New On-Screen look for TV3

TV3 have re-vamped their on-screen presentation style. Graphics have more 'rounded' edges and it's generally a nicer look. BUT, the on-screen dog is much more obtrusive, in my opinion, appearing as a solid blob with a transparent '3' in the middle. Any thoughts?

Only caught Ireland AM, which had no TV3 branding and was still 4:3. Has it gone widescreen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,824 ✭✭✭Charles Slane

The ads are widescreen on Sky.

Just had a look at the website now too. I don't know if the TV3 News graphics have changed with the rest today, having changed fairly recently. But I notice that the website main page seems to be still showing the News graphic from before the last change. Though I could be wrong.

Yep terrible DOG, however at least they have it in the correct possition, maybe they could share the secret with RTÉ

Nothing at all done with TV3 News, in fact. Unfortunately...

My first thoughts on hearing about this new look was "1990s Channel 4". But my first thoughts on seeing it in action was "ABC1". Same use of wierd colours and circles, along with a jingle to represent TV3. I'm not sure who does it better, having only seen one TV3 ident so far. At least the "three" whisper we have had since day one is finally gone.

i wonder if they still have that annoying 3 is the magic number song

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

    Yes, they do!

It was on this morning, in widescreen and with the new DOG.

Anyone get screengrabe of their output in Widescreen?

    Paddy :D

just saw the site now; is that it?? the three is in a circle?!!
On screen, do they show the three circles like on the site??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,539 ✭✭✭JohnC.

The DOG doesn't have the 3 circles, just the last one with the 3 in it.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

so it's the exact same logo as before, but in a circle?

How much money did they waste on this rebrand? I know it's not my money, I'm just interested to see how much they're willing to spend on this crap instead of decent programming.
I hope their new owners change the name of the station and force a proper rebranding!

Oh no, it's so much more than that! The old logo was a white 3. The new logo is a white circle with a transparent 3 in it! Completely different and GREAT value for money.
    ;)

    What dog?
    Digital Onscreen Graphic

Or some say Digitally Originated Graphics.

Whatever. Does for eyes what Wet Dog on rug at fire does for nose.

Kahless, you caught your jumper on the fence last night, your Sacasm is showing :)

It is OUR money. The advertising makes the products WE buy more expensive. At one time Kellogs spent more on Advertising than ALL the other cereal companies together in Europe.

the font used on the promos is pleasing on the eye

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

yeah; it's a nice font, maybe they could have been really bold and used it to spell out their name:
    tv:three or something like that..
Is that a unique font or lifted from somewhere?

On the subject of DOGs, I seem to remember, a long time ago, that they were being called "Bugs." But this was on an American show where I heard it. So is Bug what Americans call DOGs? Or were they universally called Bugs before, but some PR person decided that Bug was a bad name because they were bugging people?

Yeah, because Dogging someone has much better connotations... :D

    TV3 NEWS RELEASE
    IMMEDIATE:
    Monday 6th March 2006

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE HAPPEN IN THREES

    TV3 LAUNCHES BRAND NEW LOOK

TV3, Ireland's first independent television network launched an advertiser supported, national, free-to-air, entertainment and information service on 21st September 1998, providing news and information, sport, entertainment, comedy, movies, drama, documentaries and children's programming.

Today, TV3 is the second most watched channel in Ireland and has been for several years. The network has developed its brand since launching in 1998 and just launched a fresh new look Monday 6th March 2006. Working with London-based television design specialists Turquoise, TV3 continues to develop the on-air and off-air brand with a striking new look that plays on '3' as a visual metaphor.

On the launch of TV3's new look Director of Programming Matthew Salway said: "This re-brand marks the greatest change to our on screen look for years. It is timely, fresh and exciting and makes a substantial contribution to the channel's on-going development."

It looks alot better then it did but nothing major. Kind of pointless.

Does that 3 design look really, what is the word, antiquated these days, or is that just me?

Overall I reckon TV3's looking pretty good, the music on the idents is clever and the DOG is working most of the time on Digital - they've had teething problems but these seem to be sorted out. I preferred the old DOG but other than that it's looking well. It's good to see that the opening/closing sequence has survived and that t's 16:9.

On Monday, they opened half an hour earlier and aired the same episode of Popcorn Bitesize twice along with lots of promos. Does that happen often?

Isn't that when they started both the new look and widescreen? Perhaps just a final on-air test.

Yeah, I would agree with that.

But how is this a re-brand? Are fresh and exciting the only words in TV3 vocab? What on-going development the schedule hasn't changed since 2001 and that change only happened because of ITV.

At least they go Everyone Hates Chris on Monday nights.

They must have paid a fair bit for 'Everybody Hates Chris'.

    Yeah, that being the re-development!
I really like tv3, but... i prefer the old news and the old logo and indends, it looks less professional these days, and the news was the classist thing they had!!!
I guess next up for the change is Ireland AM

Hehe, I agree, but that would mean they'd have to make some decent programming to fulfil their license terms!
