Common cold...

I’ve been training (running) consistently since December. I’ve very slowly increased my mileage to about 40 miles a week. But every time I seem to improve, I seem to come down with a bad cold. I’ve caught my third cold since December.

Is this the curse of running? I take vitamin tablets (Berocca) every day & have a reasonably well balanced diet. I don’t think I’m over doing it with my training. When I feel a cold coming on, I immediately stop training. I haven’t run since Monday & have been dosing myself with Lemsips... & I still feel terrible.

So has anybody a cure for the common cold? Or at least a way to stop getting them so often?

You might try glutamine, I swear by it, I train 5-6 days a week and I honestly can’t remember the last time I had a cold, I work in an open office environment and the kids at home are always coming down with something during the winter. Loads of research and info in the benefits of glutamine for athletes on the net.

Juice two oranges and half a lemon every morning and down it before going to work/college and you'll never get a cold again.:)

    Cold Remedy:

Ingredients (enough for about 4 doses)

    2 Oranges
    1 Lemon
    2 Tablespoons fresh chopped/sliced ginger
    Honey
    Whiskey

Juice Oranges and lemon, add ginger, leave to soak

Quarter fill a mug, add 1 teaspoon of honey, sprinkle of ginger, capful or 2 of Whiskey, top up with hot water

    Result: Natural Lemsip!

I'd imagine that after long runs in winter, you're immune system is at it's lowest point, and extremely susceptible to getting a cold...

After the runs, perhaps try to get some vitamin C in

I just take echinea any time i feel a cold or anything comming on. Its mainly used to combat sore throats but it works for colds 2 (well it does for me anyway).

U can get it in most health food shops or places like that. The best to get is the concentrate wich u just dilute in some water

I am no expert but I had a similar problem about 2 years ago when I was training alot more. So heres my two cent worth....

Vitamin E and A and zinc are really important for Muscle recovery and also for keeping the immune systems ticking over. If you body hasnt got enough it will compromise your immune system and leaving u suspectible to colds etc. So considering the high volume of your training I would suggest checking the label on your vitamins. It doesnt give the breakdown of vitamins on their website but as far as i know you should be looking for a minimum of 10mg (pref 15mg (RDA) )Zinc in a vitamin supplement and 100% RDA for Vit A and E.
I changed my Multivitamins to Multibionta and took doubled my daily intake of vegtables and it sorted itself out in about a month!

I'll second PJG on glutamine. I had similar problems even just being run down. Glutamine thrown into a protein shake post workout for the last few months and no problems since
