Do you have access to a gym with free weights? Or do you plan on purchasing your own equipment and working out at home? If the latter how much are you willing to spend on equipment.

OK for home weights I'd say you should look for regular cast iron (not vinyl or chrome) weights. Something like this
    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=30001&langId=-1&catalogId=4501&productId=253176&clickfrom=name

and with a few of these for extra weight
    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=30001&langId=-1&catalogId=4501&productId=253248&clickfrom=name

With the above you'd get around 150 kg of weights within your budget. Unless you're already a big guy, that should keep you going for a couple of years. You won't be able to do bench pressing with that equipment but you'll be able to do lots of other good exercises eg military presses, deadlifts, various rows, olympic lifts etc. If you have somewhere that you can do chin ups (with added weight after a while) that you'd be able to add more exercises.

i'm going to be getting started on this soon.i'm concerned about my back .is it
easy for a beginner to maintain correct form/stance with weights or would a gym 2 nights a week be a safer bet.i'd prefer to do it at home and would have no problem with the motivation side of things
