Can anyone explain what an Insulin spike is?

I know it's caused by sugary things but how does it affect you?

Insulin is a storage hormone - it shuttles nutrients into muscles and what's left over is turned to fat.

It is produced, spiked, in response to sweetness. Therefore, if you take sugars you get an insulin spike. The result of this is that if you have nutrients in your system to be stored, the spike will do this.

Downside is that it also stores fat, so taking fats with carbs, especially sugars, makes you store fat easier.

Creating an insulin spike post workout helps store the protein, carbs and creatine in post workout drink which helps recovery and growth.

Si it's important to take something sugary as well as protein in your post workout drink to get the protein absorbed?

It helps! I use grape juice, raisins and banana, have detailed in other threads why.
