what do you mean apparently? Is your source reliable on this?

On early news this morning (either 2fm or fm104) there was a report of dead birds. They all have to die at some stage so no need to over react. Tests are being carried out

I've not had much access to the news so I'm not to sure what exactly it means.

Its potentialy terminal if you eat an infected chicken etc. isn't it? Or do you just drop dead

    Key Facts

    * If birds catch it they have a very high chance of dying.
    * Birds can spread it to other birds.
    * Birds can spread it to humans who also have a very high chance of dying when they catch it.
    * Humans in ireland are unlikely to catch it unless they happen to be living in very close contact to infected birds.
    * Humans can't spread it to other humans. Its still pretty unlikely this will happen despite all the scaremongering
    * We are not fúcked

& it CAN NOT be contracted from eating cooked Chicken so stop panicking.

you have to be in regular close contact with chickens, that is their saliva, droppings etc & then not wash your hands before putting them in your mouth or on your food.

The risk of humans catching bird flu is extremely rare.

If you look at the cases in Asia etc, they were practically living with the chickens in poor hygiene conditions.

    Stop panicking people.
Enjoy you cooked chicken products, just be extra vigilant when cooking them

    What caused the rumour?

The last time a minor nationwide birdflu panic was caused by a presumptious farmer in Kilcoole who saw a dead bird on the beach.

There is no danger of people getting the disease from infected poultry provided it is properly cooked.:)

The danger is not Bird Flu itself. Scientists are worried that someone will catch Avian Flu and the regular human strain of flu at the same time and they will mutate to form a much more lethal and infectious form of flu that can be passed on from human to human.

Up to November '05 there were 184 cases of infections in humans, resulting in 85 deaths (Source), so there is about a 50-50 chance of survival if you catch it.

This particular bird was found dead on a certain golf course. After much panicing, and cordoning off of areas etc. it was established that the bird died after being hit, mid air, by a golf ball.

Reminds me of this (from a few years back):

One farmer was talking to another farmer, and asked "So do you think there is a risk of us humans catching mad cow disease" and the other farmer replied "Nah, shouldn't think so, not if you use a condom".

Don't Panic! The worst it will do is effect the bird industry economically. ie: Organic chickens will need to be housed, thereby no longer legally salebale as "Organic".

If the chicken is cooked its fine. And yes, you need to be living in very unsanitary conditions with infected birds. I saw a photo in New Scientist of an asian man with his fighting cock. His prize cock was injured in a fight and the photo showed the man sucking a bleeding neck wound on the bird...seriously!!!

now THAT is how you get transfer from an infected bird to a human!!!!!

I'm not worried about this. IMO it's the media making a huge fuss over it.

Remember SARS was supposed to wipe out all of humanity?
