censoring the simpsons

i was just watching the simpsons. the episode where the kids are given a tour of the post office. when they open the door to the canteen there postmen opening letters and stealing money from them. the last guy used to say "ding ding ding, bar mitzvah" and now it says "ding ding ding wedding".

has it come to the stage that we can't even mention the rituals of another religion on the tv? and why is it that its offensive to imply that people get money for bar mitzvahs but not weddings?

I have pondered this and I think the only way to solve it is to draw some cartoons about Mohammed.

Sky1 are subject to Watershed laws. You will notice they hack buffy to bits prior to the watershed.

In the Paddy's day episode of the simpsons there is a scene that is always edited out on sky. During the parade you see a shop that says "Olde Style British Chips" (or something like that) suddenly people start running from it and a bomb explodes inside. In the New York episode they've edited bits of the twin towers scene since 9/11 aswell.

and the bit where adam clayton calls the edge and larry mullen ****, same with mr. burns at the end

Well if those people who are boycotting Denmark right now get their way you never know what might be censored in the future. Apu might have to cut from the Simpsons, and Groundskeeper Willy and any other charachter based on a stereotype. Infact cartoons in general will probably be outlawed, incase we offend anyone!

Channel 4 always show the most legally uncut versions of programs available to them. I would bet money that the pixellating was performed by whomever supplied the wrestling.

sky one are awful, watch any family guy on it and compare it to the uncut one and it will be very heavily effected.

unless its another episode where they open the door to some postmen stealing money and a completely different guy says "ding ding ding bar mitzvah" i don't think i'm mistaken

The bulk of the cutting that Sky does of the Simpsons and E4 does of Friends isn't for censorship. If Sky/E4 can remove 30 seconds from the perennial high-rating shows (as these two would fall into), then they can fit in and extra ad or even two at the ad breaks, generating more money.

As people point out, if you see the Simpsons on BBC (even some of the really old ones), you'll see big chunks you've never seen before.

Watch Friends on E4, and you sometimes see blatant sections removed (the continuity gets screwed up, and the laughter soundtrack doesn't match). There are also parts of Friends "speeded up" (where nobody's talking) to shave those valuable seconds.

They also show that episode of the Simpsons where there is a riot after a soccer match between Portugal and Mexico. As far as I know Sky One wont show that episode.

Also in the episode where Homer runs for sanitation comissioner one of the U2 singers says "Pair of ****" This is shown on RTÉ but not on Sky One.

    There are more examples......

What I don't get is why Sky cut Family Guy so much when it showed it, it was always shown post-watershed anyway so there shouldn't have been a problem

As I pointed out above, the more you cut, the more ads you fit in. It's standard practice.

Fair enough, does ruin it though, the show on DVD is totally different to the syndicated version.

I was snappin one day when Sky edited one of the few great lines of the newer Simpsons. The first time i saw it (its about Lisas journalism thing), when theyre showing how everyone in town has been inspired to set up their own newspaper, Willie sets up some tractor review magazine

"Ive just come back from the Paris agriculture fair to see the new Massey 500`s*.....THEYRE SH1TE!"
    :D

When the repeat was on, i actually missed a bus to stay in an extra 5 mins and see that line.....and they cut sh1te:mad:

More than likely Sky bought the show in a censored form and have no interest in paying more money to get it uncensored. They themselves aren't responsible for cutting it.

so no tv channels edit anything, they buy them that way

    Not true.

In the Paddy's Day episode they edit out the bit when Homer is in Moe's and has a beer barrel on his head and shouts in a drunken voice,"Look at me I'm the Prime Minister of Ireland".

Now why would they edit that out? ;)

I first saw the episode when they go to Vegas in the US. Homer says,"What's Marge's birthday? Oh, I can't rememebr but Hitler's is the 23rd' or something like that. But on RTE or Sky, it's changed to Lassie's birthday. Why? :(

I know for a fact that is was never "ding ding ding.....bar mitzfah" its not up for debate in my book ,Censoring does happen however, In The episode of BoBo the teddy bear when Burns tried to wrestle the bear off maggie (and fails) a photographer pops up from behind the fence and takes a photo to which Monty responds by saying "damn you papparatzo"......Now papparatzo is blanked out!

For all the editing, i've seen all those bits at some stage. They seem to take a fairly hit and miss attitude to it. The U2 "****" comment i've seen about four times on tv (its larry as I remember).

Paparatzo is fairly innocuous - why did they edit that?

Incidentally, the star trek episode with a unified ireland was definitely on sky, uncut, twice.

Most of the edited programming that we see is edited by US TV stations. They syndicate it in two forms, one uncut and one cut. It all depends on what gets purchased over here. Alternatively the people producing the programs can choose to produce one TV safe edition and hold back additional footage for DVD.

To my knowledge a station would have to receive specific permission from the production company (or copyright holder) if they wanted to alter a program or film before broadcast.

Do they still cut that word I wonder? I recall it being an issue at the time, but it seems pointless so many years after her death. Even more pointless I should say.

I seem to recall a quote like:
<Barney> "Hey isn't that Princess Di-?! ... Naaaw it's just a pile of old rags..."
I've certainly seen that episode in the years since she died, although I'm not sure which station aired it.

At the end of the episode where Marge's selling pretzels, Maude said :
"Perhaps you've heard of the Yakuza -- the Poison Fists of the Pacific Rim -- the Japanese mafia". Which was censored on sky one to just "Perhaps you've heard of the Yakuza".

In the Hank Scorpio episode as he's laying into the G.I.s and Homers walking away disconsolately, Hank yells "Hey Homer, you're missing out on a lot of fun!" as he uses a flamethrower on the troops. Was cut out on Sky One I think it was, presumably so American ex-pats wouldn't explode?

i "obtained" the episode last night and he said wedding. i may be prepared to admit that i'm wrong. of course that begs the question: am i going insane? i wasnt sure until the voices reassured me that im not
