Seen them all, to be honest, it's a great weight, but it's not the insane weight that the world is making it out to be.

If the gym had heavier dumbells Ronnie would really set people talking!

awww, Ronnie's such a big ol' teddybear, you just wanna cuddle him :D

What are good body weight to lifting weight ratios? Jonathan Edwards the Triple Jumper was 70kg and could bench 122kg and clean 150kg. Anyone else know of mainstream sportpeople who could lift savage weights? Apparently, Christian Cullen could bench more than anyone in the All-Blacks pack back in the day.

Imagine if you have a look at pretty much any pro powerlifting sites, you will find huge weights being lifted by small guys. As for other sports men, Josh Lewsey (sp ) and Peter Stringer are two small enough guys who strenght i have heard great things about.

Nairn Süleymanoğlu "the Pocket Hercules": 60kg class, clean & jerk: 190kg
    (that's a bodyweight x 3 + 10kg for fun, cleaned & jerked).

Jaysus that hardcore but could the "Pocket Hercules" triple jump 60feet(18.29m). Dave Reddin, fitness coach to the Englisg Rugby team (and the Lions as well) was amazed by Edwards' strength. He said Edwards even though 20kg lighter than most of them could squat more than the whole squad, and run faster. To see Edwards in person in his prime he looked like a marathon runner, hard to believe he could lift those weights.

 I did not know that. That's pretty amazing. I'm guessing because his training would be so plyometrically based that his muscles were very maximal explosive power oriented?

The deal lift http://www.metacafe.com/watch/44282/ronnie_coleman_lift/ is class.

Re the body to lift ratio. I've seen Stringer in city west gym (thats where the irish team stay) benching 110kg before. Apparently the strongest player in the premiership is Kolo Toure of Arsenal. He is reported to bench 120kg. This being 75kg in weight.

How do you get somebody who can lift so heavy yet still looks very slight?

I benched 140 at under 80kg bodyweight. Obviously these guys are athletes and benching alot, especially for a soccer player, wouldn't be high on the agenda but just pointing out that those weights are hardly jaw-dropping.

As for Dimas, his quads are huge. Also, there are two basic components to strength, having enough of the right kind of muscle fibre (muscle size/cross-sectional area) and having the ability to fire them right (nervous system efficiency). Dimas has done that exercise a zillion times (or thereabouts) and his body has learned the exact most efficient way to fire his muscles to best lift that weight. I.e. He needs less muscle to perform the movement because he's just so good at it.
He also has developed his muscles specifically for that movement, so he likely has alot of fast-twitch fibres and not that much sarcoplasm.

Hell if you get depressed at that never train with g'em, as having a tiny girl out lift you is in even bigger kick in the nuts;) :D

truthfully g'em is an animal in the gym, now it would be a highly cute and fluffy animal, but an animal none the less;)

Don't even get me started on her, she is quite simply amazing. I think she should donate her eggs to science so others can share her genetic makeup. Just awesome

when i say i get depressed about people lifting more than me. Its just that i look like i should be much stronger than I am. I'm 6ft and weigh just under 80kg but i cant bench my own body weight, not even once!

When i get in that frame of mind doubt eats me alive and it isn't a big leap to "Why do i bother"

Of course when i stand back and look at all the personal bests I am getting lately, I am making progress.

Rome wasn't built in a day after all

I'm the same and I am at least 20kg off benching my body weight to be honest, let alone not being able to just not bench it. :D

Yup I can bench 60kg once, so i too am 20 kg off it. I got a good bit to go but I am going in the right direction so i just need to think long term.

I find the bench is something I progress extremely slowly at. I'm slowly but surely getting better with the dumbells, pulldown, chins and dips etc, but the bench....slowly isn't the word, so sometimes I'm not so sure about the 'surely' part of it. :D

But I'm not overly bothered. I'm still getting in decent shape so the means don't matter awhole lot to me, as long as I feel I've put in the effort, I'm happy enough. :)

In the same boat here, progression is slow with the bench....

By the way, how much does the bar weigh again? 10Kgs?

the bar weighs 20kg. And my bench has by far and away been my slowest lift to come up. It's only now that I'm doing a full-body program and working the chest three times a week that I'm seeing any progress, and I'm about 3kg off benching my bodyweight. For some reason I'm actually starting to enjoy benching, so hopefully that'll keep me motivated for the future :D

And just to further annoy everyone, when I was an undergrad my training buddy used to pyramid up to a bench of 110kg for a couple of reps... and he weighed about 47kg at the time(that's bodyweight x 2.3)!

..and 'no', we didn't train legs! :D

The bestthing about benching is you can brag down the pub afterwards about how strong you are!I'm 10k off my own weigh of 85kilos..

Yeah, a proper Oly bar in most gyms will be 20kilos.

Feeling a little better about myself now, I didn't realise it was so heavy! That means I'm only about 10kg off my bodyweight instead of 20. I do 5 sets of 5 unassisted in the gym, so maybe with a spotter I'd be closer to my bodyweight than I thought. Nice one.

Possibly a silly question but when one does a press up, what percentage of body weight are you actually pressing? I'm assuming its not bodyweight, but more or less than 50%?

Not silly at all, I want to know this too. It will vary with height and weight distribution (centre of gravity). You can see this in effect when doing weighted pressups, there is a lever effect at play, closer your weight is to the fulcrum (feet) the less effect it has, a beer beelied man should find it easier than a big chested woman :D but there should be a rough enough average. It will also probably vary on arm length and if they are in front or behind your shoulders, like how is is easier to do push ups on a stairs. less force is acting directly onto your arms/chest. I was thinking you could do them to failure say 30 and then see your equivalent bench press weigth to failure at 30, but push ups work the abs too.

    Edit - found this
    http://www.the-fitness-motivator.com/The_Bullhorn-The-Bullhorn-June-2006.html
Push-ups are one of the most convenient and effective exercises that you can add to your repertoire. You can do push-ups almost anywhere and get a great chest and arm workout without weights. In the ‘push-up’ exercise you are pushing approximately 3/4 of your total body weight with each repetition. For a 150-pound person, this is equivalent to bench-pressing approximately 115 pounds
    - thats not right for me anyway, at about 78kg I can do 10 reps max of 56kg bench presses, but could do plenty more pushups and can do 12 push ups with 20kg on my back.

I think benching (something I'm very bad at also, but have been working very hard at lately) is one of those areas that needs real diversity in training. Becasue when you hit a wall, it's very hard to get over. Every three or so weeks I've started throwing in high sets with medium/high reps with a lower weight. Say 10x10x50kg to shock the muscles. every time i have done this (only twice so far) I've felt the effects the following few days, and my strength gains have increased. Also pyramids are a good variant on this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

Then bench is for most people the slowest advancement in the gym. What I do to aid progression is when i feel ive hit a wall and not advancing beyone a set amount i will alter the first set. So rather than spend 2 weeks doing your same weight i will start the first set and what i would normally do on the second. So the 1st and 2nd set are done at 2nd set weight and the 3rd at its normal. Then I also do drop sets after this. After usually 2 days of this the 3rd set becomes easier and I'm then ready to make a slight gain.

hope I explained that kinda clearly.
