Alanya's sold the best kebab in Dublin. They claimed their schwarmas were the best in the world. But now it looks like it has closed! What's going on?

Man, everybody knows that Zaytoon do the best kebab in town

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

No no no. They come a close second! Their bread isn't quite thick enough. Alanya's sauces are (were?) superior too.

Do (Did?) they have good falafel?

    Also, where is this Alanya's?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭Kinetic^

Never had one but basically what I said is true. Zaytoon do the best kebab in town.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

It is (was?) beside the Foggy Dew at the Central Bank. Falafels are for wimps!

    I've been in Zaytoon's before.

Hey, I'm vegetarian, but I still kick any amount of ass.

    ATTACK IRAQ!

Well my brothers and cousins and stuff all go on about Iskanders on Dame Street, but I got a kebab there the other night and thought it was a bit dry :/

Dunno, a kebab's not really a kebab unless it's got sauce spilling out the end onto your shoes.......!

    Iskander's is amazing.

I thought this thread was about something else entirely
and was going to say about the one I was shown at a party in
Rathmines that looked like a busted sofa

    Zaytoon
    Athenas
    Iskanders

    in that order

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

No no no NO! You have obviously never experienced an Alanya's. And maybe you never will! But

    Alanya's
    Zaytoon
    Athena's
    Iskander's

    in that order

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭shroomfox

Nah, anybody who says that falafel is for wimps doesn't know what they're talking about.

I'm sticking with Iskander's and Zaytoon.

What about that tiny one on baggot street? Smallest kebab shop in Dublin? Yes. Best kebab in Dublin? I don't know, but I've heard good things about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 280 ✭✭shroomfox

Actually I think I've been in Alanya's. Wasn't impressed. Bread was too thick.

    That Ismaels place??

Anyway i'd have to with the popular consensus on this Alanyas or Zaytoon both do a legend kebab.

Zaytoon FTW i get my weekly cheat meal in there so good and iskanders is a close second.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

Would you listen to this fella, "bread was too thick"! Ya wimp ya. Proper bread. Worlds best schawarma as it used to say. They even left out the apostrophe too.

    The badly packed variety?;)

Where is this Zaytoon & Athena's
And please list where they are if you mention more.

I got an alright one in a place near whelans, proper traditional place.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

    Stick to the kebabs.

Alanyas is my favourite, lovely stuff. Place is only closed for a little refurbishment, thankfully.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

And there's a new branch of Zaytoon's open on Camden street now...they must be coining it...

    Zaytoon
    Athenas
    Iskanders

    in that order

i would agree with that list.

i however have never been in Alanya's. But as far a the bread goes i think Zaytoon's is plenty thick.

    @NewOxfordReview
    lash up a poll.

Iskanders isn't a patch on Zaytoon

    Zaytoons are my favourite.

How dare you blaspheme the fine chicken schwarma. A pox on you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Yeah ok I give you Zaytoons, nice Kebabs and convenient seats to flip off the police on horse backs as they stroll by, but i'm surprised nobody has mentioned "the Sultan" on georges street? Best Kebabs around, the guy who serves you looks like he hasn't showered/shaved in weeks and is vaguely reminiscent of the guy who served homer crab juice, the place also has a real dingy yellow colour scheme to boot. But the best kebabs around. Damn it I want one now... although I have to say i've never eaten there sober.

"mmm sweaty meat on a stick"

Another good spot is Istanbul on Baggot Street, used to be an Abrakebabras but this place is a vast improvement. Try the mix schwarma, quite excellent. Brenadan O Connor did a very positive review in the Sunday Independent a good while back.

odd that, but true, the best chippers are usually filthy places with fat sweaty italians. I avoid clean ones, something strange about them, never had a decent portion in a clean chipper, they try and be a cross between a chipper & mcdonalds and end up crap.

I had one in Momo's on Liffey Street last week and was fairly impressed.

The staff are a bit on the surly side though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭NewOxfordReview

Momo's serve a massive portion. A bit more expensive than other places though. I found the staff quite friendly, maybe they were just having a bad day.

I have been told the place beside Quinns off-license in Drumcondra has the best kebabs. Haven't had one though. Don't know the name of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

i have. didn't really like it. not too fond of lamb. also, the kebab place in Leixlip used to be an abrakestabra too. they changed the name, but it's still a dive. you are guaranteed a fight if you go anywhere near it on a saturday night.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,244 ✭✭✭drdre

iskanders and zaytoon, are nice as they are fresh . most of kebab places in dublin use (crap meat)which i would never go near.

Had 21 every year I've been on earth probably!

Oh yeah - Zaytoon no 1, though I'm gonna try that Alanyas pretty soon I reckon!
Some Like it Hot - Drumcondra Rd...bit more like yer normal burger/chipper/kebaber but well above the average.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

inspired by this thread I just went and made myself some kebabs.

    A word to the wise:

never... ever eat kebabs made by monkeyfudge

Used to very popular until the owner was convicted of slapping his girlfriend about the place and his picture was all over the newpapers. Incidently the girlfriend also worked there. Great kebabs!!
