no they won't. the only way to 'bulk up' is to get fat (bad bulk) or add muscle (good bulk), neither of which is achieved doing step aerobics. And one more time for the record...

Women cannot bulk up even with weights due to their lack of testosterone. Lets just say female bodybuilders aren't relying on their own hormones ot achieve their looks..

Step aerobics is a high-intensity cardiovascular activity that increases your heart rate and your metabolism thereby temporarily increasing the rate at which your body burns calories i.e. you lose weight.

Why are women so concerned with bulking up? Where has this myth come from? As g'em says, lask of testosterone in our systems prevents this from happening.

Step aerobics will do you good, especially if you work hard in the class. Go for it

It was a trainer [man btw] who told me that. I know when Ive had to be careful in dance not to get overdeveloped calf muscles, and I've seen some women dancers get them. And we do have some androgens no? So we can bulk more than we think?

Well I'm aware that dancers can have pretty crazy ideals for what's bulky and what's not, and I think they traditionally made use of pilates style training and plyometrics to gain the performance abilities they needed with minimal size - however I still don't think step aerobics will be a problem for you. Apart from anything else, muscle growth is typically a slow enough process (apart from newbie gains) so you'll see any changes happening. Also, it's not permanent, you will lose the muscle again quite quickly if you stop doing whatever built it up. Particularly if it hasn't been around for long.

What is your aim for this exercise anyway (body composition/strength for dancing/both)?

Another way to burn calories. That's what Im really interested in these days.

I do take pilates sometimes and dance regularly, which includes a hefty workout itself, with over 150 crunches in the warm up. Pushups, etc.....

    Im also thinking about spinning...

well there you go, mystery solved :p

there's really no such thing as 'overdeveloped' but calves can get slightly larger and quite pronounced alright. But tbh, a nicely shaped calf looks amazing on a toned pair of legs, most women would kill for them. And yes, we do have androgens, but our levels of test are about a tenth of those of our oestrogen and therefore nowhere near enough to get to a 'bodybuilding' look. 'Big' non-training women are usually just carrying extra body fat.

Agreed, I keep trying to tell them but they just keep saying "Who the hell are you?" or "I'm NOT fat! Hey come back here! Give me back my bagel you PHYSCO!" or "Why are you in the ladies room?".

Just can't get through to some people... :D

Metrovelvet - I'ld say step aerobics or spinning would both be fine. Obviously all the usual hoo-ha about calorie intake being important too etc.
