The Sub Championships Return!

Finally, after a lot of toing and froing, I'm able to host another National Submission Championships.

    When: May 13th, 2006

Where: UCD Sports Centre, Belfield, Dublin 4 (same place as last year and Dublin leg of the MMA League)

I'll have entry forms out by the end of the week along with a full list of rules but it will be essentially the same as last year: Round Robin, Sub or Draw (with the Riley Choke being the coolest of all subs! :D )

    Weight Categories:

    62Kg
    68Kg
    75Kg
    83Kg
    92Kg
    +92Kg

All these weights are under the weight indicated. So if you're in 75Kg division and you weight in at 74.99 you're okay, 75.00, you're moved up a weight class. Those in the heavyweight division need not weigh in.

    Experience Divisions:
    -6months, -12months, +12months.

Please put down the month you started training on your application, if there's enough people who've been training +18 or +24 months in weight categories we'll run another division. Last year the 75Kg and 83Kg experienced divisions were pretty big.

I'm sure I've left a lot out but most of the info for the last comp is on my other computer and I wanted to get this out as soon as I knew. Sorry to all who've been in limbo for the last while. Now start training!

For any questions please post here or email me colm[at]twokingsmma.net

If someone has access to a board where most of the Northern Irish clubs train could they please repost that message.

    Later,
    Colm

This is going to be fun trying to lose 8kg by may with a trapped nerve in my spine :D Eating this big greasy fry-up isn't going to help either.

    Hey Reilly,

If I started training 24 months ago but was injured for 5 months i.e. overall 19 months, do I compete in 18+ or 24+???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Oh to cut to 75 or to keep my sanity at 83? Don't think my missus can tolerate hearing "damn I'd love some chocolate/spuds/pasta/noodles" any more.

in keeping with the tone of the posts above I would like to moan about the -92 kilo cut off for LHW also! Damn pumkin seeds!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

What would Matt Furey think of you Mark? I bet you haven't done one single Hindu Pushup all day!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

What I find about seed eating is that it's great for about 3 days. You're like "oh this is great I'm so frickin healthy and I'm going to hit my weight too". Then after that each one tastes like you're eating a pebble. Ugh.
I think I'll have a bang at -75kg for a while. But that said, last time I cut weight was about 2 years ago!!!! Aw crap. This is going to be hard isn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭mark.leonard

It is going to be soo hard, better be worth it!
*gets off chair to start doing hindu push ups*

Well cutting has always served two purposes for me. 1) I tend to train harder, I don't know why I just do. And 2) it annoys the hell out of my wife which I think is great fun. :D

Actually Mark, I've just realised. Since the categories are +12 months, if you stick to the seeds, and I chow down on the chinese, we could probably meet at 92kgs!! :D

Sweet. I'll spend May bulking up to 83, the Judo Mick way -

"You'll want to focus on the neglected food groups such as the whipped group, the congealed group and the chocotastic!"

If you want to test a piece of food, rub it against a piece of paper, if the paper goes clear, then it's your window to weight gain!

    I'm looking forward to it.

Is there ever much people in the 62kg ,6month category?

Are there any subs that are not allowed? (Not that I can do them but I'd like to know!)

    Cheers

I think twisting leg locks, small joint manipulation, chins in the eye, spine locks & neck cranks were illegal last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,857 ✭✭✭Valmont

Thanks, I can't do them anyway. What about the foot guillotine, I think it's an achilles lock? Are they considered twisting leg locks?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

Achilles hold doesn't twist.. Only a heel hook or a toe hold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

Straight leg locks such as the achilles lock and kneebar are fine, as are twisting ankle locks.

Basically the rule is against heel hooks and variations on them - anything that puts twisting pressure on the knee, rather than the ankle.

That's as far as I know from last year anyway - I'm sure Colm will give us the full lowdown on any changes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

I reffed in the U65kg beginners last year and all leg and ankle locks were banned.

Whether the +6 months counts as beginner will be explained on the day.

Any chance of an open weight/absolute division this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 185 ✭✭waterford mma

any news on when we can get our hands on application forms? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

    Hey,

For some reason I can't get access to update 2KMMA so I've uploaded the entry form to cleverlittlemonkeys.com/nsc2006.xls

Also, people can email colm[at]twokingsmma.net and I'll send you out a form.

As anyone who organises tournaments knows late entries are an endless source of hassle, so bear in mind there's a late entry penalty with the NSC. You have until May 5th to get your entries in and pay the regular price. This is just under five weeks so you've no excuse.

I'm still searching for the rules from last year to save myself having to write them out again but they'll be the same anyway. Posters such as JudoMick, Clive, mark.leonard and Columok were all refs last year so they know the score.

If I've left anything else out let me know.

    Colm

    No problem. Happy to help.

    And *BUMP*

Only one week left to avail of the early entry discount (€20 for adults), entries received after May 5th will pay €25. Get those entries in.

Email colm[at]twokingsmma.net or snail mail (address available on entry forms).

If anyone has addresses of clubs that wouldn't be on JK's ATG mailing list can they forward on notification. Also, fighttalk.co.uk seems to be down at the mo, anyone else having this same problem.

Yep, that's the plan anyway! Better actually do some training this week. :) Only a few of us from UL, it's exam time around here.

That's why the Good Lord invented repeats!

The Shane has decided to let people enter on the day, since he's in charge of weigh ins and registrations.

10am Doors open and we hope to have the rules meeting at 11am, competition starting straight after.

If you've weighed in and you're hanging around you'll get to see a chance of the future with the junior division kicking off before the seniors.

    Roper will be there!
    Hopefully with some Junior Ropers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,799 ✭✭✭Clive

I'll be there, sitting by the scales with a bag of doughnuts, smiling smugly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

Weigh Ins 10am in Hall C (that's the small hall between the two larger courts.)

JudoMick and Clive will be there to take your weight and mark either "W" or "T" on your hand. You then proceed to The Shane and register (and pay if needs be). Please do not get weighed and leave the hall without speaking to Shane!

Oh and as a bonus incentive for anyone who's missed Jim, he'll be there with the impressive title of Supreme Commander of Timekeepers & Officials.

Any directions, last minute rule checks etc feel free to ring me at 086-8151092
Since I don't have to make weight I'm off to eat a block of butter.

I'm going to make an appearance. Won't be competing as I'm out of shape/overweight haven't trained enough.. But if there are spare mats, I'll roll with all of you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,282 ✭✭✭Kent Brockman

Surely the point is to go in at your own natural weight and compete against your own level/size of opponent?
What is the point in losing a load of weight just to prove you can beat(or not) someone who is naturally smaller/lighter than you?

    My Two Cents......

Beat up your little brother,to prove you can handle a smaller man,and then go down to UCD and pick on someone your own size !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

Combat sports have a strength to weight ratio.

If I walk around at 71Kg and fight at 65Kg I'm stronger relative to my weight than staying at 71Kg.

What you're losing is "useless" weight. Fat just makes you slower and more inefficient since your muscles have to move around all that blubber rather than having your weight made up of lean body tissue.

The ability to manage your weight is another facet of combat sports. Frequently you'll have people who walk around at a weight 5-10% over their fighting weight.

To look at it another way, if I'm 85Kg should I try to lose 2Kg and compete in the 83Kg division, where I'll be at the top of my weight class (where most competitors are) or should I stay at 85 and fight people up to 7 Kg heavier than me?
