much, except this- http://www.3wisemonkeys.co.uk/proddet.jsp?id=1398&cat=5

I had a Yamada branded player and it worked fine. Grand and quiet and worth a punt for the cost. (As well as that if you squint your eyes you can pretend it says Yamaha!)

i've found it for €50 inc postage at http://www.usefulsound.de/index.php?idcat=32&artikel=UMA++DVD-7200XCU&page=1. it helps if you can understand german ;)

bizzarely the player's price dropped from €46.44 to €31.44 before postage when i registered an irish delivery address, so the total inc postage is the same as getting it delivered to germany. i haven't paypalled them the money just yet, i'm waiting to see if i get an email tomorrow morning to say there's been a mistake!

looking at http://www.dvdboard.de/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=123 the player seems to get good reviews. there's a detailed review of a very similar player at http://www.dv-rec.de/test/player2005/chili305/chili305.htm and the multiregion code given on that is supposed to work on this player too

good stuff carrotcake! let us know how you get on with that one. cheers dude

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭carrotcake

no complaints, so i sent the money just now. they say on the site that the player will we available in around 3 days, i just have to sit tight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭carrotcake

i ended up having to pay the rest, plus extra for using paypal. still worked out €14 cheaper than maplins tho :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭Doodlebug

Carrotcake, my German is about as good as my Swahili :D ...
Do you know if the Chili DVD/DivX player can play straight from the USB stick? A 4GB stick from Komplett & I'd be laughin - no more having to burn DVDs!

To be honest I wouldn't mind payin the Maplin price to be able to bring it home & plug it in (& return it in case there was a problem!). ;)

there doesn't seem to be any problems with them. but going by the reports on external hard drives, they must use the fat32 file system. or at least have a fat32 primary partition

@doodlebug: just posted a question on the maplin page to see if it will play divx files from the usb port so lets see how long it takes for a response! i reckon a couple of wks! :) saps
i thought i saw it somewhere though that it was just for jpegs etc so don't get your hopes up dude.

@johnnyboy: you can use babelfish to translate the page or part of. its not perfect but still usually pretty helpful. http://world.altavista.com/

ok, here's some (what i thought would be) quick instructions.

go to http://www.usefulsound.de/index.php?idcat=32&artikel=UMA++DVD-7200XCU&page=1 and click on the shopping cart icon beside the price to add it.

in the top-right you'll then see a shopping cart icon with '1 Produkte!' written beside it. click on the 'Zum Warenkorb >>' link just underneath.

the next page shows you the player price (46,44 €) plus postage within germany (3,99 €). this will be recalulated when you say you're in ireland. (irish postage is €18.99.) click the radio button beside 'Ich habe die AGB gelesen und erkenne sie an' (i've read the terms & conditions :p) and click 'bestellung ausfuhren!' (confirm order).

now you've got the form to enter your details. leave 'Benutzername' and 'Passwort' at the top blank. they're for existing customers. i'll give the translations of what you need...
    Anrede: title
    Herr/Frau: Mr/Mrs
Username: Username (Bitte selbst wählen!: Please choose yourself)
Vorname / Firma: first name / company
    Nachname / Firmierung: last name
    Passwort: password
Geburtsdatum (tt.mm.jjjj): date of birth (dd.mm.yyyy)
    Strasse: street
    PLZ: post code
    Land: country
    Ort: city

the button to hit then is 'bestellen' (order). there's no confirmation screen, the order goes straight through and you'll get an email and confirmation screen saying how to pay by paypal or bank transfer. the company is charged a paypal fee, which they pass onto you, but is not given in the total price so you'll have to ask them. this is the important stuff in the email...

    > - E-Mail-Adresse des EmpfÀngers: paypal@usefulshop.de
    > - Betrag: 65,43 EURO (this what should be the right price!)
    > - WÀhrung: Euro
    > - Kategorie für Verkauf: Waren (sonstige)
    > - E-Mail-Betreff: ########## / usefulshop.de
    > - Hinweis: (optional)

    E-Mail-Adresse des EmpfÀngers = receiever's email address
    Betrag = amount
    WÀhrung = currency
Kategorie für Verkauf: Waren (sonstige) = category of sale: goods (other)
    E-Mail-Betreff: ########## / usefulshop.de = email subject: ######### (order number) / usefulshop.de
    Hinweis: (optional) = notes (optional)

    mailed support@umax.co.uk re Chili/yamada
Can you advise if movies (avi) can be played from the USB or memory cards or if it's only for pictures?

    Hi

Avi files can be played from USB stick, not from memory card

    Tech support

    Sorts that question anyway:D

Bought the Avioux today, it does progressive scan. The only problem I've encountered so far is it wont play the audio an burned dvd's which have MPEG-1 encoded audio. Another 2 players in the house can

Aldi are selling a DVD player on Thursday, for €37.99
    http://www.aldi.ie/special_buys/product_152.html

No mention that it plays Divx though. It says MPEG II decoding, which is vague.

Thanks for the lead AB03. The avious player plays everything I've thrown at it yet. Just what I was looking for and relatively cheap as well :D

    can anyone recomend one?
    100ISH EURO budget

The PYE DVD recorder thats €119 in Power City plays DivX's.

Some people didn't rate it much as a recorder. I find it ok, not amazing but usuable. Better DivX player than the Philips 5100 I have.

The IISONIC II3016PU looks good can play from an external HD.

Can anyone with the PowerCity players comment on the media-friendliness of them? My Aldi Tevion Divx player has given up the ghost and has previously gone under 2 DIY cog hacking repairs so it's time I gave in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

Never mind. Picked up one of the Avious ones and it's playing DVD+RW for me anyway. Makes my life easier.

There was also another cute Powerpoint DivX player for €55. Tiny yoke. Went with the boards.ie stamp of quality though and plumped for the Avious.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 449 ✭✭tallaghtdave

Avious what did u pay for it 50 brick?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

Yup. Greenhills. Just to be crystal - the Avious is just Divx/DVD/CD player. The Pye for €130 is DVD recorder w/ Divx playback.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 449 ✭✭tallaghtdave

did u try the basic avi codec and the xvid codecs cds on the player
ive a gang load of them here .
if you want them you can have them mate
of no real use to me till i get a new player with divx or rather avi or xviid support.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,391 ✭✭✭fatherdougalmag

I'll see what I have. The chap in Power City was very obliging. I was concerned about the media capability and he said I could bring it back (nothing on the box or instructions about compatibility). You could always pick one up and see if it's what you're after and just bring it back if it doesn't fit the bill.
