You can now join planetside for free. You can only get to battle rank 6 (out of 25) but you still have access to pretty much everything in the game.
Its called the Reserves program. Check it out on the site. www.planetside.com

Sweet. Gonna check this out. Can't be much worse than BF2. May even be better, and more bug-free:D:p

I bought this game in November of 2003. Spectacularly great game, but one where lag and any fps issues make the game unenjoyable.

Make sure you have a decent connection and a solid machine and you'll love it.

I'm about to get my free account sorted now as I'm too cheap to continue paying for it anymore :(

Btw, do you have access to the Battle Frames? :o

True Ivan, you really need to invest in some nice machinery, even though it has been released 3 years ago, to fully enjoy this game. Remember there can be up to 450 players on the map at once. As for battle frames (the really big robots for newbies), you cant get them on reserves account. Need to pay :(
I would totally pay for planetside, but am only home at weekends, so not much point atm. Its only 12 yo yo s a month, so not too bad.

Wow, have they changed the bfr system or something? I noticed today that I can gun for a bfr on the free account, which is something I could never do on my paid account (without the expansion).

Is this a change to the actual game and bfr's itself, or is it just something about the free account?

If its the latter... well that just pisses me off :(

The expansion is what, 10 quid these days? :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

The two gunner bfrs can be gunned in reserves as reserves has core combat included in the free account.

I saw the expansion for 15 yo yo s in world of wonder newbridge.

If you want the complete set, the new pack called aftershock is for sale in the sony online store for download only. You could get core combat dirt cheap in the soe store aswell, if you dont mind being without the box

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Just played it there for a bit. Had a small bit of trouble getting it started due to the X2 AMD chip, but got it running. Played for two hours. Nice game, and the instant battle thing is nice, as I was walking around for a while previous to that.

It looked easier when I was looking over Ivan's shoulder, tbh, down in Carlow.

Which server and side is everyone on ?
We could setup a TS server and squad up.

My main is on Werner (vanu), but if others are on the US servers I'd be happy enough to create a new toon there.

Any point in getting a TS server setup ?

haven't finished downloading it yet but when i'm set up i'd be into getting something together.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 4,569 Mod ✭✭✭✭Ivan

My main is NC on Werner, but I'm not using my main account atm using a reserve one... which is an NC on werner too :p

But I dont mind restarting the reserve character and switching sides if anyone wants to? ;)

Oh, and syco, the reason it looked so easy when I was playing it is cos I'm l33t :p

And if reserve accounts get Core Combat included, does that mean they can pilot BFR's and go into the caverns?! :o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

    Boards.ie Outfit anyone?

    And replying to Ivan...

Reserves players cannot pilot bfrs. They can go into the caverns, but when you gain capture points and kill points (which are necessary for obtaining bfr), it wont make a difference. You can complete the 75 kills and 5 base captures on reserves, but you cant get bfr. No. Zip. Sorry.

you cant get sniper weapons, heavy assault ... and flying vehicles

you can get the jobbies with the flak guns, or heavy machine guns etc .... I've tried a couple and getting into action is great ...but last night I played a Nc or werner and took, lost, and took again the same gun platform ... killed about 1 million times, at times I think I was spending more time respawning than fighting :(

Am I the only person here who thinks the TR PWN THE **** OUT OF EVERY OTHER FACTION! Seriously, TR have major suckage at times, but my main character is TR, simply because of the Mini-Chaingun (heavy assault). I am reserves myself, and still get a good kick out of the game. Im also VS on emerald, coz VS PWN emerald, thanks to such leet outfits like delta triad. I hate the NC. I dont know why. I started out as NC, but now I just hate them. I think its to do with their over powerful jackhammers (noob hammer), and how 6 nc drop on a tech plant cc, noobhammer everyone in 2 seconds...

Yeh, 3 cert points will get you a sniper cert, unlocking two weapons, the Bolt Driver, and the Heavy Sniper Rifle. I personally recommend you train yourself to get good at using the Bolt Driver. The Heavy Sniper Rifle may have a magazine, and the Bolt Driver just 1 shot and reload, but 2 shots with the Bolt Driver will bring down a Rexo Suit, so it PWNS! :D

    BigEejit wrote:
    Do please,

Reach out and touch someone in that special way - Hairys guide to sniping:

Rule 1 - Position, position, position.

Fairly elementary, and something every sniper guide will talk about, but that doesn't make it any less important. My favoured position for sniping is on the flank of the main axis of a fight, preferably 200+ meters away. Behind the enemy would probably be even better, but is much harder to reach with any kind of regularity.

The reason for picking the flank should be fairly obvious ... negating the enemies cover. If they're moving to engage friendly forces from ahead of them, that is where they will try and place the majority of cover. If you're on the flank, you take that away from them.

When the shots are flying, everyone knows to check high for a sniper. Elevation is good. You know that. Your target knows it too. Check your lines of fire. If you can find somewhere almost as good that isn't so obvious, thats worth taking.

    Rule 2 - Decisions, decisions.
So many targets, so little time. Who do you shoot first? Personally I favour the "one shot, one kill" approach. If you can take out someone with one shot, do it. With taking the Advanced Targeting implant (I recommend this as the first one to get) you can see what your targets health is like. If someone has already weakened them, take them down.

Secondary targets are for me are people being useful .. medics and engineers are prime examples of this.

Tertiary targets are those of opportunity ... everyone else. Plinking a max may not do much, but it will distract them and force them to move .. very useful for suppressing anti air maxes.

Enemy spitfires are the snipers friend. Two shots will blow one up, and kill anyone close by.

Rule 3 - We can rebuild him.
    Implants. My personal recommendation are
    1 - Advanced Targeting
    2 - Darklight
    3 - x12 zoom

Now, the reason for Advanced Targeting is to allow you to maximise your kills. Nuff said already.

Darklight - One of the natural enemies of the sniper is the cloaker. Darklight gives you the best chance of spotting and removing these threats.

x12 zoom - My favoured loadout for dedicated sniping is the twin bolt drivers loadout. With the auto-reload disabled, you can switch from one to the other faster than you can reloading a single bolt driver. The x12 zoom implant means that your eye (and hence targeting reticule) stays on target. Anyone familiar with snipers will be able to guess roughly how long it takes a bolt driver to reload, and hence how long they have to get moving. A second bolt driver shot coming in in half that time will often take them by surprise. Fatally.

Rule 4 - Use the force, Luke.
If you're using a single bolt driver, you need to become adept at figuring out what your target is going to do once your first round slams home. They're unlikely to be accomidating enough to sit there and let you shoot them again. Before you put the first round in, look at the target, check their surroundings and ask if it was you there, which way would you move?

For example, you're going to shoot someone on top of a tower. They're most likely going to run for the nearest door. As soon as you fire your first shot, swing across to cover the door whilst you reload. By the time you've chambered your new round, and your target has run for the door, your bloom will have settled back down, allowing you to pot the target as they try to run inside.

Outside, expect them to move beind the nearest piece of cover. If they're already in a good position, they may just hunker down. Put your crosshairs over them anyway. There are times that the computer will reckon you still have a shot, even if you don't.

Also, don't disregard that single visible foot. If anything is sticking out, they've still a valid target.

Most people, when running, go in straight lines, at least till you hit them once. After that, they'll start jinking and trying to throw your shot off. Learning to lead your target is an essential sniper skill. Don't try and keep your crosshairs on them, as the movement bloom will make it very difficult to score a hit. Instead, put it where you think your target will be in a couple of seconds. If you're wrong, readjust and go again.

Rule 5 - What else do I do?
There are a variety of skills I find useful as a sniper, chief amongst these being medical and engineering. Oftentimes you will find yourself operating effectively alone. Having the ability to heal and repair will keep you in the fight much longer.

Combat Engineer is also useful, as playing motion sensors and spitfires will help keep you safe(r) while you snipe, and also discourage anyone trying to chase you as you relocate.

Transport of some kind can be quite useful, though not essential

    Rule 6
    There is NOOOOOOOOOOOO rule 6.

Rule 7 - Tools of the trade
I have 2 sniper loadouts at present. One is bolt driver / cycler, for general fighting, the other dual bolt driver for dedicated sniping. Both carry 50+ round of bolt driver ammor, medical applicator, BANK and a couple of tubes of juice.

Another useful loadout is adding an anti air/anti vehicle capability. The problem with this is the ammo constraints severely reduce the ammount of bolt driver rounds you can take.

Rule 8 - With a little help from my friends
A single sniper can be troublesome. A pair of snipers working as a co-ordinated team is lethal. By using voice communications to syncronise target and shot, you go from the target wounded to dead in a single volley.

Rule 9 - Predators and prey
The sniper has a number of natural enemies. Chief amongst these are cloakers, vehicles (including aircraft) and other snipers. I've already touched briefly on cloakers and ways to neutralise them. Another good rule of thumb is flick on your darklight and do a sweep every few rounds, especially if alone.

Without an effective means to drive off an aircraft or vehicle, snipers rarely win that battle. Anti armour weaponry can help, but the odds are still against you. The best defense against these is invisability. If there are air craft or vehicles operating nearby, get into cover till they leave.

Counter-sniping can be a very enjoyable challenge. Unless they prove otherwise, consider that the other guy knows just as much as you do, and act accordingly. Counter sniping generally comes into play most often during base defenses. As a sniper you should have a fair idea of where your counterparts will set up, and deploy to cover them accordingly.

And a couple of further points from one of the other outfit snipers

    - - - -

    Rule 10 - rambo style

the boltdriver is a huge damage dealer. 1 shot at a rexo takes him below half health, 1 shot at an agile takes him even lower. with practice the boltdriver can become the ideal indoor rambo style shotgun weapon as it will take just a sniper and a guy with cycler to deal with most standard infantry units. learn how the cone of fire guarentees near 100% hits on people at certain distances.. you will not hit all the time but it's damn effective if you do

Rule 11 - the hallway, the sniper and you

inside a base there are many places for snipers, be that defending a backdoor, the vehicle bay, corridors leading to and from spawns, areas near the cc. it follows the same rule as in open ground, learn the layout and position yourself at he best spot

my personal #1 rule is: be paranoid. check your surroundings for cloakers and enemy countersnipers trying to flank you, do reveal friendlies to see where your guys are pushing from if you cant see it etc.

    - - - - -

I agree with these points as well.

My most satisfying sniper kills have included 2 BFRs and 1 Liberator bomber :D

The biggest LOL for me in Planetside was an outfit Gal drop. Fully loaded gal to take over Wele, Ishundar. Little did we know we had a noob gal pilot...

The pilot hovered over wele and stopped so we could get to the roof cc nicely. We all dropped. I was last to drop, or was I... I could see everyone dropping, then I say the gal fall rite through me, and I was like, WTF. The Gal pilot bailed aswell!!!!11 The gal came down on the heads of everyone who dropped (cept me naturally and 2 others). Boy, that pilot would have gotten some major grief points if he wasnt in the outfit :D

Explain grief points to me .... I got some yesterday when a guy ran in front of me just when i clicked to fire when i was at 8x zoom sniping and another i didnt see at all because I was in a lightning (popping shells in over a wall and popped a guy)
do my grief points go down if someone shoots me? what happens when they get high? (what is considered high?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

You get grief if you damage a friendly infantry (so watch the splash weapons) or a friendly vehicle hits you (no, I've never understood the logic there either).

If your grief goes high enough, you get weapons lock, and cannot shoot.

Grief goes down over time, but I can't remember how fast.

I normally get it the same way you do ... someone running in front of me as I take my shot with the bolt driver. However, with engineer and adv med, I can always get them back up again :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

or a friendly vehicle hits you (no, I've never understood the logic there either).

The reason it happens is because you are obstructing the vehicle, like a wall for example. The vehicle hits you (a wall), thus the vehicle gets damage (very little at that).

There is no logic to it. Just another bugs among thousands that SOE have yet to fix, and prolly never will...

    HairyHeretic
    TR
    Last Line of Defense
BR25 CR4 (and occasionally working towards CR5, if no one else is after the CEP)

I do have a character on Emerald, but its been that long since I even looked at it I don't remember the name :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

Yeh Ive seen a few Last Line of Defence outfit members from time to time. Dont know much about ye though. I suppose you know of BRTD, once the biggest (or one of the biggest, HINT: -=APE=- :p ) zergfits on TR Werner. We only have 115 members now, and they are nice people. Letting me get CEP most of the time Im on, even though Im still only BR14.

Seems not many play PS on the boards. The only sence of Irish community I can see is the outfit "IRISH RENEGADES" on all 3 servers.

Also I get depressed when I look around on the PS forums, tales of how the game will end next year, as Sony are releasing funds from the game, and banning new fodder accounts. How long do you think it will last?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

Feel free to drop by our site if you want to chat to any of our group, or indeed any of the other TRA outfits.

    http://www.terranalliance.co.uk/

I've never really bothered with the official forums .. too much whining for the main :D

Its hard to say how long the game will last for. I'd say most of us doubt more than another year, two at the outside. It's a pity though, as I don't see any other game that would fill the same niche as Planetside.

What I'd love to see would be a Warhammer 40,000 game, done PS style. Maybe if Warhammer Online makes good money they'll try something like that next.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

If Im not mistaken, BRTD has recently joined TRA. We dont have a forum there as we have one already on Invision Free.

We got offered to join TRA when Ostekake (leader of Battle Marines of Choas) banned us from team speak.

He set up a router from spawns to veh pad in an orange alert base. Many broadcasts were made of what a dumbass decision that was. After many pleas to take it down, we started killing off the router pad in the spawns. Then after him repeatidly setting up the router pad, one of us boomer the **** out of the router itself.

Then we were banned from his ps-ts.net lol :D . He made an apology globally recently though, and let us back on TS, so fair play, I guess...

But I suppose we are still part of TRA now. Ill have to check that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

Heh. Yeah, I think everyone knows Oste, and his behaviour. :D

If you guys want to join us, we've usually got a a TRA squad or two going. LLOD and Leviathan squad up fairly frequently, and of course its easier when we're using the same TS channel.

I'll probably be on a bit later myself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

Only play weekends though, and no decent mic around da house as of yet
Not sure we are fully fledged members of TRA, and we are back now on ps-ts.net anyway.

Ok bit the bullet and tried it.

To download took insanely long on broadband. Starting it up was a bit slow as well but I guess it was doing some kind of optimisation.

TBH the game feels a lot like tribes with a few extra bits and bobs. The extra items that you can get if you pay monthly are nice (like the mechs) but there is nothing that I could see extraordinary that would make me pay monthly for it.

Graphics are a bit bland compared to some other MMO.

That said the action plays well, ping was at 140 despite being on broadband. :/

but I wouldn't pay monthly for it. Actually had a look at the price game card is E40 for 90 days. Thats very very expensive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,257 ✭✭✭hairyheretic

Well, if you stick with the free account, you don't need to pay for it. By the time you reach BR6 or 7 (can't remember what the max is on the free accounts) you should have enough cert points to try pretty much anything.

Playing with an organised squad also (IMO) gives you a better experience than running around solo. If nothing else you'll have people around to cover you, heal or resurrect you, and repair your armour :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 954 ✭✭✭DarthWraak

The max battle rank for free players is BR-6, which gives you a total of 11 cert points. That kept me going for a while until I got the nerve to buy the damn thing. My favourite cert loadout was this...

Medium Assault - Decent Weaponary in there
    Medical - To heal yourself
Engineering - To repair your armor
Air Cav, Scout - For quick and easy transport

You should make multiple characters, one to suit something different due to the lack of certs available. For example, one for Tank driving, one for MAX units, one for sniping, one for cloaking etc.

The game is dated (2003), so the graphics arn't the best. The reason I subbed is because I felt no other game available today comes close to the scale and sense of community that is persistant in Planetside :)

As for the game cards, dont look at them for price. If you subscribe for a single month, after you have bought the game (€18.99), it costs €12 a month. But it costs less again if you buys a few months together...

    1 month ......... €11.99
    3 month ......... €31.99
    6 month ......... €58.99
    12 month ......... €105.99

And I agree, the download was a pain. My broadband was going at full speed, but it took hours and hours to download. Dam slow servers tbh.

yea those prices look a bit more realistic.

TBH I Don't see enough in it to keep me playing.

The funny part I found though was this. I was on some map where we were the winning side and destroying the other team. We eventually locked the island. At that point everyone is worked up and said lets go to the next island.

So about 15 or so of us grabbed crafts and headed out. Hacked all the towers around the first base. We then hacked the base. Objective was to hold it.

2 mins later 3 ships come in from different directions and a total of 5 guys jumped out and proceeded to annilate the lot of us. It was like watching the terminator when he visits the police station. People where shooting them and nothing was happening.

Once killed one guy each headed out to a tower and proceeded to kill everyone in the towers and hack them back.

Everyone was seriously outmatched. But it was fun to watch how methodical the group was. Almost military like.

There's a few Irish playing on Werner! Ill keep and eye out for ye!!

Heh. Yeah, I think everyone knows Oste, and his behaviour. :D
Ostekake - is that muppet still playing Planetside? I recall one particular incident when the TR zerg had just taken a base from the NC. The NC promptly regain the nearby tower and unsuprisingly, the zerg begin to descend on the tower.

The muppet starts spamming the comm channels, warning his fellow zerglings to hold off attacking the tower and wait until the base timer has completed; since command XP is calculated on the number of enemies in the local SOI, if TR held off retaking the tower until the base timer is complete, the command xp reward would have been greatly improved.

Fair enough i thought, however trying to instruct the zerg to do *anything* let alone stop attacking is akin to asking a revear pilot to *not* rocketspam lone infantry. Well, the zerg ignore him and begin to congregate outside the tower, Ostekake then threatens to OS the tower attackers. When the zerg attack, Ostakake and a few of his outfit mates, OS everything outside of the tower.

The chat window was flooded with multiple TK messages - i'm sure the NC must have been bewildered as to what the hell just happened outside of their tower

That story wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

We did have some peace when he went off to play WoW for a bit, but he is back, and pretty much the same as he ever was. We pay about as much attention to him as we ever did too :D
