    1. Light bulb
    2. Television
    3. Aeroplane
    4. Telephone
    5. Computer

    I think I can live a while without 2 - 5.
But no light bulb? None, just candles?

p/s : Hope this thread does not turn into my first sin in AH.

Electricity is not an invention, it's a phenomenon. I vote for the transistor-pretty much all your modern electronic devices depend on it in one form or twenty million others!

Man's greatest modern innovations? (Depends on how you define the words: "Man's," "greatest," "modern," and "innovations"?) Lacking this, what just pops to mind:
    1. algorithms
    2. emancipation of women (just started; far from complete)
    3. jazz
    4. The pill
    5. Internet
    6. nanotechnology (just started, too)

the invention of the technology to harness electricity
the internal combustin engine/steam power (well most electricity is still made with steam)

I want one of those :(

    what, a SEAT? :D

I'd define the innovations by their fields of application (which didn't themselves exist pre-'modern') - with "modern" being understood as post-1800:

    1. modern medicine/therapies
    2. electric/digital signal processing
    3. self-powered transportation
    4. controlled flight (part of 3 above, but deserving of its own-)
    5. food preservation (cans/tins/lyophilisation)

    :)

I wouldn't consider any form of weaponry as an innovatio, as for something to be innovative, that implies that its progressive!
