road running - trouble with dogs

    Hi,

I run on some lovely country roads that I have more or less to myself for nearly 8 miles - the trouble is there are quite a few dogs living on my route, I often get chased, and the other night I actually couldn't get past because there were several of the stupid animals blocking the road and eyeing me up as though they were going to have me for dinner.

Do any of you have similar issues? Have you been able to sort it out? Is there some sort of device I could buy to scare them off? Or should I just change my route? (There were a lot of canine activity tonight and my run turned into quite a useful fartlek session)

people are starving to death in the world and all I have to worry about is getting chased by a few dogs!

It can be very annoying, If they are only terriers, I kick them in the head when they go for you, otherwise you'll have to find another route if they are biggger dogs

A spray bottle with a little tabasco sauce watered down a little will sort out most dogs.

If they are small dogs just run at them, they'll run away, or just start walking towards them.

If they are big fellas with studded collars, run for your life.

Most dogs will shy away if you pick up a stone/rock and look like you're about to fire it at them.

This probably won't work on a "bad" dog but IME there aren't many of them wandering about.

Wasn't it the road runner who had a problem with the coyote?

May I suggest a night in with some Warner Bros dvds and you'll find plenty of ways of avoiding them.

    Meep meep :D

Kick my dog in the head and i'll cut your genitals off.

To be honest lads, you can tell the mad dogs from normal ones. Don't worry about it. Just because a dog barks and runs at you doesn't mean it is going to bite you...it's a sign of nervousness on the dogs part...just act confident and stand up to it. Trust me.

Contact the Dog Warden in the local authority. They will have a word with the owners to keep their dogs under control.

Never run from a dog!! no point.. you can never outrun a big dog. Just ignore them or stare in the eye and run towards them.. at the end of the day Dogs know humans are their masters so unless he has his master there to protect or egg him on he will give!!!

They are just protecting their territory but will back off in most cases.. and if not.. the dog has to be destroyed. Any Dog that attacks a person has to be put down!

I find putting steak down my pants and rashers in my socks deters them. You should have no problem. If you can get your hands on a bitches feremones and rub it on your ear it should do the trick too.
