    I've been reading this board for ages now and have gotten loads of great diet advice. I see people talking about adding whey to things. So what is and why use it?

    Isnt it the liquid part of gone-off milk? As in 'curds and whey'

    Whey protein is the name for a collection of globular proteins that can be isolated from whey, a by-product of cheese manufacture from cow's milk. It is a mixture of beta-lactoglobulin (~65%), alpha-lactalbumin (~25%), and serum albumin (~8%), which are soluble in their native forms, independent of pH.

    Whey is a fast acting protein in which the protein is delivered into your body within 20-30 mins and is ideally used for post-workouts.

    exactly. whey is just a supplement that many weight trainers and athletes use to make sure they get the required amount of protein in their daily diet. Its low in calories, fat and carbs, so you can get high quality protein (which will help build muscle) without sacrficing your other dietary needs. It can be used both to gain weight and lose weight depending on how you use it to supplement your diet.

    Not sure, but possibly because muscle requires more energy to sustain itself, so building up more muscle with whey will cause your body to burn more fat to "feed" the muscle...maybe... I seem to remember reading something along those lines. (You may not actually lose weight (muscle > fat and all) but will tone up).

    Some of them have very very low carbs and pretty much no fat so can be used as part of a hight protien diet it will also help you sustain Muscle when you are cutting fat

    1) muscle is an 'active' tissue, that is, your body will burn calories by simply maintaining it so a higher % of muscle mass will increase your metabolism. Fat will not burn any calories.

    2) A gram of fat requires about 4 calories of energy to 'break down', whereas protein requires about 20 cals/ gram, i.e. fat gets stored much more readily than protein.

    3) As mentioned whey protein is low in carbs, low in fat so you can use it to give your body the calories (energy) it needs without running as high a risk of the energy not being used and stored. It keep syou full up and less likely to snack on other foods.
