I was reading about using eggs as a source for protein, is it better to have them raw, as in egg whites or to cook?

It shows character that you would even think of actually eating them raw - but cook it. Risk to benefit ratio of eating raw eggs is high.

Best way if not eaten raw i find is poaching egg whites. If you have to eat them raw you would have to boil the raw egg to destroy the bacteria but im still not sure how safe even boiling them is. So poach them!

I've been eating raw eggs for about 15 years now and I've never had any problem so I wouldn't let the risk bother you as mentioned by t-ha. I usually just blend them with some milk, a couple of bananas and a dash of kahlua for taste.

Yeah but raw eggs is also just gross:( . I mean if you're worried about the amount of aminos you're losing by cooking it then just eat an extra one, it's not like they're that expensive. Plus I've seen a guy on Sky One once on Britain's Hardest Pubs who had been eating ground glass for 20 years - still doesn't make it a good idea. You can get salmonella from raw eggs, even if instances are rare (numbers vary from 1 in 50 to 1 in 30000 affected eggs depending on your source) it's still a risk, and the benefit is not much over nil so I don't see the point.

I don't really like cooked eggs, there's a valid point for me not eating one. It a fast and easy way to eat eggs too. Plus I don't really get your point about it being gross, I don't think it's gross. Scrambled egg, now that's gross.

Fair enough - to each their own :)

raw egg protein does not assimilate as well as cooked. now not overcooked/denatured protein but just lightly. that means no brown on omelettes for example.

the risk of salmonella poisoning is also waay higher.

and don't forget the yolks. it is very naive to think all the goodness is in the whites.(another bodybuilding myth) more fat yes. more cholesterol yes. also more protein for example and lots of other good stuff. read up. use usda sr17 food database to analyse the nutrients of eggs/whites/yolks yourself

usda.com? i think has a free program if you dont have compeat or somesuch

    what fantastic randomness!!!

ok, just to clear the whole egg thing up.

There IS a risk of salmonella poisoning from eating raw eggs, although the risk is minimal. Once an egg is cooked for 70 degrees C or over for 2 minutes or more there is no risk of contracting Salmonella.

As RPGGAMER pointed out, the yolk of an egg should not be overlooked. Egg whites are basically made up of water and protein, not much else. Yolks contain about 50% of the overall protein content of an egg, as well as high levels of vitamins and minerals such as Vit A, D, Riboflavin, phosphorous, selenium and zinc. Don't forget, a yollk must contain all the nutrients necessary for a chick to develop to a stage where it is a fully functional individual, and must therefore be righ in the 'building block' macromolecules for a developing higher level organism. It does contain fats, but they are mostly good fats- approximately 11% of an egg’s fatty acids are polyunsaturated, 44% monounsaturated and only 29% saturated.

Cooked eggs are easier to digest than raw eggs and are therefore kinder to the stomach. The cooking process begins the denaturation that breaks down proteins to their composite amino acids leaving less work for your stomach enzymes (called proteases) to have to do.

So, eggs are good. No, eggs are great. Just like everything else in your diet, eat them in moderation. Scrambled, poached, boiled (hard and soft), its all good. Just not fried- there's really no excuse for all that excess grease. ;)

For a good fried egg substitute get a side plate give it a light coat of butter crack your egg onto it, into the microwave for 30s ta da one fried egg no grease

How very hardcore of you. Personally I wouldn't though. I'ld find out what about eating a sheep's heart is so good and find something not gross that does it as well or better. For example I think eating raw eggs is gross, I'ld rather cook them and still make the same/better gains. I think sometimes people misinterpret the idea of 'no pain, no gain' as 'more pain = more gain' which isn't always true.

But don't cook an egg in its shell in the microwave - it explodes...

This can be applied to some rather boring parties to liven them up, half a dozen eggs 10min defrost setting instant hilarity:D

Spot on. I know endless people who have made fantastic gains without resorting to raw eggs, sheeps heart, tuna and coke shakes and human sacrifice.

Sure, if the psychological benefit to you is there then do what it takes, but just don't assume that everyone needs that!!! :D

of course i exaggerate but most do need more discipline in nutrition. 99%
where i train out of 100 guys you might get one who has good nutrition now this includes athletes too, in large numbers! most folk need more discipline.me incl. noone is a monk here, i think

you see eating these outlandish foods is not just good for the health/training but it also more importantly, i believe, psychologically it reinforces not just eating for pleasure. it doesnt matter if there is a bit of machoism there inititially as long as the habit is started and kept. or try the velocity diet on t-nation.

I just hate the smell, the consistency and the taste. Eating the egg raw in a milkshake is easy to drink. It just makes the shake a little thinker, that's all.

Jesus, that sounds awful. What's the point in the coke? Is there not better things to mix it with?

No reason at all, just an extreme example of what people have done is all.
