Ireland Vs England "The decider?"

I can't believe there is not a thread on this yet

    The Teams

Ireland: Murphy; Horgan, O'Driscoll (capt), D'Arcy, Trimble; O'Gara, Stringer; Horan, Flannery, Hayes; O'Connell, O'Kelly; Easterby, Wallace, Leamy.
Replacements: R Best, S Best, O'Callaghan, O'Connor, Reddan, Humphreys, Dempsey.

England: Voyce; Cueto, Noon, Abbott, Cohen; Goode, Ellis; Sheridan, Mears, White; Borthwick, Shaw; Worsley, Moody, Corry (capt).
Replacements: Thompson, Freshwater, Grewcock, Dallaglio, Dawson, Walder, Tindall.

So can England gel with all the changes they made?
Can the Irish back line deliver the performance that we know it is capable of?
Can we beat England and results depending win our first Championship in 21 years?
Can Wales do us a favour and beat the French?

Personally I think it is about time our backline stopped looking like a world class backline and started performing like one.

I think England will have continuity issues with all their changes.

Fingers crossed we can get over our mental block about winning things and pull out a super performance.

Hmmm....It'll be interesting to see...on paper and form we should win this one, hence the undesired favourite tags we've been given in the media and bookies.

I'll be interested to see if we finaly have the rocks to step up to the plate in a high pressure game and play beyond ourselves, or, as seems to be par for the course, we will come out in a high pressure game and crumble from the off and not offer a whimper of resistance when it matters the most.

It's a real test of how far we've come since the "decider" against England in lansdowne road back in '03 when we sufferd (iirc) our record defeat in the history of the test. Or France in the WC when a potential cracker of a game ended up with only 1 team on the pitch.

It's now time to see if we can compete when it matters, and I think we will.

I think there will be a big backlash for England from the France game and they have a serious point to prove. They'll come out of the traps at a hundred miles an hour, and if we don't get into the pace and physicality of the game from the off however, we will be blown away.

As for Wales Vs France, I don't expect anything other than a comfortable France win, but if there was ever a 6N for upsets, it's this one, so you never know, we'll see what happens.

(If France win, as far as i know, we have to beat England by 29 more points than France beat Wales...so not that likely)

There's a decent chance of us beating England I guess, but I really can't see France losing to Wales. Fingers crossed though.

even championship aside if we beat england then we will hold the first ever actual triple crown, and will have beaten england 3 years in a row, twice away. That will be good enough for me.

Like DubGuy said, I don't think the tag of favourites is a good one for this Irish team. We are inconsistent at the best of times and I think England will be stung by their poor performances and criticism in the competition to date. They are going to be dangerous, no doubt about that, but the 7 changes is bound to hinder their continuity. If O'Gara and the front 5 play well, Ireland will will win.

Just on paddypower.com there and they are offerin odds of 16-1 on Paul O'Connell being voted Man of the Match Today, given his previous performances so far this season that could be a good bet :)

Hope Henson has a good half and gets a try setting ireland up for the championship. My brother is at the game, flew over this morning after a night on the gargle. Hope he's a chance to get a nap before kick off!

Beating England in Twickenham by 34 points is just going to mission impossible tbh. Dont get me wrong I would love it if they manage to beat England.

    8-5 to ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭Teg Veece

8-11 to ireland at half time. A fair reflection i suppose. England are playing some cynical enough rugby at the break down though. Lets hope those "last passes" finally start sticking for ireland in the second half.

Talk about the luck of the Irish, a try that was'nt then a try that was by an inch or 3! I reckon Horgan has kept Eddie in his job, dispite the fact Ireland would have finished second in the table anyway.

    Mike.

    Wow...!

Best game of rugby I've seen in a long time! Heart in mouth most of the time and beating faster than I thought possible ... still hasn't slowed down much! What a match! What a finish!

...And the first triple crown trophy finds its home in Ireland... NICE!

    Andy Goode?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,211 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

Goode? Are you taking the piss? His kicking cost England the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,646 ✭✭✭cooker3

What a finish, last minute winning try against the old enemy in Twickenham, doesn't get much better then that :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,252 ✭✭✭Funkstard

You taking the piss it was the fat lump of lard who miraculously ended up with an extra 0 on the back of his shirt? Ah well, nothing is going to dampen this day. And WHAT A ****ING DAY!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

Ya it was Goode , that selection (which was by one of the BBC commentators , who Keith Woods pointed out was very pro English) was made after Goode had kicked what appeared to have been the winning kick for England . Of course that didn't stop me from ROFL as I had remembered (unlike that commentator) what Goode had done for most of the match . At best he was average .
